An Artist’s Journey Through Coastal Jazz

Dominic Conway’s journey with live jazz began as it does for many kids growing up in Vancouver – as a child attending the International Jazz Festival with his parents. Over the years, he immersed himself in the festival’s free shows and even became a volunteer. These volunteer experiences allowed him to access shows that would shape his musical path.  A memory that stands out to him is his time spent with Eduardo, Coastal Jazz’s Director of Operations. They were riding around in five-ton trucks delivering music stands to Gastown.

As Dominic evolved into a jazz musician himself, he realized the breadth and depth of Coastal Jazz’s contribution to jazz. It wasn’t only showcasing one style of jazz; it was bringing together all kinds! It celebrated traditional, mainstream styles of jazz with as much regard as the freeform, improvisational, and even rock-leaning elements. This inclusivity, championed by Coastal’s programmers like Cole, Rainbow, and co-founder Ken Pickering, helped Vancouver’s jazz scene earn global recognition and acclaim.

Dominic’s journey with Coastal Jazz didn’t end with volunteering. It continued as he took to the festival’s stage with various groups such as the Mary Ancheta Quartet, Malleus Trio, and We Just Stole a Car. He became a returning artist many times, and we were happy to support his journey as an artist.

We provided Dominic with an opportunity to explore his love for jazz as a child, created unforgettable experiences as a volunteer, and offered a platform for him to showcase his talent as a young artist. Today, he stands as a celebrated tenor saxophonist, and represents the talent of Vancouver’s jazz scene on international stages.

By being a part of our community, you’re nurturing the dreams of artists, ensuring the future of jazz, and the continued exploration of jazz. If you haven’t had a chance to make your end-of-year donation, now is the perfect time. We count on dedicated music lovers like you, people who understand the power that music has in building community. Can we count on you to give $20, $40, or even $50 today?

Your support will help us kick off 2024 on a high note and continue our mission of fostering community, inclusivity, and artistic excellence in Vancouver.
