The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts is home to this exciting music series. Hosted by the inimitable Cory Weeds of Coastal Jazz, the Jazz Jam features a stellar line-up of local jazz musicians in an improvised evening of music. The jam sessions are open to musicians of all ages and abilities and offer a fun, informal and free opportunity to get your groove on with the best of the local jazz scene.

Black Hen Roadshow III

Blueshore/Capilano Theatre, 2055 Purcell Way, North Vancouver

The Black Hen Roadshow is back—and better than ever—in its third, powerhouse incarnation. Alt-country wonder Leeroy Stagger, blues juggernaut Steve Marriner (of MoneyJunk), the beguiling Ndidi Onokwulu (touted as a bringer of “seriously heady stuff” by Exclaim! Magazine) and the upright bassist Jeremy Holmes join the Nashville-based (by way of Vancouver) guitar-slinging singer-songwriter Steve Dawson on a one-time, one-month tour. The powerhouse collaboration promises to be one of the finest touring showcases of contemporary roots music in the country.

His music honours his monumental influences – the late greats Philly Joe Jones, Art Blakey, and Billy Higgins – with bold articulation and constantly innovative sense of swing are results of his life-long musical experience. Don’t miss this powerhouse quintet at Frankie’s Jazz Club with an all-star lineup: Eric Reed piano, Gerald Cannon bass, Ralph Moore tenor sax, and Jeremy Pelt trumpet.

Featuring Peggy Lee – cello, Lisa Cay Miller – piano, Colin Edward Cowan – bass, Kenton Loewen – drums, Lee Hutzulak – electronics, JP Carter – trumpet/FX, Giorgio Magnanensi – electronics/piano, and Cole Schmidt – guitar.

Southern California-based jazz pianist Danny Green has earned recognition as a bandleader and as a composer with a gift for spinning supple, absorbing narratives. Green’s growing portfolio of vibrant sounds – a mix of jazz, classical, and Brazilian rhythms – has captured the attention of critics around the world, including DownBeat MagazineSan Diego Union Tribune, and The Boston Globe. With bassist Justin Grinnell and drummer Julien Cantelm, noteworthy musicians in their own right. Together they have developed a nearly psychic connection as they perform Green’s original tunes and jazz standards.
