Buddy Guy is one of the most electrifying artists in contemporary blues and at age 82, he shows no signs of slowing down. A pioneer of Chicago’s West Side sound of the Fifties and Sixties, he is a major influence on musical giants. He’s won eight Grammy Awards and the Billboard Magazine Century Award for distinguished artistic achievement. Rolling Stone ranked him in the top 25 of its 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time and he’s a Kennedy Centre honouree. Buddy recently appeared on David Letterman’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, and it’s true – he doesn’t.

Vancouver World Music Festival Launch: Itamar Erez & Hamin Honari

An uncommon conversation between guitar and percussion, composition and improvisation. Originally from Iran and Israel, These two internationally touring musicians met in Vancouver and are excited to bring together the traditional sounds of the Middle East with their own original music.

They are currently touring across Canada. With Igor Willcox on drums, Wagner Barbosa on sax, Vini Morales on piano, and Glecio Nascimento on bass.

Moving jazz forward has been David Weiss’s modus operandi ever since he appeared on the scene in the late eighties when he established himself in New York by touring and/or recording with the likes of Freddie Hubbard, Charles Tolliver, Billy Harper, Bobby Hutcherson, Slide Hampton, James Moody, Tom Harrell, Louis Hayes, Muhal Richard Abrams, and Billy Hart, among many others. Weiss formed the Sextet to explore new compositional concepts and styles he was developing that did not fit the sound of the octet. With Myron Walden alto sax, Marcus Strickland tenor sax, David Bryant piano, Eric Wheeler bass, and E.J. Strickland drums.

Pantayo + Gamelan Bike Bike

Pantayo is an all-women lo-fi R&B gong punk collective based in Toronto. The group combines percussive metallophones and drums from kulintang traditions of the Southern Philippines and synth-based electro grooves, to create a sound shaped by their experiences as Diasporic Filipinas. Vancouver-based ensemble Gamelan Bike Bike draws its musical inspiration from Bali, Indonesia and its raw materials from the scrap metal bins of Vancouver.
