Sweden’s Fire! have been unabashedly colouring outside the lines of free jazz, psych rock, and noise for over a decade. Featuring members of The Thing and Wildbirds and Peacedrums, they’ve collaborated with Jim O’Rourke and Sunn O)))’s Oren Ambarchi, and in 2013 went massive by cherry-picking 28 Scandinavian improvisators and avant-garde rock players to form Fire! Orchestra. But it’s the trio format that brings their uncompromising mix of heavy, dark, and intensely burning music starkly into focus. Saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, bassist Johan Berthling, and drummer Andreas Werlin “offer a pulse-quickening sonic shock to the system” (Rolling Stone).
