One of the giants of jazz piano, Bill Evans was part of the Miles Davis sextet that recorded Kind of Blue in 1959, the best-selling jazz album of all time. With Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian he recorded the seminal Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debbie, and formed an equally successful partnership with bassist Chuck Israels. But Evans’ beautiful compositions and performances belied a troubled life. Eight years in the making, Bruce Spiegel’s documentary is the definitive portrait of Bill Evans.
