The Gig List: March 26

Welcome to our new blog series, The Gig List, in which each week we’ll highlight the diversity of concerts happening in-and-around Vancouver. We’ll remind you to get out and see some of Vancouver’s top notch artists as well as letting you know about touring international groups who are performing in the city, and we’ll also spotlight new and established venues to check out.

Jazz Evensong:
Miles Black Trio plays Oscar Peterson’s Easter Suite

Wednesday, March 28, 8pm
Brentwood Presb. Church, 1600 Delta Ave, Burnaby

Miles Black (piano), Darren Radtke (bass), and Dave Robbins (drums) come together for a very special Jazz Evensong at Brentwood leading into Easter weekend. Oscar Peterson’s “Easter Suite” was commissioned by the BBC and this sacred composition was only issued on DVD.

Cap Jazz Series:
Ineke Vandoorn & Marc van Vugt with A Band & Nitecap

Thursday, March 29, 8pm
Blueshore/Capilano Theatre, 2055 Purcell Way, North Vancouver

Dutch Grammy winners jazz singer Ineke Vandoorn and guitarist Marc van Vugt are artist-in-residence performing with student groups A Band and Nitecap. Ineke is an adventurous, striking singer known for her intense, operatic range and extreme precision, a winner of the prestigious Edison Jazz Award. Marc is a composer and guitarist renowned for his enchanting arrangements and spellbinding improvisations.

Spike Wilner Quartet

Friday & Saturday, March 30/31, 8pm
Frankie’s Jazz Club, 755 Beatty Street, Vancouver

Not only is Spike Wilner one of the most in-demand interpreters of piano jazz, he also runs two very busy Greenwich Village jazz clubs. Hailing from a long line of artists and spiritual mystics, Spike’s sense of artistic purpose and transformative voice give his playing particular meaning. His extensive performance and recording career attest to a wide-ranging list of collaborators among New York icons. With Tyler Mitchell bass and Anthony Pincotti drums, and special guest trumpeter Joe Magnarelli.

Gamelan Gita Asmara plus friends

Vancouver’s acclaimed Balinese-music ensemble Gamelan Gita Asmara perform with openers Mi’Ens and The Watermill Project, stay for an after party with an Afrobeat set by DJ How-To.
