Now in its 15th year, the TD High School Jazz Intensive provides high school students in Metro Vancouver with a unique opportunity to be a part of a free nine-day music residency. This year we welcome back composer and guest conductor Tomeka Reid (pictured below) from Chicago, IL, to lead the program with, from Italy, assistant director Silvia Bolognesi.
This year they are working on tunes by Marty Ehlrich, Geri Allen, Randy Weston, Mary Lou Williams, Bill Lowe, and Jim Hobbs.
Tomeka Reid, an incredible bandleader and musician in her own right, will be performing with the following bands during the festival:
MORE ABOUT THE INTENSIVE
This spring, 19 talented teens were selected from an extensive audition process open to students in Grades 10-12 from 150 schools across the Lower Mainland. Successful participants:
- Get to feel what it’s like to be in a professional Big Band,
- Receive TD Scholarships for continued music studies,
- Compete for the TD Original Composition Contest and the prestigious Dal Richards Scholarship Fund,
- Get complimentary tickets to festival shows and attend workshops with visiting international artists,
- Perform on the main stage at David Lam Park!
A big thanks to Michael Coury who led the band’s pre-rehearsal and to VCC for hosting us! We’d also like to thank Bob Rebagliati, HSJI co-founder for his continued support and dedication.

SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTATIONS–DAL RICHARDS & TD AWARDS
Coastal Jazz and Blues Society is pleased to award for the 13th consecutive year a $2,000 scholarship sponsored by the late legendary bandleader Dal Richards from the Dal Richards Foundation, held at Vancouver Foundation. The scholarship is awarded to a talented student in the High School Jazz Intensive who is continuing with post-secondary music studies.
TD High School Jazz Intensive band members will also receive generous awards from our program sponsor, TD Bank. These talented teens are worthy of investment and we are so glad to be able to nurture their growth–both as artists and individuals.
There was an exciting number of creative compositions submitted this year. Among them, Ilhan Saferali’s piece, Euphoria was chosen. As part of this program, the young composer chosen has the opportunity to work with Vancouver composer, Dean Thiessen to develop an arrangement for the HSJI band to perform at the Main Stage at David Lam Park for their final performance.
Tegan Ceshi-Smith is the Education and Outreach coordinator at Coastal Jazz.
