It’s a great week for the blues here in Van City. But of course, if that’s not your cup of whiskey, there are lots of other great shows to see. Here’s some suggestions.

This long-running jam brings out the finest in straight-ahead jazz players. Led by elegant pianist/composer/arranger Sharon Minemoto, this casual, fun spot on Hastings street hosts this jam weekly.

Hard-groovin’, dynamic and soulful–Alita Dupray leads this blues and soul-influenced band at Gastown’s funky Guilt & Co. If the weather keeps it up, even the walls will sweat!

Bruno Hubert & Malleus Trio

Astonishing jazz pianist Bruno Hubert will play a solo set before Malleus Trio takes the stage. High energy originals, choice standards, deep groove, and expansive free improv from three of Vancouver’s most in-demand, cutting-edge young talents.

An exciting blend of progressive jazz and Afro-Caribbean rhythms, Zapato Negro’s eclectic repertoire includes original compositions, underplayed jazz standards in clave, and reworking of classic Latin music reharmonized in jazz. Driving bassist and vocalist Jen Hodge has a propensity for assembling excellent musicians and leading with style and candour through her creative yet accessible tunes. Her music has a contemporary sound that is strongly rooted in tradition inspired by swinging jazz through the eras.
