John Korsrud Latin Band

Trumpet player/composer/band leader John Korsrud (Goma Dura/Hard Rubber) plays high-energy, high-groove music from Cuba and South America.

Sawdust Collector Series: Chiquita Magic // Kai Basanta // Barbara Adler

Chiquita Magic is Isis Giraldo’s choral-synthpop music. Isis is interested in the cross pollination of seemingly contrasting styles (cumbia, salsa, choral music, hip-hop, jazz) with futuristic electronic textures to create new sounding and explorative songs. Kai Basanta is a Vancouver based drummer/producer. Kai blends ethereal soundscapes with off-kilter beats in his new solo project. Barbara Adler is an interdisciplinary artist whose work brings together literary performance, composition, live event production and arts education to explore the intersections between text, music, sound and theatre.

The VSO School Of Music Summer Jazz Workshop is in full swing this week! Join artistic director and bassist Jodi Proznick and her award-winning faculty as they celebrate music together. Special guests  include guitarist Bill Coon, pianist Miles Black, drummer Jesse Cahill, vocalists Steve Maddock, Jenn Scott and Kelly Proznick, saxophonists Steve Kaldestad and James Danderfer, and Chris Davis on trumpet.

Our friend and audience favourite Dawn Pemberton has deep musical roots that take her powerful voice from gospel and soul to jazz, funk and world music. She has become a staple of the Vancouver music scene and can often be found tearin’ it up as a vocalist, teacher, facilitator, choir director and “go to girl” for live performances and studio sessions. A passionate songwriter and performer Dawn crafts her music with a sense of adventure, quirkiness, and serious groove and shapes it into her own unique and dynamic package.
Tight, expressive and bold, Dawn will hit you where it counts, funk you up and make you say “Go ‘head!”

Bradley/McGillivray Blues Band

Led by groove, improv and raw, unadulterated emotion, the Bradley/McGillivray Blues Band blend blues, jazz, Motown, and gospel into its own hip brand of soul. Ruth’s a singer you don’t want to miss – captivating, authentic and entertaining. Her knock-you-flat vocals are nicely balanced by Sheldon’s tasteful, understated guitar, and the whole sound is rounded out by an inventive rhythm section. Expect a setlist of original tunes and signature versions of old favourites.

Vancouverite Saul Berson’s burnished tone has made him one Vancouver’s most sought-after alto saxophone players. He has performed throughout Canada, Europe, the Mid-east and South Africa releasing five CD’s in the process. Expect an evening featuring a mix of original compositions and compelling jazz standards. With Nick Peck piano, Steve Holy bass, and Bernie Arai drums.

Influenced by the likes of Stan Getz, Hank Mobley, Sonny Stitt and Dexter Gordon, UK born, Vancouver resident Ben Lockwood brings his quartet to Frankie’s Jazz Club for a night of lyrical and swinging music. Expect an evening of some well loved jazz standards, along with some of Ben’s own compositions. With Nick Peck organ, Dave Sikula guitar, and Joe Poole drums.
