“Hers is an unsettling, utterly original vision.” – Entertainment Weekly
With a voice that echoes traditional English folk song, Appalachian roots, and the more theatrical chapters of the American Songbook, along with an arresting piano style that traverses chamber music, avant-jazz, and nuanced pop, Robin Holcomb’s songs “mirror a beguiling, bewildering world” (Rolling Stone). A long-time collaborator of fellow unclassifiables Wayne Horvitz and Peggy Lee, Holcomb was an active part of the NYC downtown scene before relocating to Seattle, and has worked with the likes of John Zorn, Arto Lindsay, Sonic Youth’s Lee Renaldo, Butch Morris, and many more. Emotive, expansive, and lyrical, her two-volume set of recordings for solo piano and voice, One Way or Another, was released in late-2022 by Westerlies Records. Called “staggeringly beautiful” by The New York Times, the great Bill Frisell’s praise of the singular collection of songs is even more urgent: “Listen closely. We need this.”
The 8EAST social space for new culture is a project of the NOW Society and is located in Vancouver, in Chinatown and the DTES. All events at 8EAST are by donation. The suggested donation for this event is $25 and no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
