Josh Zubot Octet
Josh Zubot’s adventurous talent alights on jazz, classical, folk, and the avant-garde’s farthest fields. A veteran of Montréal’s vibrant music scene (Patrick Watson, Land of Kush), the boundary-pushing violinist/composer found an ideal home in the genre-defying West Coast improv community, and since 2017 has worked with Tony Wilson, SICK BOSS, and Dálava, as well as international artists like Darius Jones, Matana Roberts, and Gerald Cleaver. Rhythm Changes called his recent Strings release “one of the most active and energetic albums without drums that you’ll ever hear.”
Josh’s recent focus has been on purely acoustic string music. This new ensemble adds a more electronic, amplified approach and a wider orchestral palette for his soaring angular melody lines and deep rhythmic pulses, while the cast of wildly-talented wild-card soloists find expressive colours in the polyphony and meditative calm amidst thrilling chaos.
Not only a premiere of brand-new music for his largest group to date, this show also marks the first performance for three Zubots! Together, as Josh is joined by his acclaimed brother Jesse as well as his son Klee.
Featuring: Josh Zubot violin, Jesse Zubot violin, Klee Zubot guitar, Peggy Lee cello, James Meger acoustic/electric bass, Francois Houle clarinet, Gordy Li tenor saxophone, and Dan Gaucher drums.
