BONNIE NORTHGRAVES

Bonnie is a trumpeter, vocalist, pianist, and composer based in Vancouver, CA. Her singing is smokey and rich, and her trumpet playing a call to the early jazz styles of New Orleans. A powerful combination that delights audiences at home and abroad.
Joining her are Wynston Minckler  on bass, Jens Christiansen on tenor saxophone, and Dean Thiessen on piano

For these shows, one of the hottest young working trios on the Canadian scene today meets a legendary saxophonist known for his work with Shelly Manne, Lionel Hampton, David Frishberg, and many other jazz luminaries.
With Jimi James on piano, Brad Pearson on bass, Max Huberdeau on drums and John Gross on saxophone

STEVE MADDOCK BLUES SEXTET

Vocalist Steve Maddock pays tribute to the men & women who popularized the urban blues of the early & mid 20th century – vocalists such as Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Jimmy Rushing, and Joe Williams. With Brad Turner on trumpet, Cory Weeds on tenor sax, Chris Gestrin  on piano, Andre Lachance  on bass and Dave Robbins on drums

JODI PROZNICK QUARTET

Multi-award-winning bassist, composer and educator Jodi Proznick has received many awards including the 2019 Western Canadian Music Award for Jazz Artist of the Year, National Jazz Award for Bassist, Album and Acoustic Group of the Year, and two JUNO nominations for her CDs Foundations and Sun Songs. Her chord-less quartet for the evening features fellow members of the newly established Sister Jazz Orchestra (www.sisterjazzorchestra.com), Ingrid Stitt on alto saxophone and Heather Anderson on trumpet as well as stellar NYC/Calgary based drummer Sanah Kadoura from The Ostara Project. They will be performing music from her two Juno nominated albums as well as repertoire from jazz composers such as Joe Henderson, Sonny Rollins, Horace Silver, Gerry Mulligan/Chet Baker and Duke Ellington.

STEVE KALDESTAD QUARTET: CD Release

Saxophonist Steve Kaldestad returns with his quartet to celebrate the release of Live @ Frankie’s recorded last summer! Featuring the amazingly talented Chris Gestrin on piano, Conrad Good on bass, and Steve’s long time collaborator on drums – Jesse Cahill. The quartet will be playing standards and originals in the jazz tradition.

THE ARDESHIR QUINTET

Saxophonist Ardeshir Pourkeramati is one of Vancouver’s most active young musicians. Rooted in the jazz tradition, he draws inspiration from a variety of musical influences. Joining him are his great friends and collaborators, Winston Matsushita on piano, Alvin Brendan on guitar, Wynston Minckler on bass and Graham Villette on drums

MAYA RAE

Maya Rae has been singing professionally since the age of twelve. Her sound is influenced by jazz, soul and folk music. She has released two albums (“Sapphire Birds” & “Can You See Me?”), sung with some of the biggest names in Canadian jazz and been nominated for two CFMA’s. Maya currently attends the prestigious Berklee College of Music, where she is honing her skills as a gifted artist, songwriter and performer. In addition to her solo career, she is one half of the duo “maya & ben”, and one third of the newly formed trio “Tiny Habits”.

JOHN LEE TRIO with guest CARL ALLEN – CD RELEASE

One of the Westcoast’s most impressive talents, multi-instrumentalist John Lee is joined by pianist Miles Black and renowned drummer Carl Allen to celebrate the release of his debut recording, The Artist on Cellar Music
It’s not unheard of to hear/see John Lee playing drums, piano, guitar and bass in the same week, sometimes even on the same gig! On this particular evening, he will be leading a trio from the bass chair to celebrate the release of his brand new recording The Artist on Cellar Music. Joining Lee will be pianist Miles Black and legendary drummer Carl Allen.
With over 200 recordings to his credit, the gifted Milwaukee-born, New York-based drummer, sideman, bandleader, entrepreneur, and educator, Carl Allen’s profound and propulsive percolations have provided soulful and syncopated support for Freddie Hubbard, Jackie McLean, Benny Green and more!

MILI HONG TRIO

Mili is one the most exciting drummers in the country right now, and this will be her first Frankies date as a leader. Bassist Eli Davidovici’s playing is in demand both in Montreal & Vancouver, and Mike Bjella is a Michigan-based saxophonist making his Frankie’s debut.

July 2, $20, 8:00 – 10:00

TIA BRAZDA

Vocalist Tia Brazda’s speakeasy style and original songwriting pay homage to the golden era while remaining daringly modern. Since her debut, Cabin Fever, she has played the Montreux Jazz Festival, and her album Bandshell was named one of the best of the past decade by Rai Radio in Italy. A new album of jazz standards is out this spring, titled “When I Get Low”. With Ben Frost – trumpet, Chris Fraser – guitar, Sharon Minemoto – piano, Evan Bates – bass and Kristian Braathen – drums

MIKE ALLEN TRIO feat. CARL ALLEN

Jazz Journal International calls Canadian tenor saxophonist, Mike Allen, “an accomplished musician who has studied Coltrane in-depth and forged a style that is fresh and vital”. Allen is a disciple and former student of Joe Henderson and his saxophone trio work has been acknowledged by Coda Magazine as “a substantial contribution to the genre”. Vancouver jazz fans will experience the magic first-hand as Mike Allen teams up with hard-swinging bassist, John Lee, and world-renowned drummer, Carl Allen. Carl is the William D. and Mary Grant/Missouri Endowed Professor of Jazz Studies at the UMKC Conservatory in Kansas City, MO. John Lee is a B.C.-based virtuoso, multi-instrumentalist who plays bass with a joyful swing reminiscent of Ray Brown.
