SUMMARY:New Improvisers Studio
DESCRIPTION:The New Improvisers Studio is a week-long educational initiative for 10 young musicians aged 17 to 24 that supports collective explorations in musical improvisation through the mentorship of a world-leading improviser and invited guests from the Vancouver International Jazz Festival. SUMMARY:Eve Risser Artist Talk (Moderated by Dylan van der Schyff)
DESCRIPTION:Eve Risser is among the most prominent creators on the European scene\, and her solo prepared piano album Après un Rêve (on Clean Feed Records) is almost Zen in its organic\, dreamlike developments. “There’s a sense of open-ended experimentalism to her approach. Like setting a Rube Goldberg machine in motion\, if half the machine was unassembled at start\, and the project consisted of Risser assembling the rest in front of our eyes” (Free Jazz Collective). \nModerated by Dylan van der Schyff. \nIn association with Western Front.

SUMMARY:Second Show: Immanuel Wilkins & Lutosławski Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Immanuel Wilkins “embodies contemporary jazz at its most thrilling.” – MOJO \nThe music of saxophonist/composer Immanuel Wilkins is filled with empathy and conviction\, bonding arcs of melody and lamentation to pluming gestures of space and breath. Listeners were introduced to this riveting sound on Wilkins’ acclaimed debut Omega\, which was named the #1 Jazz Album of 2020 by The New York Times. On his stunning sophomore album The 7th Hand\, the Brooklyn-based\, Philadelphia-raised artist’s “ocean-deep jazz epics” (Pitchfork) explored relationships between presence and nothingness across an hour-long suite. \n\nThis Festival performance marks the Canadian premiere of a new Immanuel Wilkins piece written for the Lutosławski Quartet and commissioned by Jazztopad Festival / National Forum of Music in Wroclaw\, Poland. An ensemble of versatile and open-minded artists\, Roksana Kwaśnikowska violin\, Marcin Markowicz violin\, Artur Rozmysłowicz viola\, and Maciej Młodawski cello blend contemporary repertoire with gems from classical\, Romantic\, and jazz music. Founded in 2007\, the Lutosławski Quartet is one of Europe’s foremost contemporary classical string quartets\, specializing in the music of their namesake\, Witold Lutosławski\, as well as works by Bacewicz\, Szymanowski\, and the group’s own Marcin Markowicz. \nAbout the Piece: Ethnic Cleansing — An American Tradition \nThis piece is dedicated to the people of Palestine who have faced a systematic forced displacement from their homeland\, as well as the recent flood of deportations performed by the US Government. It explores the idea that Sandi Hilal speaks of in her essay “Permanent Temporariness”\, called “al masha”\, referring to group land cultivation in order to prevent their land being illegally seized by settlers. This piece is about constantly living on the edge of life and death. \nAdditional support is provided by the Polish Cultural Institute New York\, National Forum of Music – Poland\, and the Western Front. \nDiscounted tickets are available for students\, artists and those who are unable to afford full price. Select “Discount Pricing” tickets at checkout. \nThis venue does not have an elevator. For accessibility information and seating please contact: boxoffice@coastaljazz.ca

SUMMARY:Sakina Abdou Artist Talk\, moderated by Dylan van der Schyff
DESCRIPTION:Based in Lille\, France\, saxophonist/flutist Sakina Abdou explores free improvisation and broadly experimental contemporary music with the likes of Eve Risser’s Red Desert Orchestra\, Raymond Boni\, Satoko Fujii\, Dedalus\, and the daring experimental collective\, Muzzix. Of Franco-Nigerian origin\, an upcoming collaboration will feature drummers from Niger and flutist Yacouba Moumouni\, under the auspices of CNCM Athénor. Her multifaceted sound is sometimes caustic\, sometimes full of grace and quietude\, and always full of suspense and surprise\, as evidenced on Goodbye Ground\, her debut album for the cutting edge New York label Relative Pitch Records. “She can be as fiery as she is fierce\, but what has impressed me is Abdou’s ability to bring moments of swing-derived blowing to the equation\, evoking Lee Konitz as much as Peter Brötzmann” (The Quietus). \nModerated by scholar and percussionist Dylan van der Schyff. A leading figure in the Vancouver improv and creative music scene for decades\, he’s contributed to almost 200 records\, and performed extensively with Peggy Lee\, George Lewis\, John Butcher\, Dave Douglas\, Misha Mengelberg\, Rob Mazurek\, Evan Parker\, and many others. He is now Professor (Associate) in Music at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music\, where his research focuses on developing possibilities for thought and action in practical areas such as improvisation and creativity\, performance\, and music education. \nIn association with Western Front\, with the support of the Consulate General of France in Vancouver.

DESCRIPTION:Hand to Earth has quickly developed an international reputation as one of Australia’s most distinctive contemporary music ensembles\, and this workshop/discussion will feature three of its members. Daniel and David Wilfred are keepers of Yolngu Manikay\, indigenous songs from North East Arnhem Land that can be traced back more than 40\,000 years\, making them the world’s oldest continuously practised music tradition. Daniel sings of the stars\, of fire\, and of the cooling rain\, while the drone of David Wilfred’s didgeridoo and atmospheres created by trumpeter/sound artist Peter Knight make for a bold sound that Jazzwise called “testing at times\, mesmerizing at others\, but always extraordinarily intriguing in its organic synthesis of the ancient and contemporary.” \nModerated by musician\, composer and educator Meredith Bates. A JUNO Award winner with Pugs & Crows\, and a nominee for her recent solo album\, Tesseract\, she co-leads Gentle Party and Sound Migrations and founded instrumental sextet Like the Mind\, with renowned improvisors from Canada and Sweden. She’s artistic director of the Vancouver Improvised Arts Society. \nPresented in collaboration with Jazztopad Festival (National Forum of Music)\, Wroclaw\, Poland

SUMMARY:Shahzad Ismaily Artist Talk (moderated by Julia Úlehla)
DESCRIPTION:Shahzad Ismaily is a Brooklyn-based musician\, composer\, engineer\, and founder of Figure 8 Recording. The New York Times called him “one of music’s most in-demand collaborators\, flitting like a mischievous butterfly through genres as diverse as honeyed folk\, rambunctious free jazz and spectral meditations sung in Urdu”. Over the last thirty years he’s played electric bass\, drums\, percussion\, guitar\, synths and all manner of instruments procured in life’s travels. He’s done work for dance and theatre\, and recorded and performed with a diverse crew of artmakers\, including Yoko Ono\, Laurie Anderson\, Lou Reed\, Laura Veirs\, Bonnie “Prince” Billy\, Marianne Faithfull\, Faun Fables\, Feist\, Bryce Dessner\, Keiji Haino\, Ceramic Dog\, Secret Chiefs 3\, Sam Amidon\, Arooj Aftab\, Vijay Iyer and more. \nModerated by scholar\, composer and vocalist Julia Úlehla\, known for her stunning synthesis of ethnomusicology and incandescent modern composition in the long-running Dálava. That ensemble\, performing June 29 at Revue Stage\, explores the nexus of ritual and performance\, evoking the liminal intensity of layered temporalities and ancestral presences. \nIn association with Western Front.

SUMMARY:George Crotty
DESCRIPTION:Canadian cellist/composer George Crotty’s inquisitive eclecticism embraces fiddle-derived ornamentation\, the agile one-finger gestures of Indian classical music\, adapted electric guitar techniques\, and the bold articulations of jazz bass. One half of the Loose Roots Duo with West Coast fiddler Gabriel Dubreuil\, and leader of his titular world-jazz inflected Trio\, the Toronto-based Crotty’s modernist genre-bending is heavily influenced by his hometown’s vibrant pluralism.

SUMMARY:Sean Cronin
DESCRIPTION:Sean Cronin\, like many\, has not performed his music in over a year. The last time he did\, it was in New York\, releasing his band Very Good’s ambitious LP Adulthood. Typical of Cronin’s work\, the show was an absurdist avant-Americana dream\, equal parts Leonard Cohen\, Charles Mingus\, Pixies\, and Eugene Ionesco. He returns to Vancouver for a solo show that will see him performing his oddly melodious originals as well as improvising dialogue\, playing percussion with his feet\, and perhaps ending up in an apron and bunny ears.

SUMMARY:Improvising Forward: Persevere\, Repair\, Sustain
DESCRIPTION:Recent weeks have witnessed changes and upheavals in people’s lives around the globe\, as we face the impacts of a global pandemic and of a widespread crisis in social and racial justice. As we begin to learn how to confront our shared distances and to discover hopeful ways of coming together\, the improvising arts\, particularly music\, offer significant opportunities to confront\, to explore and to understand some of these vital changes. \n1:30-2:30pm: Anna Webber & Angela Morris \n3:00-4:00pm: Gerald Cleaver \nThe International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation\, at the University of British Columbia\, presents this on-line colloquium in collaboration with Coastal Jazz and Western Front to offer musicians and artists an opportunity to engage with these issues in their own creative practices. How does music help us potentially to persevere in the face of crisis? In what ways does improvisation offer sustained hope or sustaining vitality? Does music of the moment\, in the present tense\, address the possibility of reparation\, or of repairing our challenging relationships with each other and with the world? How might the improvising arts encourage communities to move forward? \nAudiences around the planet are warmly invited to listen to the talks\, and to participate in on-line discussion with each of the presenters. The colloquium strives to uplift\, elevate and support the work of significant improvising artists from around the world.
