Dramatic\, spontaneous creation and razor-sharp precision come together on stage with Romain’s longtime collaborators Nikko Whitworth bass\, John Nicholson tenor and soprano saxophones\, and Feven Kidane trumpet. Through dense polyrhythms and snaking melodies\, they explore Romain’s hyperfixations on the neuroscience of emotion\, circadian biology\, coffee extraction theory\, cool animals\, and anti-colonial resistance. The Salience Network’s debut album\, recorded to tape at Vancouver’s Afterlife Studios and released in November 2023 on the Infidels Jazz label\, is a somber document punctuated by moments of humour and hope. \nBrodie West Quintet \nToronto-based saxophonist/composer Brodie West is a tireless creative force—both within jazz spheres and well beyond them. He’s one of those rare artists whose practice encompasses tremendous breadth but whose singular\, eccentric voice is irrepressible. West’s quintet features two drummers – Nick Fraser and Evan Cartwright – along with pianist Tania Gill and Josh Cole on bass. The group plays West’s rhythmically charged compositions\, presenting an intricate rhythmic matrix at times meditative\, buoyant and wrapped with lyrical melodicism and virtuosic improvisation. \nThis is a 19+ event. \nPresented in collaboration with the Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival. \nFor 21 years\, the Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival has been grounded in the Downtown Eastside and focused on listening and learning from the community’s cultural practices. Asrar (Farsi for mystery) is precisely what is unveiled by this ensemble’s entrancing interplay. \nJessica Ackerley Trio \nJessica Ackerley is a Canadian guitarist/improviser/composer currently on tour promoting their latest release\, All Of the Colors Are Singing\, out on AKP Recordings. Their music is a hybrid musical language drawing on the influences of Black American Music and avant-garde improvisers\, as well as the culture of the thriving New York City rock and noise scenes. SUMMARY:IronFest IV: Craig Taborn
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn-based Craig Taborn has been performing piano and electronic music in the jazz\, improvisational\, and creative music scene for over twenty five years. He has experience composing for and performing in a wide variety of situations including jazz\, new music\, electronic\, rock\, noise and avant garde contexts. The New York Times Magazine calls Taborn “One of the best jazz pianists alive.” \nCraig Taborn’s 2021 live album Avenging Angel was widely praised for the fresh ideas it brought to the solo piano idiom. The Guardian saluted Craig’s “genius (there is no other word for it)” and his “world of whispered\, wide-spaced figures\, ringing overtones\, evaporating echoes and glowering contrapuntal cascades.” Over the last decade Taborn has continued to refine and develop his approach\, reaching new high ground with Shadow Plays\, a stunning live recital from Vienna’s Konzerthaus. In this fully improvised concert\, recorded in March 2020\, Craig explores sounds and silences\, swirling colours\, densities and forms\, creating new music in the moment with both poetic imagination and an iron grip on his spontaneously generated material. \nPresented in collaboration with Heart of the City Festival.

DESCRIPTION:Beatings Are In The Body is a powerful and enigmatic project from three of Canada’s leading figures in experimental music — Vancouver-based pianist/composer/improviser Róisin Adams (of Hildegard’s Ghost)\, Montréal-based experimental vocalist/composer Erika Angell (of Thus Owls)\, and fellow Vancouverite Peggy Lee — renowned cellist/composer/improviser. DESCRIPTION:KEN VANDERMARK AND NOT FOR PROPER \nRenowned American composer\, improviser\, and MacArthur Fellowship recipient Ken Vandermark has a “room-filling\, spectrum-cramming\, mountain-moving tonal presence” (NOW Magazine) on sax and clarinets. A modern master and ardent sound explorer\, Vandermark has worked with Peter Brötzmann\, Kris Davis\, Terrie Ex\, Paal Nilssen-Love\, Ikue Mori\, Hamid Drake\, and scores of internationally renowned creative music giants. For this concert\, the prolific Chicagoan joins local duo Not for Proper in artful\, adventurous collaboration. \nPianist Lisa Cay Miller (NOW Orchestra) and drummer Kenton Loewen (Haram) have worked in a multitude of incarnations—both together and with local and international creative communities—dating back to when 1067 and The Sugar Refinery were keeping turn-of-the-century Granville Street weird and establishing Vancouver as a globally renowned improvised music hub. Cacophonous lifers\, Not for Proper juxtaposes polyrhythmic free din\, raw cracked tone\, and wild open peace. \nALVARO ROJAS’ MUSIC FOR 22 \nMusic for 22 began as a solo composition project for Alvaro Rojas in the early stages of the global pandemic. As the days wore on\, the restlessly inventive Rojas dug deeper\, arranging the pieces for string quartet alongside his adept guitar playing. With the guitar and string section sometimes working together\, sometimes in opposition\, Music for 22 ranges from contemplative beauty to turbulent rage alongside co-conspirators Meredith Bates violin\, Josh Zubot violin\, Parmela Attariwala viola\, and Peggy Lee cello. This evening celebrates the group’s new self-titled album release\, with cameos from American vocalist/producer Georgia Anne Muldrow and members of Vancouver’s vibrant music community.

Rooted in Black American improvised music traditions\, Suin Park piano\, KeAloha drums\, and Feven Kidane bass/trumpet create a shared dialect that begins with listening and spreads outward in sonic story-shaping.
