SUMMARY:Qalandar with guest Neelamjit Dhillon
DESCRIPTION:A contemporary Persian ensemble rooted in classical tradition while embracing improvisation and new compositional approaches\, Qalandar formed out of a weekly residency in the early 2010s and solidified as a quintet in 2016. The group draws on the distinct musical lineages of its members to weave Persian and Arabic modal traditions together with contemporary composition and free improv\, and their detailed deep-listening approach has been called “mesmerizing” (Ink 19)\, “deeply penetrating” (All About Jazz)\, and “exquisite” (Musica Jazz). Built on years of shared history\, trust\, and what The WholeNote described as a “thrilling ability to make notes seem to hang in the air\,” Gordon Grdina oud\, Hamin Honari tombak\, daf\, Kenton Loewen drums\, Ali Razmi tar\, voice\, and Fathieh Honari voice\, are joined by special guest Neelamjit Dhillon tabla. \nThanks to Dr. Hari Sharma Foundation.

SUMMARY:Ben Brown & Stefan Christoff
DESCRIPTION:There’s a wild expansiveness to the sound of percussionist Ben Brown and pianist Stefan Christoff\, an unbound and inspired collaboration that invokes light\, sky\, and the endless ocean. Glimpses of stillness peer through the chaotic world\, and profound spontaneity takes magnificent shape. Sun 13 said of their 2025 debut In Duet\, that “in much the same way Chris Abrahams\, Jim White\, or Mick Turner ply their trades\, some artists just have a distinct playing style and sound\, and Christoff is one of them. Alongside Brown\, the duo conjures up something evocative here. Rich and emotive in all its twists and turns\, there’s barely a moment to catch your breath.” \nJUNO Award winner Ben Brown approaches percussion as an interdisciplinary art\, including sculptures\, extended techniques\, and\, above all\, expressiveness in his compositions. His fellow Montréaler Stefan Christoff moves between free improv\, classical\, and noise\, in large part because of his continuous collaborations with artists of no fixed genre\, including Jarrett Martineau\, Lori Goldston\, and Sam Shalabi.

SUMMARY:Improv Karaoke
DESCRIPTION:Improv Karaoke is a monthly artist-run community event where improvising musicians of all genres and experience levels drop in\, sign up\, and play in new ensembles created from a freshly-drawn pool of names. Coming from a shared love of improvised music-making\, Andrea Wong and Spencer Schoening had wistful conversations and ideas of gatherings where musicians of all types played together with minimal curation or need for rehearsals\, and in spaces that effortlessly fostered spontaneous and collaborative playing with full artistic freedom. With the enthusiasm of many musician-hosts\, Improv Karaoke currently facilitates monthly musical gatherings at 8EAST in Vancouver’s Chinatown\, and at the Brentwood Presbyterian Church in Burnaby\, totaling 20 gathering opportunities every year for music lovers and explorers alike. \nFor this Vancouver International Jazz Festival event\, Improv Karaoke comes to Granville Island\, hosted by Andrea Wong piano\, Matthew Ariaratnam guitar\, Mike Allen saxophone\, Mick Bryant guitar\, Nicholas Marriott guitarist/multi-instrumentalist\, and Spencer Schoening drums\, with Brooklyn-based guitarist and Coastal Jazz Artist in Residence Wendy Eisenberg joining as a featured guest.

SUMMARY:Amina Claudine Myers "Solace of the Mind"
DESCRIPTION:“This is a musical language distilled to its essence\, with Myers conjuring whole worlds from just a few perfectly chosen notes.” – The Wire \nSolace of the Mind is the latest release from pianist\, organist\, vocalist\, and newly minted NEA Jazz Master Amina Claudine Myers. The extraordinary recording – a follow up to her acclaimed duo with Wadada Leo Smith\, Central Park’s Mosaic of Reservoir\, Lake\, Paths and Gardens\, released via Red Hook Records in 2024 – stands as a testament to the uncompromising vision of a seasoned leader in creative music who’s traced a remarkable path from her beginnings in Arkansas church choirs to the forefront of avant-garde jazz. The album made Best of 2025 lists in the New York Times\, All About Jazz\, Bandcamp Daily\, Slate\, All Music\, and more. \nThroughout her six-decade musical journey\, Myers has consistently defied conventional boundaries while drawing from her rich roots in Baptist and Methodist church music\, gospel\, and rhythm and blues. Featuring Myers on piano\, Hammond B3 organ\, and voice\, Solace of the Mind is a deeply personal exploration of musical evolution\, and an exceptionally expressive dialogue between tradition and modernity.

SUMMARY:Spirits Rejoice: The Music of Louis Moholo-Moholo
DESCRIPTION:Returning to Vancouver after several years in Berlin\, pianist Tyson Naylor leads a ritualistic\, high voltage tribute to Louis Moholo-Moholo\, the legendary drummer\, composer\, and pillar of South African Jazz. Though primarily associated with the creative music scenes of Vancouver and Toronto\, the group’s members have strong ties to European free jazz and improv\, and approach Louis Moholo-Moholo’s music as living repertoire: porous\, political\, and joyous. With acclaimed\, Toronto-based alto saxophonist Karen Ng\, JP Carter trumpet\, Dan Gaucher drums\, and James Meger bass\, Naylor traces lines between South African liberation music\, European free jazz\, and Canada’s creative music scenes\, while favouring collective risk\, ensemble sound\, and urgent\, celebratory energy.

SUMMARY:TIME FLIES
DESCRIPTION:Coastal Jazz co-founder Ken Pickering started the TIME FLIES series back in 1988. In 2001\, German bassist Torsten Müller had moved to Vancouver and began co-curating TIME FLIES as “company-style” improvising ensembles of local and visiting artists playing in various configurations through the evening—duos\, trios\, and whatever combinations sparked interest. While Derek Bailey’s renowned company approach was about instigating intriguing conflicts\, Torsten’s focus is on assembling complementary players and cultivating connection. A “summit meeting” of improvisers\, TIME FLIES calls on acclaimed adventurers from around town and around the globe\, mixing emerging artists with veterans of the jazz\, avant-garde\, and creative improvisation communities. \n\nThe 2026 edition will feature Müller as well as Coastal Jazz Artist in Residence Patrick Shiroishi saxophone; Toronto-based saxophonist Karen Ng; Lina Nyberg\, one of Sweden’s most creative and innovative jazz vocalists; vanguard Brooklyn-based guitarist Steve Gunn; Australian accordionist Anthony Schulz\, who has performed with Barre Phillips\, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra\, and more; Aysha Dulong\, who works with acoustic and electronic instruments in a hybridized model to explore how sound can embody lived experiences; and JUNO Award-winning West Coast violinist Meredith Bates (Gentle Party).

SUMMARY:Wendy Eisenberg Viewfinder
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn-based guitarist\, vocalist\, composer\, and 2026 Coastal Jazz Artist in Residence Wendy Eisenberg’s Viewfinder is a sprawling and sublime creative response to her laser eye surgery procedure and new visual life. An elusive song cycle that encompasses free jazz\, post-rock\, beauty\, fallibility\, questioning\, seeing anew\, and the unseen\, “what’s most striking about Viewfinder is Eisenberg’s ability to crystallize their complex\, nuanced thoughts about the limits of perception without creating new dogma in the process” (Pitchfork). \nRecorded at Brooklyn’s Figure 8 with a lineup that featured rising NYC artists Tyrone Allen II\, Zekereyya el-Magharbel\, Andrew Links\, Carmen Q. Rothwell\, Booker Stardrum\, and Chris Williams\, for this special VIJF performance Eisenberg will be joined by West Coast creative lights Dan Gaucher drums and electronics\, JP Carter trumpet and electronics\, and Nebyu Yohannes trombone\, as well as former Vancouverites Sean Cronin bass and Cat Toren piano. \n“What’s notable is that Eisenberg\, who has in the past proven to be more than capable of shredding\, doesn’t necessarily step out in front of the band; their intricate\, textural guitar playing acts more as a canvas for the group to fully colour in.” – The Quietus

SUMMARY:Flowers for Tone
DESCRIPTION:Tony Wilson helped shape creative music in Vancouver and beyond since the 1980s. A longtime Hornby Islander\, Tone passed away suddenly on June 6\, just weeks ahead of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival he performed at so many times (often on his birthday\, which the Festival always coincided with). Tony led innumerable projects of his own compositions\, and lent his stratospheric imagination to the Peggy Lee Band\, Dark Blue World\, Pugs & Crows\, and his unflinching multi-disciplinary works like The Homeless Project. \nEver curious\, and always able to channel fire and find channels to the spiritual\, Tony’s far-ranging interest in composers and players from the obscure to the renowned often led him to present projects at the Festival that spotlighted and extrapolated on the works of Sonny Greenwich\, Lenny Breau\, Jim Pepper\, Pedar Long\, Frank Zappa\, Sun Ra\, and others. Tony’s improvisational genius and signature guitar playing elevated these performances beyond tribute\, and often felt like a melding of powerful cosmic forces. \nHe was an open-hearted collaborator who paid tribute to so many\, and though our hearts are hurting we’re looking forward to sharing time with many of Tony’s friends\, family\, and collaborators in the time slot that Tony was going to present “Flowers for Albert”\, a project celebrating Albert Ayler. Instead\, we’ll gather for Flowers for Tone\, celebrating Tony’s profound impact and influence on our hearts and ears\, and honouring his lasting legacy on the creative music scene. \nThe Flowers for Tone ensemble features James Meger bass\, Kenton Loewen drums\, Feven Kidane trumpet\, Ruthie Ha saxophones\, Peggy Lee cello\, Cole Schmidt guitar\, and several other guests.

SUMMARY:Patrick Shiroishi and Nick Yacyshyn with Lee Hutzulak (live visuals)
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist Patrick Shiroishi’s discography is as dizzying as it is diverse\, including solo work\, collaborative releases\, and guest appearances with Chelsea Wolfe\, Dirty Projectors\, Che Chen and claire rousay. Of the many configurations Patrick works in\, sax+drums is his favourite\, and for this VIJF show\, he’s excited to be playing with his dear friend Nick Yacyshyn in a duo setting for the first time. \nVancouver-based drummer Nick Yacyshyn is best known as part of experimental metal group SUMAC\, whose rare mixture of brutal heaviness and free jazz-inspired fluidity has included collaborations with Keiji Haino\, Caspar Brötzmann\, and Moor Mother. Although rooted in extreme music subgenres\, Nick’s dynamic approach brings a common thread of deep musicality and curiosity to each of his chosen projects. \n\nThey’ll be joined by Lee Hutzulak\, who utilizes live cameras\, misfit lenses\, a fishtank\, spray bottle\, lenticular plastic\, broken bits of mirror\, crystals\, and an assortment of light sources to create compelling\, shape-shifting projections. When not making experimental projections\, Hutzulak is a noted musician who leads Dixie’s Death Pool\, improvises in a variety of combinations\, and provided the beautiful artwork for this year’s Festival.

SUMMARY:Steve Gunn "Music for Writers”
DESCRIPTION:“Peaceful\, empathic\, atmospheric. Gunn paints aural pictures to wander through.” – The Big Takeover \nSteve Gunn is a New York-based guitarist and songwriter who has been at the vanguard of American experimental and guitar-oriented rock music for over a decade\, and close listening reveals the influence of blues\, folk\, ecstatic free jazz\, and psych in his continually unfolding output. In 2025\, Gunn released Music for Writers\, his first official solo instrumental album\, on Three Lobed Recordings. The release highlights his ongoing exploration of tone\, atmosphere\, and composition\, and as Pitchfork said\, it “aims to inspire creativity and reflection\, to ignite synapses\, to spur you along in whatever writerly endeavor you might be undertaking. It’s meant to exist somewhere between atmospheric and meditative.”

SUMMARY:Talking Pictures with Fredrik Ljungkvist
DESCRIPTION:“Treading the blurry line between new music and jazz\, Talking Pictures excels in juxtaposing sonic textures.” – Ottawa Citizen \nFormed in 1993 by guitarist/composer Ron Samworth (NOW Orchestra\, DarkBlueWorld)\, the wide-ranging sonic palette and ecstatic\, empathic interplay of Talking Pictures has had a massive influence on Vancouver’s creative music community. They’ve also played a vital role as West Coast cultural ambassadors through their extensive touring and collaborations with the likes of Robin Holcomb\, Achim Kaufmann and Wayne Horvitz. \nFeaturing Peggy Lee cello\, Bill Clark trumpet/EWI\, and Dylan van der Schyff drums/percussion alongside Samworth\, Talking Pictures will be joined by Fredrik Ljungkvist\, the innovative Swedish saxophonist/clarinettist whose “playing can be fiery and expressive\, but also fragile and poetic” (All About Jazz). A member of LSB Trio and Atomic\, Ljungkvist has worked with international heavyweights like Ken Vandermark\, Kris Davis\, Mats Gustafsson\, and many others.

SUMMARY:Immix
DESCRIPTION:With a sound world that embraces the magnetism of bodies\, the emotions of late-capitalist hearts\, and the dreams of ghosts and angels\, Immix’s songs dance between the vulnerability of the human voice and the potential of an emergent vocabulary hidden within the glitch and grain of synthesized voice.\nThe burgeoning solo project of Robyn Jacob–a composer\, performer and educator who has worked with Grammy-winning ensembles Third Coast Percussion and Sō Percussion\, Chor Leoni\, and others–Immix sees Jacob exploring voice and harmonizer alongside Olive Shakur double bass\, Nico Whitworth double bass\, Haley Bird oboe\, and Liam Hockley bass clarinet. \nThis event will also be screening the short film Dream Baby Dream.

SUMMARY:Dream Baby Dream (short film)
DESCRIPTION:Dream Baby Dream is a 20-minute experimental film produced by Jazzfest Berlin that explores the intersection of music\, collective memory\, and trauma through movement. Directed by a ten-person creative collective\, the project was filmed at iconic Berlin locations like the Gropius Bau and the former Tegel Airport with the participation of sixty community members. The film serves as a visual and poetic journey\, blending avant-garde performance with the “inner and outer landscapes” of its diverse cast. \nThis show will also feature a performance by Immix.

SUMMARY:Ches Smith's Clone Row
DESCRIPTION:Ches Smith’s June 2025 release on Otherly Love Records\, Clone Row\, debuts an adventurous new quartet featuring guitarists Mary Halvorson and Liberty Ellman\, and bassist Nick Dunston. Smith finds endless possibilities in this seemingly limited instrumentation\, weaving together varied threads from his divergent earlier projects in ways that sound not quite like any of them. \nThe four renowned composer-improvisers tangle with Ches Smith’s newest compositions. Two highly individualistic guitarists swirl\, echo and double-take\, squaring off with a bass and drums team that anchors and unhinges through doubling sounds — drum machines and acoustic drums\, low-end analog synth and acoustic bass\, digital samples and repeated fragments performed in real time. In a dance of coherence and chaos\, the four musicians plunge headlong into the feedback loop of composition and improvisation armed with chemistry created by their mutual appreciation and enduring friendships. \n“This definitely ain’t your father’s guitar band\,” writes no less an expert on six-string subversion than Marc Ribot\, who penned the album’s liner notes. “It’s as if I’m hearing a Jim Hall concert in which one of us did a lot of mushrooms\, or… some post-punk post-Dave Brubeck post-trip-hop experiment with classical form.” \nFeaturing Ches Smith drums/vibes/electronics\, Mary Halvorson guitar\, Liberty Ellman guitar\, Nick Dunston bass/electronics.

SUMMARY:Open Thread
DESCRIPTION:Open Thread—the innovative Melbourne-based ensemble of cellist Peggy Lee\, saxophonist Julien Wilson\, guitarist Theo Carbo\, and drummer/percussionist Dylan van der Schyff—weaves anthemic melodies\, diverse rhythmic structures\, and ear-awakening improvised soundscapes into an idiosyncratic collective identity. \nThe group was sparked by Peggy Lee’s move from Vancouver to Melbourne in 2023 and her desire to connect with local musicians (in addition to longtime collaborator van der Schyff). This led to a gathering of attuned talents\, and a leap into the rich\, joyful possibilities of a collective sound that’s as challenging as it is rewarding. \nWith compositions from each member alongside open-eared\, emotionally far-ranging improvisations\, the group calls equally on deep vocabularies of extended techniques and their shared\, playfully experimental love of melody and song forms. “The quartet dabbles in discordant soundscapes. But overall\, Open Thread conjures a delicate sound world\, asking that listeners put aside distractions and give themselves over to these carefully wrought melodies\, thronged with strange beauty and otherness.” – Rhythms Magazine

SUMMARY:Allie Lynn King\, Nate McBride\, and Kenton Loewen
DESCRIPTION:Anchored in improvisation\, Vancouver guitarist Allie Lynn King blends the roots of blues and jazz with the heaviness of doom metal and the abrasion of noise. Bassist Nate McBride (MESTIZX) calls Chicago home\, but his collaborations with the likes of Dennis Gonzalez\, Jeb Bishop\, and Ken Vandermark span the globe. SUMMARY:MESTIZX
DESCRIPTION:MESTIZX is an eclectic and celebratory expression of post-genre\, de-colonial latinx music. Bolivian-born singer/multi-instrumentalist Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti and Chicago expat drummer Frank Rosaly’s 2024 debut on International Anthem and Nonesuch Records is “visionary music with boundaryless imagination and creativity” (AllMusic) that steers pre-and post-colonial Latin American rhythms into a collision with avant jazz\, Chicago post-rock\, minimalism\, electronica\, and folk. \nPartners in marriage and art\, the Amsterdam-based Ferragutti and Rosaly dive into their respective Bolivian\, Brazilian\, and Puerto Rican roots to create deeply personal meditations on decolonization and the defiant power of ritual and protest. They chose the title MESTIZX — a non-gendered version of the Spanish colonial word for a “mixed person” — to both challenge and embrace the liminality of their identities and artistic practices. Ferragutti’s notable collaborators include Alabaster DePlume\, jaimie branch\, Ab Baars\, Eric Boeren\, and Mary Oliver\, while Rosaly has worked with Fennesz\, Jeff Parker\, Thurston Moore\, Nels Cline\, Colin Stetson\, and many others. \nWith Ben Boye on keys\, autoharp\, and octatrack\, James McClure on trumpet and synth\, and bassist Nate McBride\, MESTIZX’s “infectiously kinetic compositions” (The Guardian) are a movement-inducing lifeline of communal\, celebratory\, soul-baring music. \nRead their recent interview with Stir.

SUMMARY:Josh Zubot Octet
DESCRIPTION:Josh Zubot’s adventurous talent alights on jazz\, classical\, folk\, and the avant-garde’s farthest fields. A veteran of Montréal’s vibrant music scene (Patrick Watson\, Land of Kush)\, the boundary-pushing violinist/composer found an ideal home in the genre-defying West Coast improv community\, and since 2017 has worked with Tony Wilson\, SICK BOSS\, and Dálava\, as well as international artists like Darius Jones\, Matana Roberts\, and Gerald Cleaver. Rhythm Changes called his recent Strings release “one of the most active and energetic albums without drums that you’ll ever hear.” \nJosh’s recent focus has been on purely acoustic string music. This new ensemble adds a more electronic\, amplified approach and a wider orchestral palette for his soaring angular melody lines and deep rhythmic pulses\, while the cast of wildly-talented wild-card soloists find expressive colours in the polyphony and meditative calm amidst thrilling chaos. \nNot only a premiere of brand-new music for his largest group to date\, this show also marks the first performance for three Zubots! Together\, as Josh is joined by his acclaimed brother Jesse as well as his son Klee. \nFeaturing: Josh Zubot violin\, Jesse Zubot violin\, Klee Zubot guitar\, Peggy Lee cello\, James Meger acoustic/electric bass\, Francois Houle clarinet\, Gordy Li tenor saxophone\, and Dan Gaucher drums.

SUMMARY:François Houle & Gordon Grdina with Izumi Kimura & Gerry Hemingway
DESCRIPTION:You know the old saying “it takes one to know one”? In this case\, it takes two to know two\, as a pair of long standing duos connect in empathic\, searching\, and virtuosic collaboration. \nThe creative lives of basset clarinettist François Houle and guitarist/oud player Gordon Grdina have intertwined for over twenty years\, in a wide variety of projects. As HELIOTROPE\, they tap seamlessly into global traditions\, avant-jazz\, western classical music\, and free improvisation to create “an interesting form of ‘art song’\, full of melodies that are elegantly pared down and also elaborately latticed\, with the deeply haunting oud quarter tones providing both a sense of solace and gravitas” (Jazzwise). \nIrish-based Japanese pianist Izumi Kimura and US-born\, Switzerland-based drummer/vocalist/vibraphonist Gerry Hemingway began working as a duo in 2016 developing their shared language through a series of residencies and performances in Ireland (as well developing further in a trio context with bassist Barry Guy). A refined language of formal structures\, spontaneous invention\, and unique interpretations of song was presented in their 2023 debut Kairos\, “demonstrating that music can link effortlessly across time\, genres\, and any preconceptions in the hands of the right performers.” (Sammy Stein\, Platinum Mind) This tour is coordinated with the release of their second album\, How the Dust Falls released on Auricle Records. \nDon’t miss two of creative music’s most alchemical duos combining for sublime and unrepeatable sonic shaping. \nMORE: Izumi Kimura and Gerry Hemingway will also participate in TIME FLIES: Night One\, June 26th at Revue Stage. \nThis performance made possible in part due to support from the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia and Culture Ireland. \n

SUMMARY:Forever Stories of: Moving Parties
DESCRIPTION:Cellist Peggy Lee and guitarist Cole Schmidt are composers compelled to write for improvising musicians; that is\, they conceive inspiring frameworks to bring out essential\, novel contributions from some of creative music’s most vital voices. \nTheir latest album\, Forever Stories of: Moving Parties\, features an array of international guests\, including Erika Angell\, Wayne Horvitz\, Frank Rosaly\, and Sunny Kim. Drawing on themes of change\, connection\, and the evolving nature of creative expression\, and touching on jazz\, experimental\, classical\, rock\, and noise\, they create music that’s both intentional and spontaneous. As Lee says\, “it’s about welcoming change\, blame\, mercy\, and the agency to try things differently”. \nIn this case\, their guests are artful agents JP Carter trumpet\, Meredith Bates violin\, Brian Horswill piano\, and Mili Hong drums.

SUMMARY:Horse Lords
DESCRIPTION:1601 Johnston St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R9 \nBaltimore Magazine called Comradely Objects\, the jaw-dropping 2020 album from Horse Lords\, “meticulously controlled chaos—a masterpiece of creative freedom\, contrasts\, and contradictions.” \nWith dizzyingly obsessive rhythmic energy\, Andrew Bernstein saxophone\, percussion\, electronics\, Max Eilbacher bass\, electronics\, Owen Gardner guitar\, electronics\, and drummer Booker Stardrum give frenetic gravity to an avant alloy of influences and approaches. \nThe band’s palette includes the mantra-like repetition of minimalism and global traditional musics\, complex counterpoint\, the subtleties of microtonality\, and a breadth of timbres and textures drawn from all across the avant-garde. Echoes of late-70s No Wave\, mathy post-rock\, and insistent\, iterative composers like Arnold Dreyblatt and Terry Riley ring through their restlessly musical ripples\, drones\, chugs\, and hypnotic ascents. \nNo refunds.

SUMMARY:Saba Amrei\, Lisa Cay Miller & Adrian Avendaño + Emad Armoush\, Josh Zubot & Parmela Attariwala
DESCRIPTION:1601 Johnston St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R9 \nSaba Amrei\, Lisa Cay Miller & Adrian Avendaño \nA master of extended improv technique and ardently cerebral composition\, the ever-investigative pianist Lisa Cay Miller coaxes out sounds from where few would imagine searching. Rising Iranian-Canadian vocalist Saba Amrei left Tehran at age 19 to study music at Capilano University’s award-winning program. A sublime improviser\, she also leads the Saba Amrei Iranian Quartet\, a dynamic group that focuses on jazz and Latin-influenced Iranian art music from before the 1979 revolution. Sound artist and drummer Adrian Avendaño is one of the city’s most intriguing and creatively omnivorous emerging musicians. His improvisation approach is informed by experimental electronic music\, free jazz\, soundscape composition\, and deep listening. \nA meeting of three of the West Coast’s most attuned improvisers\, each as notable for their impressive musicality as their ability to bridge diverse genres\, disciplines\, and communities. \nEmad Armoush\, Josh Zubot & Parmela Attariwala \nSyrian/Canadian multi-instrumentalist/singer Emad Armoush (Haram) melds traditional Arabic music\, free improv\, and electronic manipulations alongside some of Canada’s finest creative musicians. In 2023\, Drip Audio released Emad Armoush’s Duos\, five creative dialogues with Francois Houle\, Jesse Zubot\, Kenton Loewen\, JP Carter\, and Marina Hasselberg. His quintet Rayhan’s sophomore album comes out this fall. Violinist Josh Zubot’s adventuresome talent alights on jazz\, classical\, folk\, and the avant-garde’s back-40. A veteran of Montréal’s vibrant music scene (Patrick Watson\, Land of Kush)\, he’s found a perfect home in the genre-defying West Coast improv community since 2017\, working with Tony Wilson\, SICK BOSS\, and Dálava\, and international artists like Darius Jones and Gerald Cleaver. Rhythm Changes called the new album from Zubot’s Strings project “one of the most active and energetic albums without drums that you’ll ever hear.” Violist Parmela Attariwala interweaves performance\, creation\, and academia. She’s released three critically-acclaimed Attar Project albums of works for violin and tabla\, collaborated extensively with visual artists and choreographers—both as a composer and a movement artist—and created music for film and opera. Active in genre-bending sound since 1994\, Attariwala has worked with Carla Bley\, Ravi Naimpally\, Anthony Braxton\, Don Thompson\, and Vancouver New Music. In 2022\, she co-founded Understory\, an online creation network for Canadian improvising artists. \nDoors open at 4:30pm. “Pay What You Can” or PWYC encourages donations upon entry. Cash\, debit\, credit card and Apple pay will be accepted. Money raised goes to support Coastal Jazz. Please note – no one will be turned away for insufficient funds.
