SUMMARY:Ches Smith's Clone Row
DESCRIPTION:Ches Smith’s June 2025 release on Otherly Love Records\, Clone Row\, debuts an adventurous new quartet featuring guitarists Mary Halvorson and Liberty Ellman\, and bassist Nick Dunston. Smith finds endless possibilities in this seemingly limited instrumentation\, weaving together varied threads from his divergent earlier projects in ways that sound not quite like any of them. \nThe four renowned composer-improvisers tangle with Ches Smith’s newest compositions. Two highly individualistic guitarists swirl\, echo and double-take\, squaring off with a bass and drums team that anchors and unhinges through doubling sounds — drum machines and acoustic drums\, low-end analog synth and acoustic bass\, digital samples and repeated fragments performed in real time. In a dance of coherence and chaos\, the four musicians plunge headlong into the feedback loop of composition and improvisation armed with chemistry created by their mutual appreciation and enduring friendships. \n“This definitely ain’t your father’s guitar band\,” writes no less an expert on six-string subversion than Marc Ribot\, who penned the album’s liner notes. “It’s as if I’m hearing a Jim Hall concert in which one of us did a lot of mushrooms\, or… some post-punk post-Dave Brubeck post-trip-hop experiment with classical form.” \nFeaturing Ches Smith drums/vibes/electronics\, Mary Halvorson guitar\, Liberty Ellman guitar\, Nick Dunston bass/electronics.

SUMMARY:Open Thread
DESCRIPTION:Open Thread—the innovative Melbourne-based ensemble of cellist Peggy Lee\, saxophonist Julien Wilson\, guitarist Theo Carbo\, and drummer/percussionist Dylan van der Schyff—weaves anthemic melodies\, diverse rhythmic structures\, and ear-awakening improvised soundscapes into an idiosyncratic collective identity. \nThe group was sparked by Peggy Lee’s move from Vancouver to Melbourne in 2023 and her desire to connect with local musicians (in addition to longtime collaborator van der Schyff). This led to a gathering of attuned talents\, and a leap into the rich\, joyful possibilities of a collective sound that’s as challenging as it is rewarding. \nWith compositions from each member alongside open-eared\, emotionally far-ranging improvisations\, the group calls equally on deep vocabularies of extended techniques and their shared\, playfully experimental love of melody and song forms. “The quartet dabbles in discordant soundscapes. But overall\, Open Thread conjures a delicate sound world\, asking that listeners put aside distractions and give themselves over to these carefully wrought melodies\, thronged with strange beauty and otherness.” – Rhythms Magazine

SUMMARY:Susie Ibarra: An Ecology of Rhythm
DESCRIPTION:Susie Ibarra is a Berlin-based Filipinx-American percussionist and sound artist whose practice includes composition\, performance\, mobile sound-mapping\, multichannel audio installations\, and documentary. She is a newly-crowned 2025 Pulitzer Prize winner\, recently honoured with the esteemed award “for distinguished musical composition by an American” for Sky Islands\, her work about ecosystems and biodiversity. Constantly observing and responding to sound\, nature\, and collaborators\, Susie’s recent projects include Walking on Water\, where she used underwater sounds of breaking and melting glaciers in immersive compositions; Insectum\, where she zoomed into the world of arthropods with Graham Reynolds and Jeffrey Zeigler; and Heart and Breath: Rhythm and Tone Fields\, where she and Richard Reed Parry (of Arcade Fire) created works of expansive innerness based on real-time fluctuations of pulse and respiration. \nFor An Ecology of Rhythm\, Ibarra will be joined by French pianist Eve Risser and locals Shruti Ramani voice\, Alvaro Rojas guitar\, and James Meger bass to perform compositions inspired by the diversity of rhythms found in tree fractals\, freshwater and oceans\, and birdsongs. \nA two-time DownBeat Rising Star\, she was named one of SPIN’s “100 Greatest Drummers of Alternative Music” and has played with an array of artists\, including John Zorn\, Derek Bailey\, Ikue Mori\, William Parker\, Wadada Leo Smith\, Pauline Oliveros\, Yo La Tengo\, and Thurston Moore. \nRead Susie’s interview with the Vancouver Sun.

SUMMARY:Allie Lynn King\, Nate McBride\, and Kenton Loewen
DESCRIPTION:Anchored in improvisation\, Vancouver guitarist Allie Lynn King blends the roots of blues and jazz with the heaviness of doom metal and the abrasion of noise. Bassist Nate McBride (MESTIZX) calls Chicago home\, but his collaborations with the likes of Dennis Gonzalez\, Jeb Bishop\, and Ken Vandermark span the globe. Drummer Kenton Loewen brings fire and full ambition to everything he does\, from ad hoc improv ensembles to bands like Peregrine Falls\, Tony Wilson’s Longhand Trio\, and Haram. \nPresented in association with Queer Arts Festival.

SUMMARY:MESTIZX
DESCRIPTION:MESTIZX is an eclectic and celebratory expression of post-genre\, de-colonial latinx music. Bolivian-born singer/multi-instrumentalist Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti and Chicago expat drummer Frank Rosaly’s 2024 debut on International Anthem and Nonesuch Records is “visionary music with boundaryless imagination and creativity” (AllMusic) that steers pre-and post-colonial Latin American rhythms into a collision with avant jazz\, Chicago post-rock\, minimalism\, electronica\, and folk. \nPartners in marriage and art\, the Amsterdam-based Ferragutti and Rosaly dive into their respective Bolivian\, Brazilian\, and Puerto Rican roots to create deeply personal meditations on decolonization and the defiant power of ritual and protest. They chose the title MESTIZX — a non-gendered version of the Spanish colonial word for a “mixed person” — to both challenge and embrace the liminality of their identities and artistic practices. Ferragutti’s notable collaborators include Alabaster DePlume\, jaimie branch\, Ab Baars\, Eric Boeren\, and Mary Oliver\, while Rosaly has worked with Fennesz\, Jeff Parker\, Thurston Moore\, Nels Cline\, Colin Stetson\, and many others. \nWith Ben Boye on keys\, autoharp\, and octatrack\, James McClure on trumpet and synth\, and bassist Nate McBride\, MESTIZX’s “infectiously kinetic compositions” (The Guardian) are a movement-inducing lifeline of communal\, celebratory\, soul-baring music. \nRead their recent interview with Stir.

SUMMARY:Susie Ibarra\, Cat Toren\, Tommy Babin\, and Jen Yakamovich
DESCRIPTION:Berlin-based drummer/percussionist Susie Ibarra is joined in collaborative exploration by three of creative music’s most thoughtful improvisers. Cat Toren is a JUNO Award-winning pianist whose atmospheric abstractions and inventive harmonic layering combine deep human warmth with creative fire. Expressive West Coast bassist Tommy Babin (Haram\, Benzene) is equal parts solid\, searching\, and searing. Vancouver-based drummer Jen Yakamovich’s work focuses on the relationship between sound\, social ecologies\, and embodiment.

SUMMARY:Josh Zubot Octet
DESCRIPTION:Josh Zubot’s adventurous talent alights on jazz\, classical\, folk\, and the avant-garde’s farthest fields. A veteran of Montréal’s vibrant music scene (Patrick Watson\, Land of Kush)\, the boundary-pushing violinist/composer found an ideal home in the genre-defying West Coast improv community\, and since 2017 has worked with Tony Wilson\, SICK BOSS\, and Dálava\, as well as international artists like Darius Jones\, Matana Roberts\, and Gerald Cleaver. Rhythm Changes called his recent Strings release “one of the most active and energetic albums without drums that you’ll ever hear.” \nJosh’s recent focus has been on purely acoustic string music. This new ensemble adds a more electronic\, amplified approach and a wider orchestral palette for his soaring angular melody lines and deep rhythmic pulses\, while the cast of wildly-talented wild-card soloists find expressive colours in the polyphony and meditative calm amidst thrilling chaos. \nNot only a premiere of brand-new music for his largest group to date\, this show also marks the first performance for three Zubots! Together\, as Josh is joined by his acclaimed brother Jesse as well as his son Klee. \nFeaturing: Josh Zubot violin\, Jesse Zubot violin\, Klee Zubot guitar\, Peggy Lee cello\, James Meger acoustic/electric bass\, Francois Houle clarinet\, Gordy Li tenor saxophone\, and Dan Gaucher drums.

SUMMARY:Eve Risser: Après un Rêve
DESCRIPTION:Eve Risser is among the most prominent creators on the European scene\, and her solo prepared piano album Après un Rêve (on Clean Feed Records) is almost Zen in its organic\, dreamlike developments. “There’s a sense of open-ended experimentalism to her approach. Like setting a Rube Goldberg machine in motion\, if half the machine was unassembled at start\, and the project consisted of Risser assembling the rest in front of our eyes” (Free Jazz Collective). \nAlso:\nEve Risser Artist Talk moderated by Dylan van der Schyff • June 25 • Western Front \nTIME FLIES • June 27 • Revue Stage \nSusie Ibarra: An Ecology of Rhythm • June 28 • Revue Stage \nThanks to Institut français du Canada\, Western Front and the Canada Council for the Arts.

SUMMARY:François Houle & Gordon Grdina with Izumi Kimura & Gerry Hemingway
DESCRIPTION:You know the old saying “it takes one to know one”? In this case\, it takes two to know two\, as a pair of long standing duos connect in empathic\, searching\, and virtuosic collaboration. \nThe creative lives of basset clarinettist François Houle and guitarist/oud player Gordon Grdina have intertwined for over twenty years\, in a wide variety of projects. As HELIOTROPE\, they tap seamlessly into global traditions\, avant-jazz\, western classical music\, and free improvisation to create “an interesting form of ‘art song’\, full of melodies that are elegantly pared down and also elaborately latticed\, with the deeply haunting oud quarter tones providing both a sense of solace and gravitas” (Jazzwise). \nIrish-based Japanese pianist Izumi Kimura and US-born\, Switzerland-based drummer/vocalist/vibraphonist Gerry Hemingway began working as a duo in 2016 developing their shared language through a series of residencies and performances in Ireland (as well developing further in a trio context with bassist Barry Guy). A refined language of formal structures\, spontaneous invention\, and unique interpretations of song was presented in their 2023 debut Kairos\, “demonstrating that music can link effortlessly across time\, genres\, and any preconceptions in the hands of the right performers.” (Sammy Stein\, Platinum Mind) This tour is coordinated with the release of their second album\, How the Dust Falls released on Auricle Records. \nDon’t miss two of creative music’s most alchemical duos combining for sublime and unrepeatable sonic shaping. \nMORE: Izumi Kimura and Gerry Hemingway will also participate in TIME FLIES: Night One\, June 26th at Revue Stage. \nThis performance made possible in part due to support from the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia and Culture Ireland. \n

SUMMARY:Forever Stories of: Moving Parties
DESCRIPTION:Cellist Peggy Lee and guitarist Cole Schmidt are composers compelled to write for improvising musicians; that is\, they conceive inspiring frameworks to bring out essential\, novel contributions from some of creative music’s most vital voices. \nTheir latest album\, Forever Stories of: Moving Parties\, features an array of international guests\, including Erika Angell\, Wayne Horvitz\, Frank Rosaly\, and Sunny Kim. Drawing on themes of change\, connection\, and the evolving nature of creative expression\, and touching on jazz\, experimental\, classical\, rock\, and noise\, they create music that’s both intentional and spontaneous. As Lee says\, “it’s about welcoming change\, blame\, mercy\, and the agency to try things differently”. \nIn this case\, their guests are artful agents JP Carter trumpet\, Meredith Bates violin\, Brian Horswill piano\, and Mili Hong drums.

SUMMARY:Horse Lords
DESCRIPTION:1601 Johnston St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R9 \nBaltimore Magazine called Comradely Objects\, the jaw-dropping 2020 album from Horse Lords\, “meticulously controlled chaos—a masterpiece of creative freedom\, contrasts\, and contradictions.” \nWith dizzyingly obsessive rhythmic energy\, Andrew Bernstein saxophone\, percussion\, electronics\, Max Eilbacher bass\, electronics\, Owen Gardner guitar\, electronics\, and drummer Booker Stardrum give frenetic gravity to an avant alloy of influences and approaches. \nThe band’s palette includes the mantra-like repetition of minimalism and global traditional musics\, complex counterpoint\, the subtleties of microtonality\, and a breadth of timbres and textures drawn from all across the avant-garde. Echoes of late-70s No Wave\, mathy post-rock\, and insistent\, iterative composers like Arnold Dreyblatt and Terry Riley ring through their restlessly musical ripples\, drones\, chugs\, and hypnotic ascents. \nNo refunds.

SUMMARY:Saba Amrei\, Lisa Cay Miller & Adrian Avendaño + Emad Armoush\, Josh Zubot & Parmela Attariwala
DESCRIPTION:1601 Johnston St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R9 \nSaba Amrei\, Lisa Cay Miller & Adrian Avendaño \nA master of extended improv technique and ardently cerebral composition\, the ever-investigative pianist Lisa Cay Miller coaxes out sounds from where few would imagine searching. Rising Iranian-Canadian vocalist Saba Amrei left Tehran at age 19 to study music at Capilano University’s award-winning program. A sublime improviser\, she also leads the Saba Amrei Iranian Quartet\, a dynamic group that focuses on jazz and Latin-influenced Iranian art music from before the 1979 revolution. Sound artist and drummer Adrian Avendaño is one of the city’s most intriguing and creatively omnivorous emerging musicians. His improvisation approach is informed by experimental electronic music\, free jazz\, soundscape composition\, and deep listening. \nA meeting of three of the West Coast’s most attuned improvisers\, each as notable for their impressive musicality as their ability to bridge diverse genres\, disciplines\, and communities. \nEmad Armoush\, Josh Zubot & Parmela Attariwala \nSyrian/Canadian multi-instrumentalist/singer Emad Armoush (Haram) melds traditional Arabic music\, free improv\, and electronic manipulations alongside some of Canada’s finest creative musicians. In 2023\, Drip Audio released Emad Armoush’s Duos\, five creative dialogues with Francois Houle\, Jesse Zubot\, Kenton Loewen\, JP Carter\, and Marina Hasselberg. His quintet Rayhan’s sophomore album comes out this fall. Violinist Josh Zubot’s adventuresome talent alights on jazz\, classical\, folk\, and the avant-garde’s back-40. A veteran of Montréal’s vibrant music scene (Patrick Watson\, Land of Kush)\, he’s found a perfect home in the genre-defying West Coast improv community since 2017\, working with Tony Wilson\, SICK BOSS\, and Dálava\, and international artists like Darius Jones and Gerald Cleaver. Rhythm Changes called the new album from Zubot’s Strings project “one of the most active and energetic albums without drums that you’ll ever hear.” Violist Parmela Attariwala interweaves performance\, creation\, and academia. She’s released three critically-acclaimed Attar Project albums of works for violin and tabla\, collaborated extensively with visual artists and choreographers—both as a composer and a movement artist—and created music for film and opera. Active in genre-bending sound since 1994\, Attariwala has worked with Carla Bley\, Ravi Naimpally\, Anthony Braxton\, Don Thompson\, and Vancouver New Music. In 2022\, she co-founded Understory\, an online creation network for Canadian improvising artists. \nDoors open at 4:30pm. “Pay What You Can” or PWYC encourages donations upon entry. Cash\, debit\, credit card and Apple pay will be accepted. Money raised goes to support Coastal Jazz. Please note – no one will be turned away for insufficient funds.

SUMMARY:Dálava
DESCRIPTION:1601 Johnston St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R9 \nLed by vocalist/keyboardist Julia Úlehla and guitarist Aram Bajakian (Lou Reed\, John Zorn)\, the “utterly captivating” (Vancouver Sun) Dálava takes Czech folk melodies transcribed over 100 years ago by Úlehla’s great-grandfather and places them in a compelling contemporary context. Cinematic and wide-ranging\, the music of Dálava is beautifully rendered and hauntingly expressive. With cellist Peggy Lee and violinist Josh Zubot\, the groundbreaking Dálava offers a “stunning fusion of Middle European melody\, rock energy\, and scratchy avant-jazz textures” (Georgia Straight). \nNo refunds.

SUMMARY:Robin Holcomb\, Torsten Müller\, Dylan van der Schyff
DESCRIPTION:1601 Johnston St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R9 \nRobin Holcomb’s songs “mirror a beguiling\, bewildering world” (Rolling Stone). The Seattle-based pianist/singer/songwriter first played with Vancouver improv all-star bassist Torsten Müller and drummer Dylan van der Schyff at the 2009 Vancouver International Jazz Festival\, and the trio met most recently at Hamilton’s Something Else! Festival in 2022. Though they’ve only performed sporadically over the years\, their connection is innate and undeniable. A kind of artistically astounding mutual appreciation society\, these world-class artists dig deeply into every opportunity to create together. The trio will move fluidly through improvised exploration and novel interpretations of Holcomb’s songs\, which have been called “staggeringly beautiful” by The New York Times\, and “excellent and baffling\, just as it should be” by Q Magazine. \nDoors open at 4:30pm. “Pay What You Can” or PWYC encourages donations upon entry. SUMMARY:Team Hegdal
DESCRIPTION:1601 Johnston St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R9 \nEirik Hegdal is well-known for leading the impressive and populous Trondheim Jazz Orchestra from 2002-2017\, where he composed audacious scores and collaborated with international greats like Joshua Redman\, Pat Metheny\, and Dave Holland. Team Hegdal is the Norwegian saxophonist/clarinetist’s compositional playground for the small band format\, and over the course of five albums\, the virtuosic\, locked-in ensemble has been “undeniably responsible for the most stimulating music to come out of Norway in many\, many years (DIG Jazz).” \nWith drummer
Gard Nilssen\, bassist Ole Morten Vågan\, and Atle Nymo on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet\,
Hegdal combines exquisite melodic flair with a sometimes absurd sense of humor. Whatever game the Team is playing\, the rules about genre boundaries are very permissive; these Spellemannprisen (Norwegian GRAMMY) winners snag a bit from Olivier Messiaen\, a bit from Duke Ellington\, Ornette\, and Monk\, and a bit of anything else that strikes their artistic fancy. \nThanks to Music Norway\, Norwegian Jazz Federation\, Norsk Kulturfond – Fond for lyd og Bilde\, and Norwegian Arts Council. \nNo refunds.

SUMMARY:Sakina Abdou + Peter Knight & JP Carter
DESCRIPTION:1601 Johnston St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R9 \nSakina Abdou \nBased in Lille\, France\, saxophonist and flutist Sakina Abdou explores free improvisation and broadly experimental contemporary music with the likes of Eve Risser’s Red Desert Orchestra\, Raymond Boni\, Satoko Fujii\, and the daring experimental collective\, Muzzix. But it’s as a solo artist that her multifaceted identity really shines through: hers is a powerful\, precise sound\, sometimes caustic\, sometimes full of grace and quietude. On Goodbye Ground\, her debut album for the cutting edge New York label Relative Pitch Records\, Abdou’s intense and inventive solo explorations and extended techniques are full of suspense and surprise. \n“She can be as fiery as she is fierce\, but what has impressed me is Abdou’s ability to bring moments of swing-derived blowing to the equation\, evoking Lee Konitz as much as Peter Brötzmann. She’s definitely one to watch.” — The Quietus \nWith the support of the Consulate General of France in Vancouver. \nPeter Knight & JP Carter \nIt’s true: Peter Knight and JP Carter both play the trumpet. But that fact is only part of the larger\, weirder\, more deliciously bewildering truth about two of contemporary creative music’s most envelope-pushing\, distinctive sound-shapers. \nMelbourne-based Peter Knight uses extended techniques\, electroacoustic processing\, rhythmic overlapping\, slow harmonic evolution\, and subtle timbral evolution to shift our perceptions of linear time. In their “Best of 2022”\, Headphone Commute called his latest solo album\, SHADOW PHASE\, “a carefully curated exercise in reflective restraint\, dreamy atmospherics\, and ebbing dynamics.” \nOne of Vancouver’s foremost ambassadors of invention\, JP Carter has been a fog\, an electrical storm\, a swarm of locusts\, a wistful memory and a harrowing premonition\, a firefly in a jar and a barge-load of fireworks going off all at once in his wide-ranging improv collaborations and genre-agnostic work with Destroyer\, Haram\, Fond of Tigers\, SICK BOSS\, and more. \nDoors open at 4:30pm. “Pay What You Can” or PWYC encourages donations upon entry. SUMMARY:Peregrine Falls + Shahzad Ismaily
DESCRIPTION:1601 Johnston St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R9 \nJUNO-nominated breathers of instrumental fire\, Peregrine Falls is Gordon Grdina on guitars and Kenton Loewen on drums. Sometimes their respiration is like a mother’s soft and loving coo\, or a calm exhalation in a placid meadow\, but it’s not long before it escalates to a pure\, unbreathmintable chaos of demons screaming from the edge of an erupting volcano. This ain’t your grandma’s parlour music…unless your grandma’s a total gem who likes their parlour to shake with Ethio/Cuban/Arabic-inflected punk rock and jazz metal. \nThey’re joined by the incomparable multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily\, who The New York Times called “one of music’s most in-demand collaborators\, flitting like a mischievous butterfly through genres as diverse as honeyed folk\, rambunctious free jazz and spectral meditations sung in Urdu”. \nA deeply empathic player\, Ismaily has worked with the likes of Laurie Anderson\, Butch Morris\, Bonnie “Prince” Billy\, Yoko Ono\, Colin Stetson\, and Marc Ribot. Love in Exile\, the collaborative trio he shares with Arooj Aftab and Vijay Iyer\, was nominated at the 2024 GRAMMYs for Best Alternative Jazz Album\, a brand-new category added to reflect the explosion of genre-blending\, envelope-pushing hybrid forms of creative music.

SUMMARY:Umeda\, Hegdal\, Stackenäs\, Naylor\, Loewen
DESCRIPTION:1601 Johnston St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R9 \nFor Amalia Umeda\, every performance tells a big story\, for the very first time. The Polish violinist traverses a wide emotional landscape where authenticity\, raw tension\, and risk-taking are the earth\, sea\, and sky. Saxophonist/clarinetist Eirik Hegdal has worked with Jeff Parker\, Joshua Redman\, and Pat Metheny. The former artistic leader of the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra\, Hegdal has written for the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra\, Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra\, and his crackling quartet\, Team Hegdal. Called “cunningly enigmatic” by Jazz Weekly\, Swedish guitarist David Stackenäs brings extended technique\, an armada of pedals\, and a novel\, disruptive approach to solo work and collaborations with avant-garde heavyweights like Thurston Moore\, Mats Gustafsson\, and Ken Vandermark. The Vancouver-born\, Berlin-based keyboardist Tyson Naylor “has an impish sense of humour that shows an affinity for the merrymakers of the ICP Orchestra. You can hear Misha Mengelberg’s spare\, subtle intervals and dry-martini wit in his playing\, though it’s Mengelberg filtered through Brad Mehldau” (Signal to Noise). A fount of expressive fire\, the multifaceted\, JUNO Award-winning drummer Kenton Loewen cut his teeth in Vancouver’s free jazz\, indie-folk\, and DIY punk underground. He’s one half of daring punk-jazz duo Peregrine Falls\, one tenth of avant-Arabic ensemble Haram\, and one hell of a drummer. \nSpecial thanks to Jazztopad Festival (National Forum of Music)\, Wroclaw\, Poland \nAmalia Umeda presented in collaboration with Jazztopad Festival (National Forum of Music)\, Wroclaw\, Poland \nDoors open at 4:30pm. “Pay what you can” or PWYC encourages donations upon entry. DESCRIPTION:1601 Johnston St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R9 \nA Danish/Norwegian quartet stacked with some of the freshest\, most creative players on the Scandinavian jazz scene\, Emmeluth’s Amoeba is “provocative\, mind blowing\, and emotionally engaging” (Salt Peanuts). \nPianist Christian Balvig has made a mark leading his own ensemble\, playing with the colossal Danish supergroup Efterklang\, and composing for large orchestras like the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra. Guitarist Karl Bjorå has recorded and toured extensively with groups like Megalodon Collective\, Yes Deer\, and his own band. Daniel is a keeper of Yolngu Manikay\, indigenous songs from North East Arnhem Land that can be traced back more than 40\,000 years\, making them the world’s oldest continuously practised music tradition. Sunny moves between English and Korean\, intoning gestures that invoke the rawest of elemental forces. Together they sing of the stars\, of fire\, and of the cooling rain\, while the drone of David Wilfred’s didgeridoo and atmospheres created by trumpeter/sound artist Peter Knight\, clarinetist Aviva Endean\, and violinist Amalia Umeda draw on the minimalism of Brian Eno and Jon Hassell to create a bed for these beautifully contrasting voices. \nSonglines UK’s 5-star review of the unprecedented ensemble’s debut release raved that “while many contemporary projects strive to combine ancient and modern influences\, this innovative and ethereal musical alliance actually achieves that lofty goal – with old cultural ground being respected\, while new artistic ground is broken. Hand to Earth is a truly exquisite album.” \nPresented in collaboration with Jazztopad Festival (National Forum of Music)\, Wroclaw\, Poland \nThe Crow was co-commissioned by Melbourne International Jazz Festival and Jazztopad Festival \nDoors open at 4:30pm. “Pay What You Can” or PWYC encourages donations upon entry. Cash\, debit\, credit card and Apple pay will be accepted. Money raised goes to support Coastal Jazz. Please note – no one will be turned away for insufficient funds.

SUMMARY:Davis / Lee / Babin / van der Schyff
DESCRIPTION:1601 Johnston St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R9 \nThe New York Times praised Caroline Davis’ “talent for deriving long\, dizzying motifs from smaller melodic cells.” The innovative Brooklyn-based saxophonist/vocalist joins three of the West Coast’s most empathic players for a late night of boundless improv. “One of the world’s most accomplished practitioners of improvisational cello” (Musicworks)\, Peggy Lee exudes mastery in both quietude and riot. With almost 200 recordings to his credit\, Dylan van der Schyff (Achim Kaufmann\, Ken Vandermark) is a drummer of incomparable vision and sensitivity\, while bassist Tommy Babin (Haram) plays with a fiery thrill of discovery usually associated with mad scientists. \nThis show is part of our Granville Island Jazz series

SUMMARY:Caroline Davis' Alula ft. Chris Tordini and Kate Gentile
DESCRIPTION:1601 Johnston St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R9 \nInitial inspiration for Caroline Davis’ “most formally innovative group yet” (New York Times) sprang from the pages of The Sibley Guide to Birds\, specifically the hidden part of a wing that appears like magic during take-off and landing. The Brooklyn-based saxophonist/vocalist’s complex\, beautiful balance of improv and composed material reveals and occludes\, taking unexpected flight paths to wherever Davis points her remarkable imagination. A Downbeat Rising Star winner who’s worked with Marquis Hill\, Lee Konitz\, Angelica Sanchez\, and Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier\, Caroline Davis’ Alula features Chris Tordini (Tyshawn Sorey\, John Hollenbeck) bass and Kate Gentile (Ava Mendoza\, Matt Mitchell) drums. \nThis show is part of our Granville Island Jazz series

SUMMARY:Marina Hasselberg + Matt Choboter
DESCRIPTION:1601 Johnston St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R9 \nMarina Hasselberg \nEclectic and award-winning cellist Marina Hasselberg “has become a standout presence on Vancouver’s music scene” (Georgia Straight). Like her new Jesse Zubot-produced album Red\, her solo sets are a provocative\, deeply personal mix of classification-resistant written works and adventurous improvised excursions\, with Hasselberg employing extended techniques\, a variety of bows and accessories\, and electronics to skirt the fine line between the known and the unknown. \nMatt Choboter \nAcross five albums and countless collaborations\, composer/pianist Matt Choboter has made “post-jazz of a distinctly personalized kind” (Textura). Marking the release of his first solo album Postcards of Nostalgia on ILK Music (Denmark)\, Choboter attaches transducers to the piano’s soundboard (making it a speaker) in order to play electronic improvisations\, drone collages\, and field recordings in a remarkable “duet” with himself.
