SUMMARY:Peggy Lee Band
DESCRIPTION:Cellist/composer Peggy Lee is a giant in Vancouver’s creative music scene. Equally adept in way-out free improv\, the classical rigor of her work with the VSO\, and the arcing melodic texturing of her detailed\, emotionally deep compositions\, Lee exudes mastery in quietude and in fire. Premiering new music alongside selections from its rich back catalogue\, this all-star band inhabits a sound world where “melodies slide in and out of abstraction; skewed marches butt up against folk songs; chamber music niceties crumble under the assault of funk and psychedelia.” (Georgia Straight) \nThis concert is presented with the support of Arlene James\, in honour of the memory of Ralph and Barbara James\, her parents\, who both loved jazz. \nWant more bang for your buck? SUMMARY:Dálava
DESCRIPTION:Led by vocalist Julia Úlehla and guitarist Aram Bajakian (Lou Reed\, John Zorn)\, the “utterly captivating” (Vancouver Sun) Dálava takes Czech folk melodies transcribed over 100 years ago by Úlehla’s great-grandfather and places them in a compelling contemporary context. Cinematic and wide-ranging\, the music of Dálava is beautifully rendered and hauntingly expressive. With Peggy Lee cello\, and Josh Zubot violin\, the groundbreaking Dálava offers a “stunning fusion of Middle European melody\, rock energy\, and scratchy avant-jazz textures” (Georgia Straight). \nWant more bang for your buck? SUMMARY:Turner/Ryga Quintet - Tribute to Charlie Parker
DESCRIPTION:To mark the 100th anniversary of the great Charlie Parker’s birth\, five of Canada’s finest jazz players come together for intrepid interpretations of the saxophone maestro’s music. \nIn his short life\, Bird revolutionized jazz\, setting a high bar for harmonic and rhythmic complexity\, rich textures\, and dizzying virtuosity. As Miles Davis said\, “you can tell the history of jazz in four words: Louis Armstrong. Charlie Parker.” Campbell Ryga saxophone\, Brad Turner trumpet\, Sharon Minemoto piano\, André Lachance bass\, and John Lee drums do their part to celebrate that rich history.

SUMMARY:Snotty Nose Rez Kids
DESCRIPTION:The duo of Yung Trybez and Young D\, from the Haisla Nation\, Kitamaat Village BC burst onto the Canadian hip-hop scene in 2017 and have shown no signs of stopping since. To date\, they have put out three wildly successful full-length records\, toured internationally\, made it onto back-to-back Polaris Prize shortlists\, won and been nominated for JUNOs and Western Canadian Music Awards\, and made countless “best of” lists. If you’ve seen them live\, you understand why—their music seamlessly weaves trap beats with lyricism that challenges Indigenous stereotypes\, creating a new generation of club bangers that are equal parts thought-provoking and dance worthy. \nSpecial thanks to Kinaxis InConcert and Full Circle First Nations Performance \nWant more bang for your buck? SUMMARY:Bruno Hubert Trio with Brad Turner
DESCRIPTION:Presented with   \nA native of Maniwaki Quebec Bruno started to play drums in his first rock band at the age of 14\, playing rock music in local bars and in the town marching band. His plans to become a professional drummer were soon derailed when college requirements obliged him to study piano. With a deep sense of swing and beguiling melodic lines evocative of Keith Jarrett\, Herbie Hancock\, and Bill Evans\, he pilots medley-like journeys through jazz standards\, soul\, rock\, and pop-influenced pieces. Hubert has recorded with artists as diverse as Denzil Sinclair and his long-time idol Gino Vannelli\, and starred in a feature film\, Bruno’s Blues\, alongside many other stalwarts of the Vancouver scene. The film is available on iTunes. \nBrad Turner’s phenomenal talents as a trumpeter\, pianist\, drummer and composer make him one of Canada’s most in-demand and highly esteemed musicians. As a leader\, Brad has released seven albums\, six as a trumpeter with his quartet\, and one as a pianist with his trio. In addition to JUNOs for his work with the trio Metalwood\, he has also won a National Jazz Award for Composer of the Year\, Musician of the Year\, Trumpeter of the Year\, Producer of the Year\, and the Vancouver Mayor’s Arts Award\, among many other honours. Brad is a member of the jazz studies faculty at Capilano University\, and plays Cannonball trumpets. \nWith James Meger bass and Joel Fountain drums. \n  \nPresented with the additional support of

Formed during their time at Capilano University\, the trio plays genre-defying original music inspired by exploring soundscapes and painting melodic stories. SUMMARY:SICK BOSS & Jaimie Branch's Fly or Die II: Bird Dogs of Paradise
DESCRIPTION:*RSVPs are now closed for this performance. But don’t despair! We anticipate having capacity for a limited number of walk-up tickets. If you’d like to attend\, we recommend arriving by 7:30pm and planning for a short time in an outdoor line-up. \n\nIn its sinuous melodies and complex rhythms\, SICK BOSS immediately calls to mind composer Cole Schmidt’s work in award-winning outfit Pugs & Crows. Drawing from creative improvisation\, folk\, and Jimi Hendrix\, SICK BOSS’ sweeping\, cerebral originals are taken to unexpected places by Vancouver sonic all-stars Peggy Lee cello\, Josh Zubot violin\, James Meger bass\, Dan Gaucher drums\, and Cole Schmidt guitar. \n\nFLY or DIE II: bird dogs of paradise is the much-anticipated follow-up to composer\, trumpeter\, and (now) singer Jaimie Branch’s debut Fly or Die\, which was dubbed one of the “Best Albums of 2017” by The New York Times\, Los Angeles Times\, NPR Music\, WIRE\, Stereogum\, Aquarium Drunkard\, and more. bird dogs of paradise is the result of a never-satisfied Branch pushing her distinct style of progressive composition to new heights — while also stepping forward as a vocalist for the first time. Her unflinching\, unhinged mix of anger and humour\, plus searing trumpet piled atop massive down-tuned blues creates a a sound that’s unequivocally her own. Conjuring up moments of real reckoning—hopefulness\, hopelessness\, danger\, and joy—Branch dares you to feel again\, or as she says\, “now sound the trumpets and get ready to roll.” \nWith Jason Ajemian acoustic bass/electronics\, Lester St Louis cello\, and Chad Taylor drums. \n\nRSVP for this free show and guarantee admittance!\nWalk-ups welcome if capacity allows. Tickets not picked up by 7:45pm will be released. \nAll RSVPs entered to win a pair of tickets to Hiromi at the Vancouver Playhouse\, June 23 (during the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival). \nMade possible with the financial support of

SUMMARY:Company B Jazz Band
DESCRIPTION:Equal parts sassy and sweet\, the seven-piece Company B Jazz Band blends old time jazz and swing with lush\, pitch perfect melodies\, and an infectious sense of fun. Classic repertoire of the ‘20s-‘50s (think Andrews Sisters to Patsy Cline) is given a three-part female harmony treatment backed by a seriously swinging clarinet\, bass\, guitar\, and drums combo.
