Born Edward Larry Gordon\, Laraaji’s music transcends conventional boundaries\, seamlessly merging ambient textures with cosmic vibrations\, creating an immersive and deeply introspective sonic journey. \nLaraaji has been an unwavering practitioner of celestial sounds\, operating in his own lane for decades\, an 80 year-young American multi-instrumentalist visionary sound artist LARAAJI NADABRAHMANANDA & one of the pioneers of the new-age and ambient philosophies. In the early 70s\, Laraaji lived in New York\, admired Eastern mysticism and performed in parks playing a vintage stringed instrument called “Zither.” In 1978 Brian Eno saw Laraaji’s Washington Square Village performance and helped him record and release an album called “Ambient 3: Day of Radiance.” The release introduced this American musician to a wide audience\, and his next 40 albums made him a true legend of meditative music. \nFeaturing special guests Michelle Helene Mackenzie and Hotspring. \nThis show is a co-presentation between Coastal Jazz and A Week in Paradise.

DESCRIPTION:1218 Cartwright St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R8 \nOne of the most iconic rhythm sections in modern music\, drummer Brendan Canty and bassist Joe Lally were the insistent engine of DC post-hardcore legends Fugazi for over 15 years. In 2016\, they formed Messthetics with guitar virtuoso Anthony Pirog\, and released two albums of turbulent\, propulsive\, groove-laden instrumental art rock. Drawing on jazz\, punk\, dub\, and free improv\, they’re equally at home in an expansive take on Sonny Sharrock’s “Once Upon a Time” as they are in blazing\, math-metal riff barrages. \nIn late-2021\, they were joined onstage by acclaimed saxophonist James Brandon Lewis\, and sparks flew. Lally recalls a full-throttle passage when Lewis and Pirog began trading solos. As the intensity escalated\, the bassist felt simultaneously challenged and exhilarated. “You’re just holding on and going\, it sounds great\,” he remembers telling himself. “Just keep going!” Thankfully for fans of next-level\, genre-defying music\, they have. Called “one of the modern titans of the tenor” by All About Jazz\, the ecstatic fervour of James Brandon Lewis’ playing points back to John Coltrane\, Pharoah Sanders\, and the rich tradition of the Impulse! label–a tradition that the combustive quartet is now a part of with their eponymous 2024 release. For his part\, Lewis relishes the chance to plug into the power of the Messthetics’ punk-adjacent milieu\, calling their provocative real-time musical conversation a “high point of musical bonding and purely unapologetic energy! Driven by poet/vocalist Camae Ayewa’s (aka Moor Mother) searing narrations of Black trauma\, survival\, and power\, Irreversible Entanglements brings first-wave free jazz’s tradition of resistance acutely into the now. This is deeply improvised rhythm music full of love\, protest\, and social commitment; IE are honouring the past\, speaking to the present\, and making sonic claims on the future. Featuring bassist Luke Stewart\, saxophonist Keir Neuringer\, trumpeter Aquiles Navarro\, and drummer Tcheser Holmes\, their new album Protect Your Light — on the legendary Impulse! Label — is “a major statement from artists who are as much the new wave of jazz as John Coltrane\, Albert Ayler\, Archie Shepp et al were in their day.” – The Wire \nIE came together spontaneously\, organically\, in April of 2015 at Musicians Against Police Brutality\, a day of protest sound and discussion in Brooklyn. All were artists and activists of varying degrees: Philadelphia-based Ayewa and Neuringer\, and D.C.-based Stewart as veterans of the Mid-Atlantic noise-hardcore-experimental scene\, while Holmes and Navarro as recent New England Conservatory grads. The studio albums that followed—2020’s Who Sent You? and 2021’s Open The Gates—developed this legend further. \nIn 2023\, IE signed to Impulse! Records and released its most accomplished work to date\, Protect Your Light\, primarily recorded at New Jersey’s historic Van Gelder Studios. His tenth album In the Spirit of Ntu is the inaugural release on the newly formed Blue Note Africa imprint\, and though it’s guided by cosmological and spiritual concepts\, “what you’ll feel most acutely isn’t incorporeal but deeply human\, a potent brew of fury\, joy\, and solidarity” (JazzTimes). A long-time collaborator with Shabaka Hutchings\, Makhathini has also worked with Wynton Marsalis\, Jaleel Shaw\, and scores of other greats\, carrying influences from John Coltrane and McCoy Tyner alongside the spirit of interconnectedness at the core of the ancient philosophy of Ntu. \nDrawing on the powerful echoes of pre-colonial Africa\, Nduduzo Makhathini’s ambitious music is an act of cultural reclamation and spiritual communion\, using remarkable technique in search of what he calls “that moment of revelation\, or in the African context\, a moment of divination.” With Francisco Mela drums and Swelakhe Duma Bell Le Pere bass.

Coltrane connections extend to the album’s sessions as well. Recorded on Coltrane’s birthday\, at the legendary Van Gelder studio\, using the same gear that captured A Love Supreme\, Collier and company channelled some heavy mystic energy into an instant classic of their own. DESCRIPTION:1218 Cartwright St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R8 \nIn 2022\, Jesse Zubot and co-composer Wayne Lavallee invited the acclaimed singer-songwriter Pura Fé to contribute vocals to their score for Bones of Crows\, directed by Marie Clements. Interacting with the chamber ensemble that Zubot conducted in real time\, Fé completely inhabited the music’s tense atmospherics and sweeping emotional range; most of her improvisations were one-take magic. Zubot and Fé return to this sonic landscape for the challenging\, spirit-animating collaboration Chamber of Bones. \nPura Fé is an artist\, activist\, and storyteller of Tuscarora and Taino heritage\, known for her impassioned vocals\, slide guitar fireworks\, and powerful songs that touch on folk\, gospel\, and blues traditions. In 1987\, she co-founded the renowned Indigenous women’s a cappella group Ulali\, and since 1995 she’s been releasing solo albums and collaborating with the likes of Indigo Girls and Robbie Robertson. \nWith multiple JUNOs\, WCMAs\, and National Jazz Awards on the mantle\, Jesse Zubot is known for virtuosic violin playing\, cutting edge production style\, and collaborations with avant-innovators like Evan Parker and Joe Fonda\, indie artists Dan Mangan and Stars\, and the incomparable Tanya Tagaq. In recent years\, he’s created enveloping scores for films like Indian Horse and Monkey Beach. \nPura Fé will play solo\, followed by this exceptional musical connection with conductor/performer Jesse and an ensemble featuring Josh Zubot violin/viola\, Trent Freeman violin\, Wesley Hardisty five-string violin\, Meredith Bates violin/viola\, Marina Hasselberg cello\, and Peggy Lee cello. \nPresented in association with Talking Stick Festival

DESCRIPTION:[CANCELLED] \n“Heavy\, meditative\, and tender” (New Yorker)\, Les Filles de Illighadad bring a sublime sound from central Niger. Guitarist/vocalist Fatou Seidi Ghali leads this ensemble through a hybrid of two distinct sides of Tuareg music: the hypnotic\, polyphonic rhythms of tende—performed exclusively by women—and the newer\, dreamily melodic guitar-based ‘desert blues’ that—until Ghali—had been made only by men. With trance-inducing singing\, chanting\, clapping\, and the centring low rhythm of the askalabo—a partially submerged calabash—the ground-breaking group’s communal spirit is at turns celebratory\, mournful\, and healing.
