SUMMARY:Christine Jensen Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Canadian saxophonist and composer Christine Jensen has lent a distinct voice to the creative jazz scene of the past twenty-five years. Her jazz orchestra recordings Treelines and Habitat were JUNO Award-winners for Jazz Album of the Year (group) in 2011 and 2014\, respectively\, while her third jazz orchestra album Harbour (Justin-Time Records) is nominated in this year’s signature celebration of Canadian talent. \nQuite a regular at the JUNOs\, her dynamic and expressive Quartet album Day Moon won for Jazz Album of the Year (solo) in 2024. Inspired by seeing a full moon as the sun was rising during the global pandemic\, it’s an apt image for a suite of music that taps into deep reservoirs of emotion while keeping “enough uplift and whimsy in the playing to remedy any unsought melancholy. The welcome catharsis in Jensen’s vision expands both ways” (Downbeat). \nJensen is constantly in motion as an improviser\, composer and bandleader. A Downbeat Critic’s Poll Rising Star winner in multiple categories (Big Band\, Arranger\, and Soprano Saxophonist)\, she’s performed with Jeremy Pelt\, Phil Dwyer\, Donny McCaslin\, Swedish pianist Maggi Olin\, and scores of other creative jazz greats\, including her sister Ingrid Jensen and their Infinitude ensemble featuring Ben Monder. \nHer Quartet features inventive first-call Montréal players in drummer Jim Doxas and bassist Adrian Vedady\, as well as NYC-based pianist Gary Versace\, whose remarkable resumé includes work with John Scofield\, John Abercrombie\, and Maria Schneider. \n“Always a compelling writer\, capable of strong lyricism combined with harmonic invention and plenty of narrative twists and turns\, Jensen’s music not only impresses on a first encounter\, but reveals more with each and every listen.” – All About Jazz \nThis is an accessible venue. If assistance is required please contact: boxoffice@coastaljazz.ca \nPlease Note: Seating is limited with a mix of seating and standing room. Arrive early for seating. Box Office & Lobby open at 6:30 PM; House opens at 7:00 PM; the show starts at 7:30 PM \nWe are grateful for the support of the Alan and Gwendoline Pyatt Foundation.

SUMMARY:Nubya Garcia
DESCRIPTION:Nubya Garcia isn’t an artist you can easily classify. Is it jazz? Sure\, the London-born saxophonist\, composer and bandleader grew up studying the genre under noted pianist Nikki Yeoh at Camden Music. But it isn’t until you listen to albums like 2020’s Source and 2024’s Odyssey that you hear broader creativity shining through: it’s jazz\, classical\, dub\, R&B\, and whatever else Garcia wants to convey. It all comes from a place of exploration and self-study\, of wanting to do all the things across all disciplines while ignoring arbitrary boxes that don’t fit. \nGarcia’s 2024 sophomore album Odyssey (Concord Jazz) is a majestic feat on which she blends orchestral arrangements with R&B\, jazz\, broken beat\, and dub\, resulting in a grand\, nuanced record that feels airy and celestial without sacrificing the groove. It’s a deeply personal offering about her trek to falling back in love with musical composition over the past four years. \nHer 2020 debut album Source was released via Concord Jazz to massive critical acclaim\, an NPR Tiny Desk Concert\, a Pitchfork “Best New Music” review and a Rolling Stone “Album of the Month” mention. The New York Times called it “a sweeping set of jazz with Afro-Caribbean influences that funnels a life’s worth of experiences into an hourlong listen.” The album entered the UK charts in the Top 30\, and Garcia was one of just three artists selected to perform live at Glastonbury’s 2020 Experience\, which aired on the BBC to thousands of viewers. Source was also nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize\, an award given to the best album from the UK or Ireland. \nCalling Garcia’s latest release “a veritable quest of a record\,” Pitchfork raved that “Odyssey isn’t just full of ideas; it’s full of good ideas—rich\, challenging\, and inspiring in their largess.” \nFronting an incandescent quartet\, Nubya Garcia is unquestionably “one of the leading lights of the new young London jazz scene” (Jazzwise). \nThis is an accessible venue.

SUMMARY:Marquis Hill: Composers Collective
DESCRIPTION:One of the finest trumpeters in jazz today\, Marquis Hill is a composer and bandleader whose “pan-musical vision recognizes all Black music—jazz\, R&B\, hip-hop\, etc.—as one long continuum” (The Big Takeover). \nBorn and raised on Chicago’s South Side\, Hill absorbed the jazz tradition formally and from gigs and jam sessions with elders. By the time he won the 2014 Thelonious Monk competition\, his reputation for fluid virtuosity had been firmly established as a member of the Chicago Jazz Orchestra\, an in-demand sideman\, and a leader with several buzzworthy albums to his credit. Since then\, he’s received glowing critical acclaim\, topped the DownBeat “Rising Star–Trumpet” Critics Poll\, toured nonstop with his group Blacktet\, and worked with a jazz who’s-who that includes Marcus Miller\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Kurt Elling\, Joe Lovano\, and Makaya McCraven. \n“Composers Collective: Beyond the Jukebox” celebrates the compositions of friends\, colleagues\, and heroes invited to compose a piece with Marquis specifically in mind. “I was thinking about the tradition in jazz where Dexter Gordon would record a Lee Morgan composition\, or Freddie Hubbard would record a Wayne Shorter composition\,” muses Hill. “I started to wonder\, ‘When did we stop doing that\, playing each other’s music?’ In addition to Hill’s soulful\, eclectic modern jazz compositions\, the new album includes pieces by Ernest Dawkins\, Jeff Parker\, Marcus Strickland\, SABA\, and Joel Ross\, plus guest appearances by Gerald Clayton\, Makaya McCraven\, Caroline Davis\, and more. \nJoining Hill for this year’s Vancouver International Jazz Festival performance are pianist Michael King and drummer Corey Fonville\, who both contributed pieces to the album\, as well as bassist Micah Collier\, a rising star in the Chicago scene. \nThis is an accessible venue.

SUMMARY:Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio
DESCRIPTION:Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio—or DLO3 as it’s sometimes called—specializes in the lost art of “feel-good music”\, and what feels just right can be different every night. \nBandleader Delvon Lamarr is as masterful on the mighty Hammond as he is at connecting with audiences. Called “a sonic encyclopedia” by American Songwriter\, Lamarr shapes unforgettable live experiences by responding to the vibe of a particular night and drawing readily from the 1960s organ jazz stylings of Jimmy Smith and Baby Face Willette\, the snappy soul strut of Booker T. & The M.G.’s and The Meters\, and surprising treats and teases from Motown\, Stax Records\, the blues\, and beyond. \nThe trio started from humble beginnings in 2015\, but since then has released several Billboard charting albums and toured the world to sold-out venues\, while Delvon Lamarr—a self-taught organ virtuoso—was named a Rising Star in the 70th Annual DownBeat Critics Poll (2022). \nThe spirit of variety and excitement extends to the DLO3 lineup as well. Lamarr rounds out his trio with a shifting crew of top-flight guitarists and drummers worldwide who help fuel the energy and sheer un-repeatability of each live performance. It’s a heady concoction of beautiful connection and irresistible groove that goes straight to the heart and soul. \nThis is an accessible venue.

SUMMARY:Musicmusicmusic Oversized
DESCRIPTION:“No rules\, just fun” – All About Jazz \nWith a passion for experimentation and an ever-present joy for playing\, MUSICMUSICMUSIC takes on classic jazz compositions as well as originals by the group’s “Jazz in Sweden” prize winning pianist\, Fabian Kallerdahl. One of Sweden’s most adventurous contemporary jazz groups\, MMM is acclaimed for their refreshing humour\, resistance to convention\, and performances that reach audiences far beyond the traditional borders of jazz. \nThe members of the trio have been the same since they formed in 2003\, with Fabien alongside bassist Josef Kallerdahl and Michael Edlund drums\, and that’s how they’ll perform at Tyrant Studios. For their Performance Works show\, they’ll not only expand\, but be outnumbered by four of the West Coast’s finest creative players in Heather Beaty flute\, Sam Davidson woodwinds\, Meredith Bates violin\, and Parmela Attariwala viola to create MUSICMUSICMUSIC Oversized (perhaps “MUSICMUSICMUSICMUSICMUSICMUSICMUSIC” was already taken?).

SUMMARY:New Jazz Underground
DESCRIPTION:“These Juilliard-trained musicians clearly know the jazz tradition\, but push at the corners of hard bop and hip-hop. Classy and classic.” – NPR \nNew Jazz Underground has been blowing up online and on stage\, garnering tonnes of acclaim for their distinctive merging of traditional jazz sensibilities with modern influences like hip-hop\, house/afro-beat\, and Afro-Cuban music. The core of the group met at Juilliard and began playing in NYC parks during 2020’s lockdowns\, before viral videos like “Harlem to Havana”\, “f**k/s**t/c**t/jazz”\, and “they can hate but we still swingin” introduced the band’s exuberant chemistry and ambitious musicality to millions of music fans around the world. Vancouver jazz lovers and hip hop heads will giddily unite when the quartet kicks into “MF DOOM SUiTE”\, their harmonically imaginative\, coolly grooving tribute to the late metalfaced rap icon. \nEach NJU member is a prodigious artist in their own right. Bassist/composer Sebastian Rios is a 2024 Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award winner and a long-time student of bass legend Ron Carter. Rios and drummer TJ Reddick have been sidemen for the likes of Jon Batiste\, Sullivan Fortner\, Emmet Cohen\, and ELEW. Winner of the 2023 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition\, Noah Halpern has been a creative force on the New York jazz scene with his own quartet and work with Wynton Marsalis\, Jason Moran\, KNOWER\, Ulysses Owens\, Lalah Hathaway\, and many more. A Juilliard alumn and now faculty member\, pianist Isaiah J. Thompson is known for his work with the John Pizzarelli Trio as well as performances with Christian McBride\, Steve Turre\, Catherine Russell\, Buster Williams\, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. \nNew Jazz Underground have dedicated their lives to the legacy of jazz and the promise of dynamic new creative paths. SUMMARY:Wayne Horvitz Electric Circus
DESCRIPTION:1218 Cartwright St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R8 \nLed by renowned keyboardist/composer/conductor Wayne Horvitz\, whose “extraordinary melodic instincts make anything he attempts a riveting pleasure” (The Stranger)\, Electric Circus is a large and charged ensemble that uses sampled grooves\, improvised sonic exploration\, light projections\, and a boatload of talent to reimagine classic soul\, funk\, rock\, and psych. \nStepping away from the keys for this project\, Horvitz uses “conduction” – in the tradition of Butch Morris – to guide players through a psychedelic montage of tight ensemble sections\, full-on dance party grooves\, and far-reaching improvisations that use motifs from classic recordings by James Brown\, Willie Dixon\, Captain Beefheart\, Miles Davis\, The Dead\, The Pointer Sisters\, Sun Ra\, The Clash\, and Parliament Funkadelic as jumping-off points towards thrilling new sonic possibilities. \nAfter performing Electric Circus exclusively in Seattle since 2015\, Horvitz is now presenting the band across Europe\, Canada\, and the US\, using first-call local musicians and special guests. In Vancouver\, Wayne will lead a stacked 14-piece ensemble featuring French saxophonist Sakina Abdou and Brooklyn-based Shahzad Ismaily on electric bass – both of whom will be doing a range of shows and projects this year as Coastal Jazz Artists in Residence – alongside local players Nikko Whitworth acoustic bass\, Meredith Bates violin/viola\, Kai Basanta drums\, Jeff Younger guitar\, Madeleine Elkins guitar\, Chris Gestrin keys\, JP Carter trumpet\, Nebyu Yohannes trombone\, Gordy Li tenor sax\, Chris Kelly baritone sax\, Jack Duncan congas/percussion\, and vocalist Shruti Ramani. \nNo refunds.

SUMMARY:We All Break
DESCRIPTION:1218 Cartwright St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R8 \nLike most great art forms\, jazz developed by combining previously distinct\, disparate elements into something new. We All Break follows in this tradition with their remarkable merging of traditional Haitian Vodou music and au courant composition and improvisation on the groundbreaking Path of Seven Colors. Called “a marvel” by AllMusic\, “a sublime magnum opus” by Jazziz\, and “stunningly original and mesmerizing in its ritualistic power” by DownBeat\, the extraordinary and innovative project is the brainchild of drummer/composer Ches Smith\, well-known to fans of cutting-edge jazz\, improv\, and avant-rock through his work with Secret Chiefs\, Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog\, John Zorn\, Trevor Dunn\, and many others. \nSmith’s dedication to Haitian Vodou began more than twenty years ago. “My attraction was instant and strong\,” he says. “I was captivated\, likely because things central in the various musics I play – polyrhythm\, polytonality\, improvisation\, extended timbral awareness\, tension and release\, channeled aggression and power\, and most vitally surprise – I found again\, and anew\, in this traditional form.” \nWe All Break brings together world-class experimental musicians and creative improvisers in pianist Matt Mitchell\, alto saxophonist Tim Berne\, bassist Nick Dunston\, vocalists Sirene Dantor Rene\, Lalin St. Juste\, and Tossie Long\, and master drummers Daniel Brevil\, Markus Schwartz\, and Fanfan Jean-Guy Rene to create something that’s not only “profoundly original\, innovative and important”\, but an “infinitely beautiful and pure\, truly rare work that – at this level of quality – has never really been even imagined before (All About Jazz).” \nNo refunds.

SUMMARY:Ulysses Owens Jr.'s Generation Y
DESCRIPTION:1218 Cartwright St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R8 \nA drummer who The New York Times says “takes a back seat to no one\,” Ulysses Owens Jr. “balances excitement gracefully and shines with innovation.” The three-time Grammy-winner has been the driving force behind great artists like Nicholas Payton\, Christian McBride\, Kurt Elling\, Gregory Porter\, and Wynton Marsalis\, but over the past five years\, Ulysses’ career has shifted from “young lion” side-man to leader and mentor\, guiding the next generation of talent via his many performance\, production\, and educational outreach projects. \nHis eighth album as leader\, A New Beat\, was recorded at the legendary Rudy Van Gelder Studios in New Jersey and is out now on the Cellar Jazz record label. In the inter-generational tradition of Art Blakey and Betty Carter\, Ulysses introduces the new ensemble Generation Y\, building bridges to success and paying it forward by featuring a new crop of remarkable jazz talents that he’s discovered through his professorship at Juilliard and the other educational positions he holds internationally. With a repertoire that includes Mulgrew Miller\, Roy Hargrove\, George Cables\, Wayne Shorter\, and many others\, Generation Y dynamically affirms the power of the jazz tradition and shows us that the future of the music is in very good hands. \nFor this Vancouver show\, the maestro calls on “young lions” Benny Bennack III trumpet\, Erena Terakubo saxophone\, Tyler Bullock piano\, and Thomas Milovac bass. \nNo refunds.

SUMMARY:Lakecia Benjamin and Phoenix
DESCRIPTION:1218 Cartwright St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R8 \n“Benjamin exudes star-quality and authority in equal measure.” – textura \nNew York-based saxophonist\, arranger\, composer\, and bandleader Lakecia Benjamin is one of the most sought-after and respected players in jazz today. The Downbeat Critics Poll Rising Star Alto Saxophonist\, Jazz Journalists Association Up & Coming Artist of the Year\, and three-time Grammy nominee first attracted attention for her warm\, resonant tone and dynamic playing\, and she’s held it as a composer who uses traditional conceptions of jazz\, hip hop and soul as a jumping-off point for the formidable\, funk-inflected originals of her new album\, Phoenix. \nBenjamin honed her chops with Clark Terry and Terri Lyne Carrington\, and is a noted accompanist for vocalists like Gregory Porter and Theo Crocker. Along the way\, she’s worked with titans of contemporary jazz such as Robert Glasper\, Brandee Younger\, Jazzmeia Horn\, and Anita Baker\, and answered the bell for performances alongside Stevie Wonder\, Alicia Keys\, The Roots\, and many more.  \nHer three-time Grammy-nominated album\, Phoenix\, is a deeply personal outing for the charismatic composer. True to its name\, it’s a rebirth\, but it also keeps an important thread of intergenerational jazz legacy alive\, featuring guests that have inspired her musically and spiritually. Greats like Dianne Reeves\, Wayne Shorter\, Wallace Roney\, and Angela Davis lent their considerable talents to Lakecia’s recreation of herself from the ashes\, using her own melodic and assertive compositions as the vehicle.  \n“A crafty traditionalist who remains in step with the rhythms of the young generation” (The New Yorker)\, she’ll be joined by pianist Zaccai Curtis\, bassist Elias Bailey\, and drummer EJ Strickland. \nNo refunds.

SUMMARY:Konrad Agnas Rite of Passage
DESCRIPTION:1218 Cartwright St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R8 \nOne of Sweden’s most sought-after drummers\, Konrad Agnas makes his debut as composer/bandleader with Rite of Passage\, where he unites collaged hip-hop fantasias and Alice Coltrane-inspired spiritual jazz with rhythmic frameworks evoking the minimalism of Terry Riley and Moondog. Agnas’ compositions are equal parts precision and feel\, propelled by the granular\, multi-dimensional drumming style that he’s brought to work with Nadah El Shazly\, Bakgrundsmusik\, Johan Lindström Septett\, Rebecka Törnqvist\, Pat Metheny and Pugh Rogefeldt. Rite of Passage features some of the Scandinavian jazz scene’s finest creative players in Per Texas Johansson saxophone/clarinet/flute\, Torbjörn Zetterberg bass\, and Johan Graden piano/organ.

SUMMARY:aja monet
DESCRIPTION:1218 Cartwright St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R8 \nThe themes on surrealist blues poet aja monet’s 2024 debut album when the poems do what they do centre around Black resistance\, love\, and the inexhaustible quest for joy. The songs are insistent and unrelenting\, with some reminiscent of jazz club virtuosity and melee while others serve as a healing balm\, moving like a call to intercessory prayer. A 2024 Grammy nominee for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album\, aja is a conduit for her oratorical predecessors. At any given time you’ll find the revolutionary spirit of Audre Lorde and the Last Poets\, you’ll feel June Jordan\, Amiri Baraka\, Jayne Cortez\, and even the expressive ephemerality of a passing blue note. \nShe cut her teeth within the walls of the legendary Nuyorican Poets Café\, where in 2007\, at age 19\, she became the youngest Grand Slam Champion in the venue’s history. Since then\, her work has continuously found new depths and new resonances. aja monet is a griot\, a storyteller\, a chronicler\, and your grandmother telling you about her first love all at once. These aren’t poems for poets\, but poems for everyone. A woman of letters and storm\, aja monet’s poems do not roar in pentameter\, but rather in storm surge\, because “who’s got time for poems when the world is on fire?!?!”  \nShe’s joined by Ben Williams bass\, Logan Richardson sax\, Justin Brown drums\, and Javier Santiago keys. \nNo refunds.

SUMMARY:Kjetil Mulelid Trio
DESCRIPTION:1218 Cartwright St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R8 \n“The affable and sometimes extroverted music of Mulelid shatters the popular misconception that all contemporary Scandinavian piano trios are trapped in a glacial echo chamber” – Jazz Journal \nSince their 2017 debut on the prestigious Rune Grammofon label\, the Kjetil Mulelid Trio has distinguished itself as one of Norway’s leading piano trios. While they do travel quite comfortably in the calm yet constantly unfolding sound world that is distinctively Nordic\, Mulelid\, bassist Rune Nergaard and drummer Andreas Winther\, effortlessly conjure additional layers\, tones and textures that evoke Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans\, while veering off on surprising\, telepathically-linked group improvisations that call upon each player’s broad creative experience. \nCalled “magical” by The Wire\, Mulelid’s beguiling compositions expertly balance energetic\, rhythmically complex and harmonically rich music with refreshing\, evocative melodies.

SUMMARY:The Messthetics & James Brandon Lewis
DESCRIPTION:1218 Cartwright St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R8 \nOne of the most iconic rhythm sections in modern music\, drummer Brendan Canty and bassist Joe Lally were the insistent engine of DC post-hardcore legends Fugazi for over 15 years. In 2016\, they formed Messthetics with guitar virtuoso Anthony Pirog\, and released two albums of turbulent\, propulsive\, groove-laden instrumental art rock. Drawing on jazz\, punk\, dub\, and free improv\, they’re equally at home in an expansive take on Sonny Sharrock’s “Once Upon a Time” as they are in blazing\, math-metal riff barrages. \nIn late-2021\, they were joined onstage by acclaimed saxophonist James Brandon Lewis\, and sparks flew. Lally recalls a full-throttle passage when Lewis and Pirog began trading solos. As the intensity escalated\, the bassist felt simultaneously challenged and exhilarated. “You’re just holding on and going\, it sounds great\,” he remembers telling himself. “Just keep going!” Thankfully for fans of next-level\, genre-defying music\, they have. Called “one of the modern titans of the tenor” by All About Jazz\, the ecstatic fervour of James Brandon Lewis’ playing points back to John Coltrane\, Pharoah Sanders\, and the rich tradition of the Impulse! label–a tradition that the combustive quartet is now a part of with their eponymous 2024 release. For his part\, Lewis relishes the chance to plug into the power of the Messthetics’ punk-adjacent milieu\, calling their provocative real-time musical conversation a “high point of musical bonding and purely unapologetic energy! When you hear the Messthetics by themselves\, that shit is cranking. And I’m always signing up to crank.” \nNo refunds.

SUMMARY:Irreversible Entanglements
DESCRIPTION:1218 Cartwright St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R8 \nA free jazz quintet with an experimental punk mentality\, Irreversible Entanglements is “the most thrilling band in jazz right now” (NPR). Driven by poet/vocalist Camae Ayewa’s (aka Moor Mother) searing narrations of Black trauma\, survival\, and power\, Irreversible Entanglements brings first-wave free jazz’s tradition of resistance acutely into the now. This is deeply improvised rhythm music full of love\, protest\, and social commitment; IE are honouring the past\, speaking to the present\, and making sonic claims on the future. Featuring bassist Luke Stewart\, saxophonist Keir Neuringer\, trumpeter Aquiles Navarro\, and drummer Tcheser Holmes\, their new album Protect Your Light — on the legendary Impulse! Label — is “a major statement from artists who are as much the new wave of jazz as John Coltrane\, Albert Ayler\, Archie Shepp et al were in their day.” – The Wire \nIE came together spontaneously\, organically\, in April of 2015 at Musicians Against Police Brutality\, a day of protest sound and discussion in Brooklyn. All were artists and activists of varying degrees: Philadelphia-based Ayewa and Neuringer\, and D.C.-based Stewart as veterans of the Mid-Atlantic noise-hardcore-experimental scene\, while Holmes and Navarro as recent New England Conservatory grads. The studio albums that followed—2020’s Who Sent You? and 2021’s Open The Gates—developed this legend further. \nIn 2023\, IE signed to Impulse! Records and released its most accomplished work to date\, Protect Your Light\, primarily recorded at New Jersey’s historic Van Gelder Studios. It features eight examples of how IE’s collaborative composition strategies and Ayewa’s in-communion verses result in some of the most potent music being made in the now\, music with communal light and love at its heart.  \nNo refunds.

SUMMARY:Nduduzo Makhathini
DESCRIPTION:1218 Cartwright St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R8 \nPianist\, composer\, and improviser Nduduzo Makhathini is a central figure in South Africa’s vibrant jazz scene. His tenth album In the Spirit of Ntu is the inaugural release on the newly formed Blue Note Africa imprint\, and though it’s guided by cosmological and spiritual concepts\, “what you’ll feel most acutely isn’t incorporeal but deeply human\, a potent brew of fury\, joy\, and solidarity” (JazzTimes). A long-time collaborator with Shabaka Hutchings\, Makhathini has also worked with Wynton Marsalis\, Jaleel Shaw\, and scores of other greats\, carrying influences from John Coltrane and McCoy Tyner alongside the spirit of interconnectedness at the core of the ancient philosophy of Ntu. \nDrawing on the powerful echoes of pre-colonial Africa\, Nduduzo Makhathini’s ambitious music is an act of cultural reclamation and spiritual communion\, using remarkable technique in search of what he calls “that moment of revelation\, or in the African context\, a moment of divination.” With Francisco Mela drums and Swelakhe Duma Bell Le Pere bass.

SUMMARY:Isaiah Collier & The Chosen Few
DESCRIPTION:1218 Cartwright St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R8 \nWith The Chosen Few\, Chicago/Brooklyn-based saxophonist Isaiah Collier is consistently making some of modern music’s most ecstatic\, surging\, and transportive sonic statements. The quartet’s latest full-length Cosmic Transitions is outstanding spiritual free jazz that gets the synapses firing in the collective\, immortal brain that Roscoe Mitchell and Wayne Shorter tapped into\, that John Coltrane dreamed his visionary dreams with. Coltrane connections extend to the album’s sessions as well. Recorded on Coltrane’s birthday\, at the legendary Van Gelder studio\, using the same gear that captured A Love Supreme\, Collier and company channelled some heavy mystic energy into an instant classic of their own. As important as inspiration from the masters is\, Isaiah Collier & The Chosen Few “didn’t make the trip to kneel at the altar\, they came to take up the torch and start new fires” (Free Jazz Collective). \nThe Chosen Few features Clarence Davis trumpet\, Michael Shekwoaga Ode drums\, Jeremiah Hunt bass\, Davis Whitfield piano.

SUMMARY:Chris Gestrin Trio
DESCRIPTION:1218 Cartwright St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R8 \nVancouver-based pianist/composer/producer Chris Gestrin is unquestionably one of this country’s premier jazz talents. His trio with bassist André Lachance and drummer Dylan van der Schyff formed in 1997\, and have since developed an almost telepathic group voice\, swinging hard whether they’re playing straight-ahead jazz or venturing into the thrilling unknowns of free improv.

SUMMARY:Pura Fé & Jesse Zubot: Chamber of Bones
DESCRIPTION:1218 Cartwright St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R8 \nIn 2022\, Jesse Zubot and co-composer Wayne Lavallee invited the acclaimed singer-songwriter Pura Fé to contribute vocals to their score for Bones of Crows\, directed by Marie Clements. Interacting with the chamber ensemble that Zubot conducted in real time\, Fé completely inhabited the music’s tense atmospherics and sweeping emotional range; most of her improvisations were one-take magic. Zubot and Fé return to this sonic landscape for the challenging\, spirit-animating collaboration Chamber of Bones. \nPura Fé is an artist\, activist\, and storyteller of Tuscarora and Taino heritage\, known for her impassioned vocals\, slide guitar fireworks\, and powerful songs that touch on folk\, gospel\, and blues traditions. In 1987\, she co-founded the renowned Indigenous women’s a cappella group Ulali\, and since 1995 she’s been releasing solo albums and collaborating with the likes of Indigo Girls and Robbie Robertson. \nWith multiple JUNOs\, WCMAs\, and National Jazz Awards on the mantle\, Jesse Zubot is known for virtuosic violin playing\, cutting edge production style\, and collaborations with avant-innovators like Evan Parker and Joe Fonda\, indie artists Dan Mangan and Stars\, and the incomparable Tanya Tagaq. In recent years\, he’s created enveloping scores for films like Indian Horse and Monkey Beach. \nPura Fé will play solo\, followed by this exceptional musical connection with conductor/performer Jesse and an ensemble featuring Josh Zubot violin/viola\, Trent Freeman violin\, Wesley Hardisty five-string violin\, Meredith Bates violin/viola\, Marina Hasselberg cello\, and Peggy Lee cello. \nPresented in association with Talking Stick Festival

SUMMARY:Brandee Younger Trio
DESCRIPTION:1218 Cartwright St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R8 \n“Younger’s playing\, virtuosic but with a sparkling lightness\, invites you to set aside questions of classification\, and just savour the sonic finery” — Rolling Stone \nThe classically trained\, genre-unconstrained harpist Brandee Younger recently made history at the 2022 GRAMMY Awards as the first Black female solo artist nominated for Best Instrumental Composition for the mesmerizing Beautiful Is Black. Over her far-ranging career\, Younger has performed and recorded across with artists like John Legend\, The Roots\, Lauryn Hill\, Pharoah Sanders\, Ravi Coltrane\, Ron Carter\, and Charlie Haden. A leading light in modern jazz\, The New York Times raves that “no harpist has been more capable of combining all of the modern harp traditions—from Salzedo\, through Dorothy Ashby\, through Alice Coltrane—with such strength\, grace and commitment.” \nHer trio features Rashaan Carter (Wallace Roney\, Cindy Blackman) bass and Allan Mednard (Kurt Rosenwinkel\, Jeremy Pelt) drums.
