DESCRIPTION:Singer-songwriter\, producer and multi-instrumentalist Haleluya Hailu has quickly become a staple of the Vancouver scene. Shortly after releasing her debut EP\, she was signed to 604 Records\, who released her 2024 EP eternally\, yours\, and the 2025 single\, Ginny. That same year\, she opened for Macy Gray and won the Black Canadian Music Award. \nOne of Vancouver’s most esteemed multi-instrumentalists\, Feven Kidane’s practice venn-diagrams self-knowing\, immersion\, and futurism\, entrenched in Blackness. Feven has brought her original works and accompaniment skills to stages far and wide\, including the 2025 JUNOs (Snotty Nose Rez Kids\, Tia Wood)\, Ethiopia’s legendary African Jazz Village (Girma Beyene\, Mulatu Astatke)\, and on tour with Digable Planets. \nDrawing from their Ethiopian heritage\, Hailu and Kidane team up for a night of shared cultural expression that highlights canonical works from the Ethiopian Golden Age of music\, through to the popular music of the 1980s and ’90s. DESCRIPTION:MA:Q \nFormerly known as the Mary Ancheta Quartet\, the newly renamed MA:Q (pronounced M-A-Q) pushes the boundaries of genre\, drawing inspiration from Weather Report\, Betty Davis\, McCoy Tyner\, and David Byrne to create a “crisp\, fresh\, funky fusion\, landing somewhere between vintage Headhunters and swinging organist Jimmy Smith” (Vancouver Sun). A Vancouver-based Canadian Filipina\, Ancheta’s forthcoming MA:Q album When the Light Comes to Play deals with themes of resilience\, moments of clarity\, and the transitional state between waking and sleeping. The LP incorporates more piano than her Level Up EP\, as MA:Q moves toward modern jazz with dynamic elements of funk\, hip-hop\, and Afrobeat. \nWith Dominic Conway sax\, Matt Reid bass\, and Paul Clark drums\, MA:Q come to play\, and come correct\, with their groove-driven\, future-facing “supercharged jazz and funk” (Georgia Straight). \nSharon Minemoto Quartet \nFollowing the 1941 bombing of Pearl Harbour\, nearly 22\,000 Japanese Canadians were stripped of their civil rights and forced to leave their homes. Sharon’s paternal grandmother took her children to Japan\, and the family was stranded near Hiroshima when the US atomic bomb was dropped. With his family stuck in Japan\, Minemoto’s grandfather died in an internment camp in Moose Jaw. After the war\, Japanese Canadians were forbidden to return to the West Coast. Their choice: move east of the Rockies or “Repatriate” to Japan. Sharon’s maternal grandparents took their Canadian-born children to Japan\, where they faced years of discrimination before returning to Canada. \nWith the support of the Japanese Canadian Legacies Society\, pianist Sharon Minemoto composed nine works that reflect on her family’s experience during WWII. A fixture on the Vancouver contemporary jazz scene\, Minemoto is known for her “tasteful and engaging work at the keyboard\, which is never short of inventive” (All About Jazz) and her tight-knit quartet with Jon Bentley tenor saxophone\, Bernie Arai drums\, and Darren Radtke bass. \nThis is an accessible venue. DESCRIPTION:Canadian saxophonist and composer Christine Jensen has lent a distinct voice to the creative jazz scene of the past twenty-five years. Her jazz orchestra recordings Treelines and Habitat were JUNO Award-winners for Jazz Album of the Year (group) in 2011 and 2014\, respectively\, while her third jazz orchestra album Harbour (Justin-Time Records) is nominated in this year’s signature celebration of Canadian talent. \nQuite a regular at the JUNOs\, her dynamic and expressive Quartet album Day Moon won for Jazz Album of the Year (solo) in 2024. Inspired by seeing a full moon as the sun was rising during the global pandemic\, it’s an apt image for a suite of music that taps into deep reservoirs of emotion while keeping “enough uplift and whimsy in the playing to remedy any unsought melancholy. The welcome catharsis in Jensen’s vision expands both ways” (Downbeat). \nJensen is constantly in motion as an improviser\, composer and bandleader. DESCRIPTION:Nubya Garcia isn’t an artist you can easily classify. Is it jazz? Sure\, the London-born saxophonist\, composer and bandleader grew up studying the genre under noted pianist Nikki Yeoh at Camden Music. But it isn’t until you listen to albums like 2020’s Source and 2024’s Odyssey that you hear broader creativity shining through: it’s jazz\, classical\, dub\, R&B\, and whatever else Garcia wants to convey. It all comes from a place of exploration and self-study\, of wanting to do all the things across all disciplines while ignoring arbitrary boxes that don’t fit. \nGarcia’s 2024 sophomore album Odyssey (Concord Jazz) is a majestic feat on which she blends orchestral arrangements with R&B\, jazz\, broken beat\, and dub\, resulting in a grand\, nuanced record that feels airy and celestial without sacrificing the groove. It’s a deeply personal offering about her trek to falling back in love with musical composition over the past four years. \nHer 2020 debut album Source was released via Concord Jazz to massive critical acclaim\, an NPR Tiny Desk Concert\, a Pitchfork “Best New Music” review and a Rolling Stone “Album of the Month” mention. The New York Times called it “a sweeping set of jazz with Afro-Caribbean influences that funnels a life’s worth of experiences into an hourlong listen.” The album entered the UK charts in the Top 30\, and Garcia was one of just three artists selected to perform live at Glastonbury’s 2020 Experience\, which aired on the BBC to thousands of viewers. DESCRIPTION:One of the finest trumpeters in jazz today\, Marquis Hill is a composer and bandleader whose “pan-musical vision recognizes all Black music—jazz\, R&B\, hip-hop\, etc.—as one long continuum” (The Big Takeover). \nBorn and raised on Chicago’s South Side\, Hill absorbed the jazz tradition formally and from gigs and jam sessions with elders. By the time he won the 2014 Thelonious Monk competition\, his reputation for fluid virtuosity had been firmly established as a member of the Chicago Jazz Orchestra\, an in-demand sideman\, and a leader with several buzzworthy albums to his credit. Since then\, he’s received glowing critical acclaim\, topped the DownBeat “Rising Star–Trumpet” Critics Poll\, toured nonstop with his group Blacktet\, and worked with a jazz who’s-who that includes Marcus Miller\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Kurt Elling\, Joe Lovano\, and Makaya McCraven. \n“Composers Collective: Beyond the Jukebox” celebrates the compositions of friends\, colleagues\, and heroes invited to compose a piece with Marquis specifically in mind. “I was thinking about the tradition in jazz where Dexter Gordon would record a Lee Morgan composition\, or Freddie Hubbard would record a Wayne Shorter composition\,” muses Hill. “I started to wonder\, ‘When did we stop doing that\, playing each other’s music?’ In addition to Hill’s soulful\, eclectic modern jazz compositions\, the new album includes pieces by Ernest Dawkins\, Jeff Parker\, Marcus Strickland\, SABA\, and Joel Ross\, plus guest appearances by Gerald Clayton\, Makaya McCraven\, Caroline Davis\, and more. \nJoining Hill for this year’s Vancouver International Jazz Festival performance are pianist Michael King and drummer Corey Fonville\, who both contributed pieces to the album\, as well as bassist Micah Collier\, a rising star in the Chicago scene. \nThis is an accessible venue. Vancouver jazz lovers and hip hop heads will giddily unite when the quartet kicks into “MF DOOM SUiTE”\, their harmonically imaginative\, coolly grooving tribute to the late metalfaced rap icon. \nEach NJU member is a prodigious artist in their own right. Bassist/composer Sebastian Rios is a 2024 Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award winner and a long-time student of bass legend Ron Carter. Rios and drummer TJ Reddick have been sidemen for the likes of Jon Batiste\, Sullivan Fortner\, Emmet Cohen\, and ELEW. Winner of the 2023 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition\, Noah Halpern has been a creative force on the New York jazz scene with his own quartet and work with Wynton Marsalis\, Jason Moran\, KNOWER\, Ulysses Owens\, Lalah Hathaway\, and many more. A Juilliard alumn and now faculty member\, pianist Isaiah J. Up to 21 talented teens are selected from an audition process open to students in Grades 8-12 from over 150 schools across the Lower Mainland. Successful participants will have the opportunity to cultivate their talents and networks through mentorship by a professional band director and members of the Vancouver Jazz Orchestra over four weeks of rehearsals in June. The intensive culminates with a live performance on the closing day of the 2024 Vancouver international Jazz Festival.

At any given time you’ll find the revolutionary spirit of Audre Lorde and the Last Poets\, you’ll feel June Jordan\, Amiri Baraka\, Jayne Cortez\, and even the expressive ephemerality of a passing blue note. \nShe cut her teeth within the walls of the legendary Nuyorican Poets Café\, where in 2007\, at age 19\, she became the youngest Grand Slam Champion in the venue’s history. Since then\, her work has continuously found new depths and new resonances. aja monet is a griot\, a storyteller\, a chronicler\, and your grandmother telling you about her first love all at once. These aren’t poems for poets\, but poems for everyone.
