SUMMARY:Vancouver Jazz Orchestra Plays Dave Robbins Happy Faces
DESCRIPTION:Under the direction of saxophonist/clarinetist James Danderfer\, the Vancouver Jazz Orchestra (VJO) features an array of the city’s finest jazz artists. The VJO is dedicated to the presentation of classic big band music as well as a focus on Vancouver composers\, past and present. Recent performances have featured international artists such as Jeremy Pelt and Seamus Blake and 2025 promises to be the VJO’s biggest year yet\, starting off with this unique presentation. \nThis evening will highlight a seminal figure in the legacy of large ensemble jazz in Vancouver\, in Canada\, and beyond: Dave Robbins. As a trombonist\, bandleader\, arranger\, composer\, and teacher\, Robbins made invaluable contributions to the fine art of big band and jazz orchestra performance. Shockingly\, no recordings of large ensembles led by Robbins have been available for years; instead\, studio and live recordings were passed privately between enthusiasts. That was the case until now\, with the release of the album Happy Faces on Reel to Real Recordings. Join the VJO as they celebrate! \nWith Michael Kim\, Brad Turner\, Thomas Marriott\, Brian Harding\, Ellen Marple\, Dawn Haylett\, James Danderfer\, Mike Braverman\, Mia Gazley\, Sharon Minemoto\, André Lachance\, & Dave Robbins.

SUMMARY:Bruno Hubert Trio CD Release
DESCRIPTION:Bruno Hubert is one of Canada’s most lyrical and expressive Jazz pianists\, with a deep sense of swing\, lush harmonies\, and beguiling melodic lines. His conception\, while highly original and utterly genuine\, is evocative of\, at once\, Erroll Garner\, Keith Jarrett\, Herbie Hancock\, Bill Evans and other luminaries of jazz. While he is careful to stress that he is not a composer\, he nevertheless presents a cornucopia of medley-like arrangements of jazz standards\, soul\, rock and pop influenced pieces\, often in a lively night club environment. Hubert has been quietly underpinning the Vancouver jazz scene for over twenty years now and while he has a number of recordings under his own name\, he is also a key associate of other top jazz musicians such as Juno Award winner Brad Turner (trumpet)\, Juno nominated vocalists Jaclyn Guillou and Denzal Sinclaire\, Seamus Blake and others. Earlier in his career he collaborated with such musical luminaries as Gino Vannelli\, and Norah Jones. Bruno will be celebrating the release of his newly recorded album\, his 3rd for Cellar Music and his first since 2008. \nWith André Lachance bass and Joe Poole drums.

SUMMARY:Aquiles Navarro & Tcheser Holmes
DESCRIPTION:Afro-Caribbean improvisational trumpet-and-percussion duo Aquiles Navarro and Tcheser Holmes\, are longtime friends\, collaborators\, devotees of New York City’s creative music scenes\, and members of celebrated free jazz collective Irreversible Entanglements. In September of 2014\, Navarro and Holmes self released an album of improvisations that they’d recorded in Panama earlier that summer. The following spring\, they were invited to perform at The Silent Barn in Brooklyn\, an event organized by Musicians Against Police Brutality as a benefit for the family of Akai Gurley (a Black man who was killed by a NYPD officer). The duo took the stage immediately before a formalizing performance by Camae Ayewa (aka Moor Mother)\, Keir Neuringer and Luke Stewart\, a trio that would soon adopt the name Irreversible Entanglements\, as well as Navarro and Holmes themselves. \nIn the Fall of 2019\, Navarro and Holmes went into the studio again\, booking two after-hours sessions at Brooklyn’s S1 Studios. The resulting album – Heritage of the Invisible II – reveals Navarro and Holmes stepping firmly into the limelight of progressive music-making. \nAquiles Navarro on trumpet & Tcheser Holmes on drums.

The music moves us in the way a preacher moves their congregation. We get up off our feet and hold on to the words and what they stir in us. We are transported to the absolute truth of the moment where we can join in the experience together. This is what the world needs right now\, and it is what I want…” \nWith Chris Gestrin hammond organ\, Alvin Brendan guitar\, and Jesse Cahill drums.

SUMMARY:Jesse Cahill Trio
DESCRIPTION:The Infidels presents Frankie’s After Dark. \nThe Jesse Cahill Trio presents the organ group not simply as a momentary phenomena or musical novelty of the past but as an updated vehicle for contemporary musical expression. For this performance the groups explorations will include music from George Dunning\, Dimitri Tiomkin\, Ferde Grofe\, Neil Young\, and perhaps others. For this Frankie’s After Dark performance the trio features Chris Gestrin on organ\, David Sikula on guitar\, and Jesse Cahill on drums.

SUMMARY:FROM NEW YORK: LEZLIE HARRISON
DESCRIPTION:Lezlie Harrison is her own personal renaissance. Her constant state of evolution and growth brings with it\, gifts for those paying attention. As a vocalist both bold and subtle\, her vulnerability attends to the fragile matters of our collective human affairs while her optimistic momentum inspires us to rise above any tribulation to rejoice. Be it Jazz\, Blues\, Gospel\, Soul\, The American Song Form\, original compositions\, or any song in ANY form\, Ms. Harrison will imbue it with her distinctive stamp and make a very personal delivery. \nIn 2023 Harrison recorded Let Them Talk for Vancouver’s Cellar Music Group. “The songs I selected for this album share a message of bringing us together in our collective human experience.

SUMMARY:Cory Weeds Quintet featuring Atley King & David Hazeltine
DESCRIPTION:Alto saxophonist Cory Weeds teams up with frequent collaborator\, New York City pianist David Hazeltine for a night of hard swinging thoughtful jazz. David Hazeltine is one of a handful of contemporary pianists who has mastered all of the major musical skills\, from improvisation and technique\, to accompaniment\, arranging\, and composition. Even more impressive\, David is the rare artist able to innovate in each category. Thus it’s no surprise that he’s the most recorded contemporary jazz pianist of our time\, having recorded thirty five cd’s as a leader and hundreds more as a sideman\, on various major labels globally. Joining the band will be young vibraphone phemom Atley King who has been in New York studying with Hazeltine at the Tribeca School For the Arts With Ken Lister bass and Jesse Cahill drums.
