SUMMARY:Étran de L'Aïr
DESCRIPTION:Étran de L’Aïr (or “stars of the Aïr region”) have been stars of the wedding circuit around Agadez\, Niger\, since forming in 1995\, when current band leader Moussa “Abindi” Ibra was only nine years old. Beloved for their hypnotic solos\, propulsive rhythms\, and sun-glazed melodies\, Étran celebrates the sounds of the “capital city of Saharan rock” with the dynamism and joy of a hometown wedding. \nFrom the days of the Trans-Saharan caravan in the 14th century\, to becoming a modern-day stopover for Europe-bound migrants\, Agadez has been a crossroads city where people and ideas come together. Understandably\, it’s here where one of the most ambitious Tuareg styles has taken hold\, as exemplified by Étran’s frenetic electric guitar solos\, driving drum-kit\, and flamboyant dancing guitarists. \nWhile other Tuareg guitarists look to Western rock\, Étran de L’Aïr explores a pan-African style that cites a myriad of cultural influences\, from Northern Malian blues\, Hausa bar bands\, to Congolese Soukous\, while always being rooted in the celebratory exuberance of an Agadez wedding. This is music for dancing\, after all! \nPresented in association with Festival d’été francophone de Vancouver.

DESCRIPTION:A cutting-edge drummer\, composer\, producer\, and sonic collagist\, Makaya McCraven is a multitalented force whose inventive process and intuitive\, cinematic style defies categorization. Blurring the boundaries of jazz and electronic music\, his “hypnotic\, wholly new and radically communal” (Pitchfork) 2018 album Universal Beings—featuring Shabaka Hutchings\, Tomeka Reid\, Jeff Parker\, and other greats—made ‘Best-of’ lists in the New York Times\, Billboard\, NPR\, The Guardian\, and Pitchfork. 2021’s Deciphering the Message saw him sampling and engaging with the venerable Blue Note Records catalogue. His newest album\, In These Times\, is the triumphant result of a project more than seven years in the making—the album he’s been trying to make since he started making records. \nA collection of polytemporal compositions inspired as much by broader cultural struggles as it is by McCraven’s personal experience as a product of a multinational\, working class Chicago musician community\, In These Times encompasses all he’s lived through\, while also pushing the music forward. Known as the leader of the prolific and constantly surprising Claudia Quintet\, drummer/composer/bandleader John Hollenbeck formed GEORGE remotely during the pandemic. The group finally met in Montréal to record 2023’s Letters to George\, followed that summer by shorts\, four re-composed remixes based on improvisations from their initial remote recording session. With Anna Webber tenor sax/flute\, Sarah Rossy voice/keyboards\, and Chiquita Magic keyboards/voice alongside Hollenbeck\, GEORGE’s sound is firmly planted outside any categories or labels\, but “magic happens in the margins and the middle\, between analog and digital textures\, genre detours and a collective will which is dogmatically subject to change” (DownBeat).

Even during the moments of dissonance\, there’s a peaceful flow that borders on enchantment” (Bandcamp Daily). \nFormed in 1998\, this melody-driven ensemble is cellist Peggy Lee’s vehicle for exploring improvisation within composition while spotlighting the idiosyncratic\, brilliant individual voices that make up the group. Peggy wanted to bring together some of her favourite players who\, at the time\, hadn’t played a lot with each other. Over the years\, with six records released\, the individual voices have remained vivid and compelling while the overall ensemble sound has developed into its own rich entity. The GRAMMY-nominated emcee\, singer\, producer and drummer melds avant-garde experimentation with hip-hop production techniques to tilt the nexus of jazz and rap in unmapped directions. Since his 2019 debut\, Overall has established himself as a rhythmic innovator and a visionary poet who addresses the injustices of the carceral system\, the pharmaceutical industry\, and anti-black racism\, while wrangling with the perils of his own mental illness. On ANIMALS\, his 2024 album on Warp Records\, Kassa pushes his kaleidoscopic\, subversive vision further\, layering Roland 808s against avant-garde drumming—in the vein of his mentors Elvin Jones and Billy Hart—alongside all-star collaborators like Danny Brown\, Lil B\, Nick Hakim\, Laura Mvula\, Vijay Iyer\, and Shabazz Palaces. ANIMALS pushes Kassa’s lyrical message further\, too.
