SUMMARY:Ryan Oliver plays Dexter Gordon's A Swingin' Affair
DESCRIPTION:Blue Note is unquestionably the most iconic jazz label there has ever been–maybe the most iconic record label of all time. The label’s first press release (1939) states\, “Blue Note records are concerned with identifying its impulse\, not its sensational and commercial adornments.” A pioneer in jazz’s golden age\, Blue Note served as a breeding ground for legends such as Sidney Bechet\, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers\, Kenny Burrell\, Miles Davis\, Thelonious Monk\, Bud Powell\, Sonny Rollins and Horace Silver. Now approaching its 80th year\, Blue Note remains a powerful and mighty force in the jazz world. \nJoin saxophonist Ryan Oliver as he plays music from on of his favorite Blue Note releases: Dexter Gordon – A Swingin’ Affair\nWith Nick Peck piano\, Russ Botten bass and Joe Poole drums.

SUMMARY:Ches Smith\, Mat Maneri\, Craig Taborn
DESCRIPTION:“His [Smith’s] first album as a composer and bandleader on the iconic ECM label burns with a subtle heat.” —Pitchfork \nThis exciting trio returns to Vancouver with three of the most notable musicians in New York’s vibrant creative music scene—drummer Ches Smith (John Zorn\, Tim Berne\, Marc Ribot)\, pianist Craig Taborn (Chris Potter\, Dave Douglas\, Wadada Leo Smith)\, and violist Mat Maneri (Marilyn Crispell\, Paul Motian). \nOriginally formed as a one-off impromptu session\, this exceptional trio combines spare compositions by Smith augmented with plenty of space for white-hot improvisation. The group’s 2016 debut release on ECM\, The Bell\, revelled in the contrast between furious grooves and subtle stillness; dramatic tension and quiet mystery.

SUMMARY:Kandace Springs
DESCRIPTION:“Well\, here’s a lady in serious demand.”—London Jazz News \nSince making her sold-out TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival debut at Pyatt Hall in 2017\, Nashville native Kandace Springs has made a lot of friends with her engaging talent. \nAs The Guardian said in a four-star review\, “she has a rare ability that can’t be taught—to sound like an old soul\, just doing what comes naturally.” The singer/songwriter/pianist makes warm and sophisticated soul\, pop\, and jazz with a stunning voice and original material that she showcased on her debut recording\, Soul Eyes (Blue Note). This spring\, she released her EP Black Orchid. Taking inspiration from the likes of Nina Simone\, Billie Holiday\, and Lauryn Hill\, the organic\, intimate\, and deeply soulful sound of this “suave songstress” (Wall Street Journal) is remarkably fresh but universally appealing. \nShe’s just coming off a 35-date tour with Hall and Oates\, so don’t miss her in this intimate venue—her star is on the rise.
