SUMMARY:Caroline Davis' Alula ft. Chris Tordini and Kate Gentile
DESCRIPTION:1601 Johnston St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R9 \nInitial inspiration for Caroline Davis’ “most formally innovative group yet” (New York Times) sprang from the pages of The Sibley Guide to Birds\, specifically the hidden part of a wing that appears like magic during take-off and landing. The Brooklyn-based saxophonist/vocalist’s complex\, beautiful balance of improv and composed material reveals and occludes\, taking unexpected flight paths to wherever Davis points her remarkable imagination. A Downbeat Rising Star winner who’s worked with Marquis Hill\, Lee Konitz\, Angelica Sanchez\, and Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier\, Caroline Davis’ Alula features Chris Tordini (Tyshawn Sorey\, John Hollenbeck) bass and Kate Gentile (Ava Mendoza\, Matt Mitchell) drums. \nThis show is part of our Granville Island Jazz series

SUMMARY:Davis / Lee / Babin / van der Schyff
DESCRIPTION:1601 Johnston St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R9 \nThe New York Times praised Caroline Davis’ “talent for deriving long\, dizzying motifs from smaller melodic cells.” The innovative Brooklyn-based saxophonist/vocalist joins three of the West Coast’s most empathic players for a late night of boundless improv. “One of the world’s most accomplished practitioners of improvisational cello” (Musicworks)\, Peggy Lee exudes mastery in both quietude and riot. With almost 200 recordings to his credit\, Dylan van der Schyff (Achim Kaufmann\, Ken Vandermark) is a drummer of incomparable vision and sensitivity\, while bassist Tommy Babin (Haram) plays with a fiery thrill of discovery usually associated with mad scientists. \nThis show is part of our Granville Island Jazz series

SUMMARY:Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis
DESCRIPTION:Featuring 15 of the world’s finest players\, the remarkably versatile Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) has been performing\, educating\, and proudly flying the flag for jazz traditions across the globe and at their Lincoln Center home base – aka the House of Swing – since 1988. Under Music Director Wynton Marsalis\, they animate a vast repertoire\, from historic compositions by Ellington\, Monk\, Mingus\, and Mary Lou Williams\, to Jazz at Lincoln Center-commissioned works from current and former JLCO members like Marsalis\, Ted Nash\, Victor Goines\, Sherman Irby\, Chris Crenshaw\, and Carlos Henriquez. Expect an all-Wynton program this evening as the JLCO pays tribute to a living legend. \nCalled “the modern day Duke Ellington\, Glenn Miller and Gerry Mulligan all in one” by All About Jazz\, trumpeter/composer/bandleader Wynton Marsalis is an iconic jazz master. Born into the famed New Orleans musical family\, he was playing in the Fairview Baptist Church Band at 8 years old\, and the New Orleans Philharmonic by 12. He moved to New York in ‘79\, fresh out of high school\, and quickly traded his Julliard plans for a spot in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. At 19\, Wynton hit the road with his own band and has been touring the world ever since\, picking up nine GRAMMY Awards\, a Pulitzer Prize\, and a boatload of acclaim along the way. He eventually did find his way back to Julliard—as the prestigious school’s Founding Director of Jazz Studies. Wynton Marsalis sees jazz as a way of life\, a model of democratic action\, and “a prism through which American culture can be understood” (New York Times). Through his compositions\, virtuosic playing\, and tireless work as Music Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra\, Marsalis promotes individual creativity (improvisation)\, collective cooperation (swing)\, and gratitude (sophistication)\, while facing adversity with persistent optimism (the blues). \nWYNTON MARSALIS\, Music Director\, Trumpet\nRYAN KISOR\, Trumpet\nKENNY RAMPTON\, Trumpet\nMARCUS PRINTUP\, Trumpet\nVINCENT GARDNER\, Trombone\nCHRIS CRENSHAW\, Trombone\, The Golkin Family Chair\nELLIOT MASON\, Trombone\nSHERMAN IRBY\, Alto and Soprano Saxophones\, Flute\, Clarinet\nALEXA TARANTINO\, Alto and Soprano Saxophones\, Flute\, Clarinet\nCHRIS LEWIS\, Tenor and Soprano Saxophones\, Clarinet\, Bass Clarinet\nABDIAS ARMENTEROS\, Tenor and Soprano Saxophones\, Clarinet\nPAUL NEDZELA\, Baritone and Soprano Saxophones\, Clarinet\, Bass Clarinet\nDAN NIMMER\, Piano\, The Zou Family Chair\nCARLOS HENRIQUEZ\, Bass\, The Mandel Family Chair in honor of Kathleen B. SUMMARY:IronFest IV: Beatings Are In The Body
DESCRIPTION:Beatings Are In The Body is a powerful and enigmatic project from three of Canada’s leading figures in experimental music — Vancouver-based pianist/composer/improviser Róisin Adams (of Hildegard’s Ghost)\, Montréal-based experimental vocalist/composer Erika Angell (of Thus Owls)\, and fellow Vancouverite Peggy Lee — renowned cellist/composer/improviser. As their name indicates there’s a raw\, volatile dimension to the music they create\, “it’s an investigation of how memories\, pain\, and a spectrum of emotions are stored in and continue to be carried by our physical bodies.” Their unflinching\, self-titled debut full-length album resides in the dark fissures between adventurous acoustic songcraft\, poetry\, and the outright abstraction of free improv. \nPresented in collaboration with Heart of the City Festival.

SUMMARY:IronFest IV: Oceans And: Tim Berne\, Aurora Nealand & Hank Roberts
DESCRIPTION:Tim Berne’s work is characterized by tireless artistic dedication and creativity. His newly formed trio with accordionist/multi-instrumentalist Aurora Nealand and cellist Hank Roberts takes the listener on a sonically adventurous journey on Oceans And\, and delights with much imagination and amazing musical diversity. “The breathtaking music\, created by Tim Berne\, Aurora Nealand\, and Hank Roberts can be deservedly and on all accounts deemed: profound\, probing\, intriguing\, distinct\, intricate\, raw\, courageous\, mysterious\, and thoughtful. An honest crusade of in-depth imagination\, this music is a beacon of light in an unsettling world. It stimulates the brain\, animates the imagination\, and charms the heart.” (Baikida Carroll) With Tim Berne alto sax\, Aurora Nealand sax/accordion and Hank Roberts cello. \nPresented in collaboration with Heart of the City Festival.

SUMMARY:IronFest IV: Josh Cole's Kind Mind
DESCRIPTION:Josh Cole’s Kind Mind is an electro-acoustic chamber ensemble based in Toronto featuring three of Canada’s premiere improvising musicians – Karen Ng alto saxophone/clarinet/synth\, Michael Davidson vibraphone/marimba/pedals and Josh Cole double bass/pedals/synth/sampler. Rooted in an approach to improvisation that has been brewing in the Toronto creative music hub “The Tranzac” for decades\, the trio explores a fractured\, sparse\, and timbral approach reinforced by brief compositions and a long history of collective music making. “I like the trio’s unique musical vision\, its tender and determined sound and the way it is delivered: with quality and precision. To create your own voice in the crowded musical environment of today is a feat.” (freejazzblog) \nPresented in collaboration with Heart of the City Festival with support from Canada Council.

SUMMARY:IronFest IV: Craig Taborn
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn-based Craig Taborn has been performing piano and electronic music in the jazz\, improvisational\, and creative music scene for over twenty five years. He has experience composing for and performing in a wide variety of situations including jazz\, new music\, electronic\, rock\, noise and avant garde contexts. The New York Times Magazine calls Taborn “One of the best jazz pianists alive.” \nCraig Taborn’s 2021 live album Avenging Angel was widely praised for the fresh ideas it brought to the solo piano idiom. The Guardian saluted Craig’s “genius (there is no other word for it)” and his “world of whispered\, wide-spaced figures\, ringing overtones\, evaporating echoes and glowering contrapuntal cascades.” Over the last decade Taborn has continued to refine and develop his approach\, reaching new high ground with Shadow Plays\, a stunning live recital from Vienna’s Konzerthaus. In this fully improvised concert\, recorded in March 2020\, Craig explores sounds and silences\, swirling colours\, densities and forms\, creating new music in the moment with both poetic imagination and an iron grip on his spontaneously generated material. \nPresented in collaboration with Heart of the City Festival.

SUMMARY:Unwritten Thursdays: Chris Corsano & Elisa Thorne + Cat Toren\, James Meger & Liam Murphy
DESCRIPTION:MONTHLY SERIES AT TYRANT STUDIOS (1019 Seymour St. *upstairs*) \nPresented in collaboration by Barking Sphinx Performing Society and Coastal Jazz \n9pm doors\n9:30pm music\n$15-20 \n(Tickets are not available for purchase until January 18th) \n1st set: CHRIS CORSANO & ELISA THORNE \n2nd set: CAT TOREN\, JAMES MEGER & LIAM MURPHY \nChris Corsano is a New York-based drummer who has been working at the intersections of free jazz\, avant-rock\, and experimental music since the late ’90s. He’s a rim-batterer of choice for some of the greatest contemporary purveyors of “jazz” (Joe McPhee\, Mette Rasmussen\, Zoh Amba) and “rock” (Sir Richard Bishop\, Bill Orcutt\, Jim O’Rourke)\, as well as artists beyond categorization (Björk for her Volta album and world tour\, Michael Flower\, Okkyung Lee). Appearing on over 180 albums and touring in an ultra-wide array of collaborations\, he’s a renowned solo performer in his own right\, with a record due out later this year on the Drag City label. He’s built a highly inventive musical language through ecstatic free improvisation\, extended percussion techniques\, and the augmentation of his kit with circular-breathed reeds and bowed strings that coax new resonances out of the drums’ heads. Corsano’s been called “one of the world’s great drummers” by The Guardian\, an “ace of the avant-garde” by The New York Times\, a “powerhouse drummer” by Rolling Stone\, and “arguably the most riotously energetic and creative drummer in contemporary free jazz” by Wire Magazine. Spin ranked him as one of the “100 Greatest Drummers of Alternative Music\,” and in 2017\, he received the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award. \nArts & design: Leisure Thief

SUMMARY:Myriam Gendron + Jim White & Marisa Anderson
DESCRIPTION:Myriam Gendron\nPrior to her debut album\, Myriam Gendron’s primary musical focus was busking in Paris Metro stations\, performing the songs of Leonard Cohen and others\, accompanying herself on guitar. Her critically acclaimed albums\, Not So Deep As A Well (2014) and Ma délire – Songs of love\, lost & found (2021) have explored a vast geography of inspiration\, from the poems of American writer Dorothy Parker to the complex folk traditions of Quebec and beyond. \nThe Montreal-based artist’s third LP\, Mayday\, is an even more syncretic fusion of the elements she uses to create her sound. Most of the songs are original\, sung in both English and French\, and they blend traditional and avant elements with abandon. Myriam is often accompanied on this album by Marisa Anderson guitar and Jim White (Dirty Three) drums\, whose work provides a quietly aggressive sort of free-rock base. \n  \n\n  \nJim White & Marisa Anderson\nJim White and Marisa Anderson share an abounding appetite for musical exploration. White\, as a member of Venom P Stinger\, Dirty Three\, and Xylouris White\, is well-known for his creative and idiosyncratic drumming. His singular abilities have also led to collaborations with Cat Power\, PJ Harvey\, and Bill Callahan among others. Anderson’s prolific output as a solo performer\, her mastery of traditional folk and blues forms and her abilities to make them entirely her own has established her as one of the most exciting and forward-thinking guitarists of the last decade. White and Anderson’s considerable technical skills are used in the most inventive and unconventional manner on their debut duo recording\, The Quickening. \nCo-presented by Coastal Jazz and the Vancouver Folk Music Festival. \nThis show is 19+. SUMMARY:SUMAC with Moor Mother
DESCRIPTION:147 E Pender St\, Vancouver\, BC V6A 1T5 \nSUMAC \nIn a time of significant social upheaval\, SUMAC pushes further into the extreme polarity of their expressionistic metal\, fluctuating between meticulous discipline on one end\, and untethered feral energy on the other. This navigation of chaos and control is a testament to the technical skills and tour-honed collective intuition of guitarist/vocalist Aaron Turner (Isis\, Old Man Gloom\, Mamiffer)\, drummer Nick Yacyshyn (Baptists)\, and bassist Brian Cook (Russian Circles\, These Arms Are Snakes). \nTheir humanistic lyrics strike a compassionate tone that stands in stark contrast to the misanthropy of some heavy music\, and their sonic approach is akin to free jazz or abstract noise\, where the emotional resonance isn’t bound up in melody as much as in performance. Fusing heavy riffage\, knotty structures\, and expressionistic forays into epic\, wildly dynamic narrative arcs\, the music of SUMAC is by no means a salve or anodyne\, but neither is it nihilistic. Rather\, it’s like a confrontation\, a baptism by fire\, a therapeutic razing. Ultimately\, it’s a reminder of the life force that binds us together\, and a clarion call to be an active participant in an evolving world. \n \nMoor Mother \nHow do you engage the stunning\, evocative\, haunting gift that is Moor Mother’s latest album The Great Bailout? Only by following the trail of potent verbal and sonic poetry. Only by letting Moor Mother be your guide. \nReleased March 8\, The Great Bailout is Moor Mother aka Camae Ayewa’s ninth studio album\, and third with ANTI- Records. Called “the poet laureate of the apocalypse\,” by Pitchfork\, Ayewa’s music contains multitudes of instruments\, voices\, and cacophony that take on themes of Afrofuturism\, colonialism\, commerce and collective memory with the forebearers of jazz\, hip hop\, and beat poetry in mind. \nMoor Mother is presented by Coastal Jazz in association with Queer Arts Festival. \nPlease note this venue is stair access only. 19+. SUMMARY:FROM NEW YORK: LEZLIE HARRISON
DESCRIPTION:Lezlie Harrison is her own personal renaissance. Her constant state of evolution and growth brings with it\, gifts for those paying attention. As a vocalist both bold and subtle\, her vulnerability attends to the fragile matters of our collective human affairs while her optimistic momentum inspires us to rise above any tribulation to rejoice. Be it Jazz\, Blues\, Gospel\, Soul\, The American Song Form\, original compositions\, or any song in ANY form\, Ms. Harrison will imbue it with her distinctive stamp and make a very personal delivery. \nIn 2023 Harrison recorded Let Them Talk for Vancouver’s Cellar Music Group. “The songs I selected for this album share a message of bringing us together in our collective human experience. The music moves us in the way a preacher moves their congregation. We get up off our feet and hold on to the words and what they stir in us. We are transported to the absolute truth of the moment where we can join in the experience together. This is what the world needs right now\, and it is what I want…” \nWith Chris Gestrin hammond organ\, Alvin Brendan guitar\, and Jesse Cahill drums.

SUMMARY:Garret T. Willie
DESCRIPTION:1531 Johnston St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R9 \n“Canada’s next big thing in down-and-dirty rockin’ blues guitardom” — Toronto Star \nGarret T. Willie’s gives rock ‘n’ roll a formidable 21st-century kick in the ass with his heartbreaking and hilarious stories\, hardscrabble blues\, and hard-stomping rock ‘n’ roll. Hailing from Kingcome Inlet\, off the coast of BC\, the uncommonly wise\, witty and weathered 23-year-old’s heavy back story gives him more right than most to sing the blues\, but there’s a helluva lot of raunchy fun going on alongside the exorcisms of tragedy and trauma. \nWillie knows what makes the blues tick. Schooled in all the right source material\, from Howlin’ Wolf\, Albert King\, and Muddy Waters\, to Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee\, to the Stones\, AC/DC\, and George Thorogood\, with a little outlaw country flavour on the side\, Garret T. Willie doesn’t just rip it up on the guitar\, he does it with the gut-busting honesty of someone who understands that if you ain’t lived it\, you shouldn’t sing it. \nPresented in association with Talking Stick Festival.
