SUMMARY:Ensemble Constellation and Guests
DESCRIPTION:The music of Montreal-based Ensemble Constellation blends traditions from Africa\, Iran and Baroque music. For this show\, two of the group’s members\, Deo Munyakazi\, a Rwandan musician renowned for his mastery of the inanga\, a traditional zither from Africa\, and Reza Abaee\, originally from Iran\, who plays the fiddle ghaychak\, will be featured. Joining them are West African guitar virtuoso and singer Alpha Yaya Diallo and Ensemble Absinthe. Comprising violinist Edgar Bridwell\, violist Martina Smazal and Anne Duranceau on contrabass\, Ensemble Absinthe’s unusual addition of the contrabass rather than a string trio’s typical cello adds unexpected contrast to the rich\, fluid sounds of the violin and viola. \nPresented in association with North Shore Jazz and Festival d’ete.

Currently accompanied by James Meger on upright bass and Cole Schmidt on electric guitar\, the trio find otherworldly plateaus for these most earthly creations.

SUMMARY:Ches Smith's Clone Row
DESCRIPTION:Ches Smith’s June 2025 release on Otherly Love Records\, Clone Row\, debuts an adventurous new quartet featuring guitarists Mary Halvorson and Liberty Ellman\, and bassist Nick Dunston. Smith finds endless possibilities in this seemingly limited instrumentation\, weaving together varied threads from his divergent earlier projects in ways that sound not quite like any of them. \nThe four renowned composer-improvisers tangle with Ches Smith’s newest compositions. Two highly individualistic guitarists swirl\, echo and double-take\, squaring off with a bass and drums team that anchors and unhinges through doubling sounds — drum machines and acoustic drums\, low-end analog synth and acoustic bass\, digital samples and repeated fragments performed in real time. In a dance of coherence and chaos\, the four musicians plunge headlong into the feedback loop of composition and improvisation armed with chemistry created by their mutual appreciation and enduring friendships. \n“This definitely ain’t your father’s guitar band\,” writes no less an expert on six-string subversion than Marc Ribot\, who penned the album’s liner notes. “It’s as if I’m hearing a Jim Hall concert in which one of us did a lot of mushrooms\, or… some post-punk post-Dave Brubeck post-trip-hop experiment with classical form.” \nFeaturing Ches Smith drums/vibes/electronics\, Mary Halvorson guitar\, Liberty Ellman guitar\, Nick Dunston bass/electronics.

SUMMARY:Open Thread
DESCRIPTION:Open Thread—the innovative Melbourne-based ensemble of cellist Peggy Lee\, saxophonist Julien Wilson\, guitarist Theo Carbo\, and drummer/percussionist Dylan van der Schyff—weaves anthemic melodies\, diverse rhythmic structures\, and ear-awakening improvised soundscapes into an idiosyncratic collective identity. \nThe group was sparked by Peggy Lee’s move from Vancouver to Melbourne in 2023 and her desire to connect with local musicians (in addition to longtime collaborator van der Schyff). This led to a gathering of attuned talents\, and a leap into the rich\, joyful possibilities of a collective sound that’s as challenging as it is rewarding. \nWith compositions from each member alongside open-eared\, emotionally far-ranging improvisations\, the group calls equally on deep vocabularies of extended techniques and their shared\, playfully experimental love of melody and song forms. “The quartet dabbles in discordant soundscapes. But overall\, Open Thread conjures a delicate sound world\, asking that listeners put aside distractions and give themselves over to these carefully wrought melodies\, thronged with strange beauty and otherness.” – Rhythms Magazine

SUMMARY:Vancouver Jazz Orchestra Plays Dave Robbins Happy Faces
DESCRIPTION:Under the direction of saxophonist/clarinetist James Danderfer\, the Vancouver Jazz Orchestra (VJO) features an array of the city’s finest jazz artists. The VJO is dedicated to the presentation of classic big band music as well as a focus on Vancouver composers\, past and present. Recent performances have featured international artists such as Jeremy Pelt and Seamus Blake and 2025 promises to be the VJO’s biggest year yet\, starting off with this unique presentation. \nThis evening will highlight a seminal figure in the legacy of large ensemble jazz in Vancouver\, in Canada\, and beyond: Dave Robbins. As a trombonist\, bandleader\, arranger\, composer\, and teacher\, Robbins made invaluable contributions to the fine art of big band and jazz orchestra performance. Shockingly\, no recordings of large ensembles led by Robbins have been available for years; instead\, studio and live recordings were passed privately between enthusiasts. That was the case until now\, with the release of the album Happy Faces on Reel to Real Recordings. Join the VJO as they celebrate! \nWith Michael Kim\, Brad Turner\, Thomas Marriott\, Brian Harding\, Ellen Marple\, Dawn Haylett\, James Danderfer\, Mike Braverman\, Mia Gazley\, Sharon Minemoto\, André Lachance\, & Dave Robbins.

Inspired by seeing a full moon as the sun was rising during the global pandemic\, it’s an apt image for a suite of music that taps into deep reservoirs of emotion while keeping “enough uplift and whimsy in the playing to remedy any unsought melancholy. The welcome catharsis in Jensen’s vision expands both ways” (Downbeat). \nJensen is constantly in motion as an improviser\, composer and bandleader. A Downbeat Critic’s Poll Rising Star winner in multiple categories (Big Band\, Arranger\, and Soprano Saxophonist)\, she’s performed with Jeremy Pelt\, Phil Dwyer\, Donny McCaslin\, Swedish pianist Maggi Olin\, and scores of other creative jazz greats\, including her sister Ingrid Jensen and their Infinitude ensemble featuring Ben Monder. \nHer Quartet features inventive first-call Montréal players in drummer Jim Doxas and bassist Adrian Vedady\, as well as NYC-based pianist Gary Versace\, whose remarkable resumé includes work with John Scofield\, John Abercrombie\, and Maria Schneider. \n“Always a compelling writer\, capable of strong lyricism combined with harmonic invention and plenty of narrative twists and turns\, Jensen’s music not only impresses on a first encounter\, but reveals more with each and every listen.” – All About Jazz \nThis is an accessible venue.
