DESCRIPTION:Recent weeks have witnessed changes and upheavals in people’s lives around the globe\, as we face the impacts of a global pandemic and of a widespread crisis in social and racial justice. As we begin to learn how to confront our shared distances and to discover hopeful ways of coming together\, the improvising arts\, particularly music\, offer significant opportunities to confront\, to explore and to understand some of these vital changes. \n1:30-2:30pm: Anna Webber & Angela Morris \n3:00-4:00pm: Gerald Cleaver \nThe International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation\, at the University of British Columbia\, presents this on-line colloquium in collaboration with Coastal Jazz and Western Front to offer musicians and artists an opportunity to engage with these issues in their own creative practices. How does music help us potentially to persevere in the face of crisis? In what ways does improvisation offer sustained hope or sustaining vitality? Does music of the moment\, in the present tense\, address the possibility of reparation\, or of repairing our challenging relationships with each other and with the world? How might the improvising arts encourage communities to move forward? \nAudiences around the planet are warmly invited to listen to the talks\, and to participate in on-line discussion with each of the presenters. The colloquium strives to uplift\, elevate and support the work of significant improvising artists from around the world.

Hailing from across the country\, the group met while studying music at McGill University in Montreal. Since\, they have performed their music throughout central Canada. Adventurous yet lyrical\, Devlin’s strong compositional voice unites this group of talented improvisors into a cohesive unit. Each musician plays with a selfless dedication to Devlin’s weaving melodies and intricate rhythms. The group is excited to announce the imminent release of their first full length studio album\, due out in March 2020. \nWith Claire Devlin tenor sax\, Roman Munoz guitar\, Summer Kodama bass\, and John Buck drums.

DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled due to COVID-19. \nKutapira is a marimba and percussion ensemble formed in 2005 in East Vancouver. The band is made up of five musicians\, ages 25-30\, who started playing this fusion of world music when they were kids over 15 years ago. At the core of this band is the marimba music of Zimbabwe\, fused with West African djembe\, Afro-cuban conga’s and timbales and traditional drum kit which provides a steady driving groove. All members switch seamlessly between marimba and percussion. There is a magic created at the shows between audience and band members. From toddlers to young adults\, from seniors to elementary school students\, the energy and unique musical fusion has been able to ignite something within people of all ages and from all walks of life.

DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled due to COVID-19. \nPianist Sharon Minemoto’s Quartet is made up of some of Western Canada’s finest musicians. Her memorable compositions are influenced by a wide range of composers such as Herbie Hancock\, Kenny Wheeler\, Stevie Wonder and Alexander Scriabin. Much of the music on their recent release\, “Safe Travels” is written in memory of Minemoto’s long-time partner\, jazz pianist/saxophonist Ross Taggart who lost his battle with renal cancer in 2013. Raul da Gama of The Whole Note Magazine describes Minemoto as “imaginative and lyrical as a composer\, with pianistic technique in spades… (The album) will also draw accolades for its gorgeous\, cinematic quality.” \nWith Jon Bentley saxophones\, Adam Thomas bass and Bernie Arai drums.

Today\, as a rising star\, Gonzalez follows in the footsteps of jazz’s ancestral forebears. To date\, he has shared the stage with heavy hitters like Christian McBride\, Roy Hargrove\, Antonio Sanchez\, T.K. Blue\, and Nicholas Payton\, and has garnered critical acclaim for his work on Kenny Garrett’s Grammy-nominated album Seeds from the Underground.
