SUMMARY:Pivoting to Digital
DESCRIPTION:Many months ago we were all enjoying concerts\, crowded shoulder to shoulder\, basking in our favourite songs being sung live. But suddenly\, a mandatory pivot to digital was expected of musicians everywhere.  What happens when a musician is put on the spot\, expected to share a pre-recorded performance as part of an interview\, or festival after the fact?  As art has carried us through the pandemic\, the presenter’s and public’s relationship with performances has considerably changed due to going virtual\, but your rights haven’t. In this panel discussion co-presented by the Vancouver International Jazz Festival\, we’ll be joined by two time JUNO-nominated bassist\, composer\, and educator Jodi Proznick alongside Tim Reinert\, Vancouver-based writer and broadcaster\, and Matthew Lien\, songwriter\, composer\, producer\, and performer to discuss the musician’s pivot to digital. \nMeet the panelists: \nJodi Proznick \nTwo time Juno-nominated bassist\, composer\, bandleader\, and educator Jodi Proznick has earned a reputation as one of Canada’s finest jazz artists. She has won numerous National Jazz Awards\, including Bassist of the Year in ’08 and ’09. Her group\, the Jodi Proznick Quartet\, was awarded the Acoustic Group of the Year and Album of the Year in ‘08 and the Galaxie Rising Star at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival in ’04. In 2019\, Jodi was awarded the Western Canadian Music Award for Jazz Artist of the Year\, and also regularly performs with her own quartet featuring her husband Tilden Webb on piano and with Triology\, which features pianist Miles Black and guitarist Bill Coon. For more information go to www.jodiproznick.com. \nTim Reinert \nTim Reinert is a Vancouver-based writer and broadcaster who mainly writes and talks about music\, and most of that writing and talking is about jazz. His weekly jazz show on Mixcloud\, The\nInfidels\, is coming up on its two-year anniversary\, and he has just announced the creation of a brand-new record label dedicated to celebrating and supporting musicians that play in various jazz traditions. The first release is It Becomes Us by Kenton Loewen and JP Carter. It was produced by Tim\, and is scheduled for release on June 18\, 2021.Tim has also been emceeing jazz concerts all over Vancouver for different organizations for over 25 years. He can be found at: theinfidelsjazz.ca \nMatthew Lien \nMatthew Lien is a songwriter\, composer\, producer\, and performer. His first release “Bleeding Wolves” became a multi-platinum legend in Southeast Asia where his 20+ albums remain popular today. He’s received honours never bestowed upon a foreigner in the region\, including first to perform at Southeast Asia’s Grammy-equivalent\, first nominated\, and first to win. For his efforts to promote indigenous and traditional culture through music\, he’s been appointed Ambassador and Honourary Citizen by several regional governments\, Cultural Ambassador by Taiwan’s government\, and Man of the Year by Esquire magazine. Back home in Canada\, he’s been awarded Best Yukon Artist and received two nominations at the WCMAs\, Canada’s Parliamentary Certificate of Honour\, Taiwan embassy’s Certificate of Appreciation\, and an appointment as Yukon’s Special Envoy to Taiwan. His research into immersive audio and acoustic archaeology have earned him the 2021 Yukon Innovation Prize.

SUMMARY:Les Angles Mortes & Amahl Arulanandam
DESCRIPTION:The African diaspora’s contribution to European art music has been substantial but a history of white supremacy and racial oppression has largely erased their contributions.  With this concert\, Music Gallery\, Innovations en concert\, Western Front\, Music on Main\, NOW Society\, Coastal Jazz and Blues and Suoni Per Il Popolo collaborate to bring an online performance of two major works by African-American composers\, performed by Canadian artists\, to audiences world-wide: Julia Perry’s Stabat Mater and Julius Eastman’s The Holy Presence of Joan D’Arc. \n\nLes Angles Mortes is a Montreal based ensemble directed by Julie Richard that revives marginalized classical works composed by African-American women. The ensemble rediscovers\, re-contextualizes and sometimes reimagines these works so that they will not be forgotten and so that they can take their place in the history of contemporary music. \nThey will present a version of Julia Perry’s Stabat Mater. \n\nToronto-based cellist Amahl Arulanandam is known for his musical versatility and ability to adapt to many different genres. From baroque music to heavy metal\, in studios\, small clubs and large concert-halls\, Amahl hopes to convey that musical expression is beyond genres and labels. \nIn this pre-recorded performance\, he plays all ten cello parts of The Holy Presence of Joan D’Arc\, written by Julius Eastman. \n\nThese two performances will be streamed for free by Suoni TV at suoniperilpopolo.org at 5:00PM PST/8:00 PM EST on April 1\, 2021\, and will be available afterward on the Coastal Jazz YouTube page. Trading Places is a co presentation of Suoni per il Popolo\, Music on Main\, NOW Society\, Western Front\, and Coastal Jazz.

SUMMARY:Bruno Hubert Trio with Brad Turner
DESCRIPTION:Presented with   \nA native of Maniwaki Quebec Bruno started to play drums in his first rock band at the age of 14\, playing rock music in local bars and in the town marching band. His plans to become a professional drummer were soon derailed when college requirements obliged him to study piano. With a deep sense of swing and beguiling melodic lines evocative of Keith Jarrett\, Herbie Hancock\, and Bill Evans\, he pilots medley-like journeys through jazz standards\, soul\, rock\, and pop-influenced pieces. Hubert has recorded with artists as diverse as Denzil Sinclair and his long-time idol Gino Vannelli\, and starred in a feature film\, Bruno’s Blues\, alongside many other stalwarts of the Vancouver scene. The film is available on iTunes. \nBrad Turner’s phenomenal talents as a trumpeter\, pianist\, drummer and composer make him one of Canada’s most in-demand and highly esteemed musicians. As a leader\, Brad has released seven albums\, six as a trumpeter with his quartet\, and one as a pianist with his trio. In addition to JUNOs for his work with the trio Metalwood\, he has also won a National Jazz Award for Composer of the Year\, Musician of the Year\, Trumpeter of the Year\, Producer of the Year\, and the Vancouver Mayor’s Arts Award\, among many other honours. Brad is a member of the jazz studies faculty at Capilano University\, and plays Cannonball trumpets. \nWith James Meger bass and Joel Fountain drums. \n  \nPresented with the additional support of

SUMMARY:Jamie Lee Trio
DESCRIPTION:Presented with   \nJamie Lee Trio is a Vancouver-based jazz piano trio led by drummer and composer Jamie Lee. Formed during their time at Capilano University\, the trio plays genre-defying original music inspired by exploring soundscapes and painting melodic stories. Grounded in Jamie’s intricate compositions\, the trio brings narratives to life through explosive improvisation and nuanced interplay. \nThe trioʼs debut full-length album\, Introspective\, was released last February\, and consists of 10 of Jamie’s original songs. The title of the album signals a self-reflective deep dive into the artistʼs mind and explores the subjects that preoccupy her inner world—from enjoying striped socks to profound realizations about life as an immigrant\, queer person\, and instrumentalist. \nWith James Dekker piano and Marcus Abramzik bass. \n\nPresented with the additional support of

SUMMARY:Mars Williams presents an Ayler Xmas
DESCRIPTION:Saxophonist Mars Williams is most famous as a member of The Psychedelic Furs\, but has proven his jazz bona fides with Peter Brötzmann and Ken Vandermark\, and while guiding Liquid Soul and Hal Russell’s NRG Ensemble\, to name just a few. (His rock CV is also varied\, including Akron New Wave band The Waitresses and work with Billy Idol\, Ministry\, Massacre\, and many more.) \nWilliams also leads the Albert Ayler tribute band Witches & Devils\, and out of their holiday concerts grew a unique tradition. One listen and you’ll hear that\, as odd as that concept may seem\, it’s brilliantly effective\, with the disparate melodies working together in their common projection of joy and celebration — which is painfully needed at this point in time amidst the current climate. \nWith: \nJosh Berman – Cornet\, \nJim Baker – Piano\, Viola\, Arp Synth \nKent Kessler – Bass \nBrian Sandstrom – Bass\, Guitar\, Trumpet \nSteve Hunt – Drums \nwith Guests: Keefe Jackson – Bari Sax \nKatinka Kleijn – Cello \nPeter Maunu – Violin \nWant to support the artists directly? SUMMARY:Laila Biali Trio
DESCRIPTION:“A voice that makes the listener shudder it’s so rounded and pure”—Montreal Gazette \nKeyboardist/vocalist Laila Biali moves effortlessly between incandescent contemporary jazz and absorbing modern pop. An acclaimed composer\, deeply personal lyricist\, and acute interpreter\, the Toronto-based Vancouverite has taken home a JUNO for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year. In Laila’s eclectic and energetic live show\, melodies take thrilling left turns and bold choruses give way to thoughtful instrumental interludes. One minute Biali is soaring over a hard-charging\, bluesy storm\, the next she’s pouring out her soul on an impassioned ballad. It’s jazz\, it’s pop\, it can’t be put into a box… but it’s definitely beautiful. \nWith Jodi Proznick\, bass and Ben Wittman\, drums. \nStream on Coastal Jazz’s Facebook Page\, Instagram TV\, YouTube\, or Twitch. \nIn the festival spirit of no-cost\, accessible shows\, these performances can be enjoyed free of charge by anyone\, anywhere. SUMMARY:IMPROVISING FORWARD: PERSEVERE\, REPAIR\, SUSTAIN
DESCRIPTION:**Due to unforeseen circumstances Day 2 of the colloquium will be postponed. Please check the Western Front/Coastal Jazz/IISCI websites in the coming weeks for a new date** \nRecent weeks have witnessed changes and upheavals in people’s lives around the globe\, as we face the impacts of a global pandemic and of a widespread crisis in social and racial justice. As we begin to learn how to confront our shared distances and to discover hopeful ways of coming together\, the improvising arts\, particularly music\, offer significant opportunities to confront\, to explore and to understand some of these vital changes. \n12:00-1:00pm: Elisa Thorn & Robyn Jacob (The Giving Shapes) \n1:30-2:30pm: Darius Jones \n3:00-4:00pm: Fay Victor \nThe International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation\, at the University of British Columbia\, presents this on-line colloquium in collaboration with Coastal Jazz and Western Front to offer musicians and artists an opportunity to engage with these issues in their own creative practices. How does music help us potentially to persevere in the face of crisis? In what ways does improvisation offer sustained hope or sustaining vitality? Does music of the moment\, in the present tense\, address the possibility of reparation\, or of repairing our challenging relationships with each other and with the world? How might the improvising arts encourage communities to move forward? \nAudiences around the planet are warmly invited to listen to the talks\, and to participate in on-line discussion with each of the presenters. The colloquium strives to uplift\, elevate and support the work of significant improvising artists from around the world.
