SUMMARY:Miles Black Quintet Plays the Music of David Rehorick
DESCRIPTION:David Rehorick started studying jazz piano around age thirty. During the 1970s and 80s\, he performed with The Ungroupables\, and later Jazz Configuration in Fredericton\, New Brunswick. Two early compositions—Vancouver (1977) and Song of Joy (1984)—appear on the album. In 2016\, David discovered a folder of compositional drafts that he began developing\, in dialogue with Miles Black. In quick succession\, Remembering Ian\, Pedal Off\, and Soft Green were charted. Other tunes emerged through open-ended piano explorations\, usually late at night: Da-De-Do Blues\, Step Up\, Hoo You\, Neville-san\, and Route Canal. Cozy Sizzle marks David’s first lyrical conception. The Miles Black Quartet recorded the eleven original tunes in July 2018\, featuring Steve Maddock on Cozy Sizzle. Recently\, David’s album was featured on Mélojazz\, hosted by Diane Laflamme Millette at 94.5\, uniqueFM in Ottawa. \nThis evening features Miles Black piano/guitar\, Jodi Proznick bass\, Steve Kaldestad alto/tenor sax\, Julian MacDonough drums\, and special guest Steve Maddock vocals.

SUMMARY:From New York: Peter Bernstein
DESCRIPTION:Jazz guitarist Peter Bernstein has been a part of the jazz scene in New York and abroad since 1989. Peter has appeared in groups led by Sonny Rollins\, Bobby Hutcherson\, George Coleman\, Lou Donaldson\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, Fathead Newman\, Joshua Redman\, Brad Mehldau\, Diana Krall\, Lee Konitz\, Jimmy Cobb and many more. \nThere are three main aspects to Peter Bernstein’s playing that make him one of the most important jazz guitarists of his generation: First there is his incredible ability to swing—he makes every note and chord feel good\, and gives the impression that playing the guitar is effortless; Second is Peter’s musical economy. There is a tendency among some musicians to equate ‘good improvising’ with the number of notes\, but his approach is simply to make every note count. His improvisations have direction and meaning. Third\, and perhaps most impressively\, Peter’s guitar sound knocks your socks off. It’s clear\, warm\, and singing from top to bottom. Like a great grand piano whose eighty-eight keys sound equal and true\, Peter’s rich sonority is present no matter what register he plays in. \nWith Nick Peck piano\, Paul Rushka bass and Jesse Cahill drums

SUMMARY:Micah Barnes (of The Nylons) Christmas in New York
DESCRIPTION:This Holiday season let chart topping Jazz crooner Micah Barnes take you on a musical tour through New York City! Micah’s show “Christmas in New York” includes favorite holiday tunes\, Nylons classics and Jazz standards that pay tribute to the musical history of New York! \nVisit legendary musical landmarks such as The Brill Building\, The Savoy Ballroom\, The Cotton Club\, The Apollo Theatre\, and Broadway’s Time Square with songs that will give you that “Holiday in The Big Apple” experience! \nNew York has long been an inspiration to musicians in the Jazz world so it’s no surprise that when Micah began writing his latest disc there he found the musical history of the city deeply inspiring. Living in an apartment right on the site of the legendary Savoy Ballroom and writing in a piano studio near Time Square\, Micah found a deep connection to the Jazz and Blues standards written in the 30’s and 40’s\, by folks such as Cole Porter\, George Gershwin and Howard Arlen\, many of which debuted at The Cotton Club or in popular Broadway shows. The creative explosion of Doo Wop and early R & B written and produced at The Brill Building and heard at venues such as The Apollo Theatre was also a huge influence on Micah as he composed the romantic songs that make up his chart topping eOne Music release “New York Stories.”   \nWith Tilden Webb on piano\, Jodi Proznick on bass and Jesse Cahill on drums

SUMMARY:From New York: Ari Hoenig Trio
DESCRIPTION:Possessed of an innate enquiring mind\, Philadelphia-born drummer Ari Hoenig relentlessly explores the melodic possibilities of the drums. He has worked with a long and impressive list of musicians ranging from Joshua Redman to Mike Stern\, Shirley Scott\, and Richard Bona – they’re all on Hoenig’s CV. He released his latest album\, The Pauper And The Magician\, in 2016. The other members of the Ari Hoenig Trio are the highly talented Israeli musicians Nitai Hershkovits and Or Bareket. Pianist Hershkovits is equally at home in jazz as he is in classical music. His playing is elegant and tinged with melancholy. He has performed at major festivals like the Antibes Jazz Festival and Montreux. Bassist Bareket’s career is one of the fastest moving on the New York jazz scene. His distinctive improvisation style reflects Mediterranean\, South American\, and North African influences but is nonetheless always rooted in the traditions of American jazz.

SUMMARY:Maya Rae
DESCRIPTION:Prodigious young talents performing jazz music and the American Songbook have gone back to the beginnings of the genre – artists like Ella Fitzgerald and even Judy Garland were blowing away listeners of all ages with their talent\, incredible tone and sense of swing from their teenage years and beyond. \nThis phenomenon has led to an ongoing output of incredible female singers over the decades\, that continues today with Vancouver-based\, 16 year-old singer\, musician and composer\, Maya Rae. Maya is inspired by musicians like Ella Fitzgerald\, Billie Holiday\, Nina Simone and The Beatles\, and modern-day artists like Jamie Cullum\, Megan Trainor\, Ed Sheeran\, and Adele. This is not uncommon with singers today – growing up in an iTunes or Spotify generation\, young artists can find themselves listening to a compilation of hundreds of songs from dozens of genres\, all in one session. It has led to a generation that is blind to genre or musical confines – the key is to find a balance in these influences\, allowing the listener a musical experience and journey in concert that is entertaining and enlightening. \nIn her short career as a performer\, Maya has found that balance and is becoming a meaningful storyteller on the stage. \nWith John Lee on piano\, and Luis Rudner on bass.

SUMMARY:From New York: Sheryl Bailey
DESCRIPTION:Hailed as a “sizzling guitar goddess\,” by The NYC Jazz Record\, Sheryl Bailey has transcended the familiar trio of organ\, guitar\, and drums and raised it to an exciting new plane:“The ultimate organ trio”\, according to JazzImprov Magazine. Fronted by Sheryl’s guitar with Ian Froman on drums and Ron Oswasnki on organ\, The Sheryl Bailey 3 offers a new spin on the popular organ trio format pioneered by past guitar masters\, Wes Montgomery and Pat Martino. The SB3 is just as funky and soulful as these classic groups.
