SUMMARY:Kandace Springs
DESCRIPTION:“Well\, here’s a lady in serious demand.”—London Jazz News \nSince making her sold-out TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival debut at Pyatt Hall in 2017\, Nashville native Kandace Springs has made a lot of friends with her engaging talent. \nAs The Guardian said in a four-star review\, “she has a rare ability that can’t be taught—to sound like an old soul\, just doing what comes naturally.” The singer/songwriter/pianist makes warm and sophisticated soul\, pop\, and jazz with a stunning voice and original material that she showcased on her debut recording\, Soul Eyes (Blue Note). This spring\, she released her EP Black Orchid. Taking inspiration from the likes of Nina Simone\, Billie Holiday\, and Lauryn Hill\, the organic\, intimate\, and deeply soulful sound of this “suave songstress” (Wall Street Journal) is remarkably fresh but universally appealing. \nShe’s just coming off a 35-date tour with Hall and Oates\, so don’t miss her in this intimate venue—her star is on the rise.

SUMMARY:Ches Smith\, Mat Maneri\, Craig Taborn
DESCRIPTION:“His [Smith’s] first album as a composer and bandleader on the iconic ECM label burns with a subtle heat.” —Pitchfork \nThis exciting trio returns to Vancouver with three of the most notable musicians in New York’s vibrant creative music scene—drummer Ches Smith (John Zorn\, Tim Berne\, Marc Ribot)\, pianist Craig Taborn (Chris Potter\, Dave Douglas\, Wadada Leo Smith)\, and violist Mat Maneri (Marilyn Crispell\, Paul Motian). \nOriginally formed as a one-off impromptu session\, this exceptional trio combines spare compositions by Smith augmented with plenty of space for white-hot improvisation. The group’s 2016 debut release on ECM\, The Bell\, revelled in the contrast between furious grooves and subtle stillness; dramatic tension and quiet mystery.

SUMMARY:Gordon Grdina\, Matthew Shipp\, Mark Helias
DESCRIPTION:“…[Grdina is] a player of unbridled musical ingenuity” —World Music Report \n“Helias’ intense and almost indescribable bass playing… exists on a level reserved for the elite of new music bassists today.” —Signal to Noise \n“the pianist’s [Shipp’s] brain seems to fire on all cylinders all the time.” —JazzTimes \nThe always-inventive Gordon Grdina has a talent for putting together interesting projects and this one is no exception. The Vancouver-based oud/guitar master frequently plays with bassist Mark Helias (BassDrumBone\, Open Loose). The addition of genius pianist Matthew Shipp promises a not-to-be-missed collaboration. \nMark Helias last appeared for Coastal Jazz during the 2017 festival\, with his long-running project BassDrumBone. The prolific bassist and composer has performed with a panoply of world class artists including Edward Blackwell\, Anthony Davis\, Dewey Redman\, Abbey Lincoln\, Oliver Lake\, Andrew Cyrille\, Marilyn Crispell\, Julius Hemphill\, Don Byron\, Bobby Bradford\, Don Cherry\, and Cecil Taylor. \nMatthew Shipp has been hailed as a complete stylistic innovator on the piano. AllMusic refers to his “unique and recognizable style\,” and Jazziz Magazine calls Shipp “stunning in originality.” His recent work touches on the relationship between free jazz\, contemporary classical\, and popular forms like punk rock\, hip hop\, and electronica.

SUMMARY:Darius Jones Quartet featuring Emilie Lesbros Le bébé de Brigitte (Lost in Translation)
DESCRIPTION:“The most visceral and distinctive alto saxophonist of this era.” —The New York Times \nNew York alto saxophonist and composer Darius Jones presents the most recent of the projects in his Man’ish Boy epic\, an ambitious multi-recording program reflecting his unique aesthetic and cosmology. Le bébé de Brigitte (Lost in Translation) adds the distinctive talents of French singer and composer\, Emilie Lesbros\, to sing a rich and varied suite of songs by her and Jones (composed together and separately) that are animated by his massive-toned alto playing. \nBy turns introspective\, swinging\, and searing\, the suite—with lyrics in both English and French—is steeped in the histories of jazz and chanson\, but reflects a highly personal shared musical language that Jones’s superb ensemble fleshes out evocatively through improvisation: John Escreet (piano\, Rhodes)\, Sean Conly (bass)\, and Ches Smith (drums).
