SUMMARY:Harpdog Brown & The Uptown Blues Band
DESCRIPTION:Canada’s classic blues icon is back on the road again bringing his new Uptown Blues Band to Frankie’s. \nHarpdog is a real-deal purveyor of classic electric blues. Think of the old Chess Records and Sun Records of the late 40s and early 50s. When he performs with the Uptown Blues Band – a vintage New Orleans Blues sound featuring\, piano\, clarinet/sax\, upright-bass and drums – it’s Harpdog as  you’ve never seen or heard before. Still a vintage vibe\, just a different vintage. Get ready for this music to move you. \nWith Dave Webb piano\, Bob Grant drums\, Joe Abbott clarinet/alto sax\, and Skye Lambourne trombone.

SUMMARY:From New York: Emmet Cohen Trio
DESCRIPTION:“Cohen demonstrates his remarkable range and abilities\, which evoke both Chick Corea and Earl “Fatha” Hines at his most adventurous.” —WGBO \nRapidly establishing himself as Vancouver’s (and the world’s) favourite piano player\, Emmet Cohen\, swings through town with his all-star trio. \nCohen was last in town during the 2018 festival with special guest Houston Person\, but this intimate Frankie’s Jazz Club appearance will give audiences a chance to appreciate his extraordinary piano playing fully. Audience members will be treated to a master class in stylistic juxtapositions\, including the melding of stride\, blues\, church\, bebop\, free\, and contemporary styles\, resulting in the innovative sound of swing’s future. \nCohen has noted that playing jazz\, “is enriched immeasurably by connecting and studying with jazz masters\, forging backward to the very creation of the art form.” Don’t miss an opportunity to see where those studies have taken this contemporary master.

SUMMARY:Oliver Gannon Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Legendary guitarist Oliver Gannon cites Barney Kessell and Wes Montgomery as formative models\, horn players as conceptual influences\, and Art Blakey’s music as a favourite direction. His fluid\, swinging style is rooted in 50s and 60s bop. He is a generous leader\, allowing the band members lots of room to contribute. \nWith Nick Peck piano\, Russ Botten bass and Craig Scott drums \nABOUT JAZZ FOR BARB SERIES AND THE ITALIAN CULTURAL CENTRE \nBarbara Fudge was a passionate and loyal fan of jazz music. She could be seen all over the city at various jazz events talking and laughing with her friends\, mingling with the musicians and enjoying a glass of fine wine. Her personality and laugh were contagious and although no longer with us\, her larger than life spirit shines bright. We are so happy to be able to honour her with our ‘Jazz For Barb’ Series.

SUMMARY:John Stetch & Vulneraville
DESCRIPTION:Six-time Juno nominee John Stetch brings his New York quartet Vulneraville to Frankie’s Jazz Club in celebration of Stetch’s 15th album The Vancouver Concert (recorded this past May). \nA native of Edmonton\, pianist John Stetch pushes the boundaries of his jazz and classical training to incorporate melodies from all around the world and across American culture: from Mozart to Ukrainian folk music to the theme from The Love Boat. John has toured extensively in the United States and overseas\, performing and collaborating with classical and world musicians and jazz greats such as Rufus Reid\, Seamus Blake\, and Mark Turner. John has released 14 albums as a leader\, and won the Prix du Jazz award at the Montreal International Jazz Festival. John recently relocated from New York to Vancouver. \nVulneraville’s music ranges from energetic swing to world/pop suites to classical-ish cinematic excursions. “This personnel is my best chemistry and most devoted team yet!” says Stetch. Cincinnati-born Steve Kortyka is a saxophonist who has been touring with Lady Gaga whenever she does her jazz project\, plus working on a variety of other jazz projects in New York. Philippe Lemm is Holland’s most in-demand drummer\, a busy leader in his own right\, who has studied Indian and funk music extensively\, and 25-year-old Rochester native Ben Tiberio has already played bass in the top clubs of New York City.

SUMMARY:Tony Wilson's Tribute to Sonny Greenwich
DESCRIPTION:Guitarist Tony Wilson\, pianist Chris Gestrin\, bassist André Lachance and drummer Dylan van der Schyff pay tribute to the great Canadian guitarist Sonny Greenwich. Sonny Greenwich came to prominence in the 1970s and his career spanned several decades. His very original style combines the phrasing of jazz great Grant Green and the spiritual qualities of John Coltrane’s music. The band will be performing tunes by Sonny and a few original compositions by Tony Wilson.

SUMMARY:King Khan & the Shrines
DESCRIPTION:King Khan\, Aquarius and founder of the greatest cult phenomenon since the parting of the Milky Way\, brings his 8-piece musical shrine back to Vancouver. Dressed in their ceremonial duds\, King Khan and the Shrines are more than just a psychedelic soul revue. Imagine Roky Erickson backed by the Sun Ra Arkestra; or Wilson Pickett leading The Velvet Underground\, wearing a golden cape that wraps around the world; or a Bollywood James Brown reading his self- made tarot cards. If musical salvation is what you need\, look no further. The stories and legends that surround the band and its charismatic leader are wild and often hilarious. If true or not\, one thing is for sure:\n“King Khan is that fiery arrow shot into the night sky which no one knows how high or far it will travel\, however we do know that as that fiery arrow streaks across the heavens\, along the way its flames will light up dark places.” – John B. Smith founder of Memphis activist group The Invaders.

SUMMARY:Michael Blake's Variety Hour: Halloween Special
DESCRIPTION:The New York City based saxophonist Michael Blake is no stranger to hometown fans. He’s been performing and recording with members of his band The Variety Hour for over a decade\, this time getting together to play this Halloween Special. \nThe music covers movie themes (yes\, that movie theme)\, standards\, and rarely heard jazz tunes with a definitive macabre tone. Michael explains what sparked this idea\, “Over the years I would hear people say that sometimes free jazz sounds ‘scary’. It’s true that exploring the dark and uncharted territories of sound can lead to some pretty terrifying music. The man-made world is too often scary and nature’s violence is frighteningly beautiful. I wanted to make the weird and horrific accessible and put it in context. Since everyone loves Halloween I thought\, why not use the idea of scary ‘fun’ to my advantage? So a few years ago we started playing standards like ‘Witchcraft’ and oddities like drummer ‘Philly’ Joe Jones ‘Blues for Dracula’. And ‘stalking Monster by Duke Ellington”

SUMMARY:Subtle Degrees: A Dance That Empties
DESCRIPTION:“…music that is deeply rewarding. ****1/2” —Downbeat \nA Dance That Empties (New Amsterdam) is Travis Laplante’s latest album-length composition\, written for Subtle Degrees\, a two-musician ensemble featuring Laplante (tenor saxophone) and Gerald Cleaver (drums). The duo’s sound evokes everything from contemporary classical\, to avant-garde jazz; minimalism to technical metal and sacred world music. Laplante is also the founder/composer of saxophone quartet Battle Trance and the ensemble Little Women. \nExtremely demanding\, both technically and physically\, A Dance That Empties’ raw\, vulnerable instrumentation makes for an intimately emotional experience for both performers and listeners. The piece is the culmination of a very long musical relationship. \nIn 2001\, when he was only 18 years old\, Laplante played at New York’s Knitting Factory. Cleaver was in the audience\, and invited Laplante to play together sometime. They soon did\, “and I felt a very intimate and spiritual connection with Gerald that feels more alive than ever today\,” Laplante says.
