SUMMARY:Black Art Jazz Collective
DESCRIPTION:Founded by some of contemporary jazz’s leading lights\, the Black Art Jazz Collective’s original compositions both highlight the impressive chops each member possesses and reveal the deeply entwined history of jazz and the African-American civil rights movement. \nAt its core is a modernism that conjures up the classic bands of Art Blakey and acoustic Miles Davis. But\, with contemporary soul-fuelled solos and locked-in rhythm\, the band is more likely to launch into a counterpoint riff or the spacious funk of hip-hop than the svelte lines of classic walking bass. The Black Art Jazz Collective delivers strong original tunes and purposeful\, form-hugging improvisation that keeps things looking forward rather than back \nWith Jeremy Pelt trumpet\, Wayne Escoffery saxophone\, James Burton III trombone\, Xavier Davis piano\, Corcoran Holt bass\, and Johnathan Blake drums. \nThis evening’s performance is supported by an anonymous donor.

SUMMARY:Dawn Pemberton with The Sharon Minemoto Trio
DESCRIPTION:Reel to Real Recordings is proud to announce the label’s co-inaugural release\, A Soulful Sunday: Live at the Left Bank\, a previously unissued live recording of the under-appreciated songstress Etta Jones featuring the Cedar Walton Trio with bassist Sam Jones and drummer Billy Higgins recorded on February 27\, 1972 at the Famous Ballroom in Baltimore\, Maryland. There has been no recorded documentation of Etta Jones during this stretch between 1971 and 1974\, so this never-before-heard recording fills in an important gap in Jones’s discography and showcases her in fine form. \nWith Dawn Pemberton vocals\, Sharon Minemoto piano\, John Lee bass\, and Joe Poole drums.

SUMMARY:Neil Gonsalves Trio featuring Vanessa Mood
DESCRIPTION:Rights\, rites and riots. \nSouth African pianist/composer\, Neil Gonsalves presents a selection of original compositions and standards that are evocative of the majesty and beauty of South Africa and its people\, and of a young democracy that often fights its battles in song. \nGonsalves’ musical interests and range of influence is broad\, and while steeped in the hymnal tradition\, township jive and Zulu and Xhosa folk music of South Africa\, his is a multicultural approach that will turn to swing\, Latin\, Afro-beat\, bhangra or bulerias in a heartbeat. It is often his modus operandi to recontextualise music\, and especially to reorientate the American songbook within the simpler harmonic movements and the rooted rhythmic gestures of South African traditional and popular music grooves. \nHe will be accompanied by Kerry Galloway on bass and Tony Ferraro on drums\, and will feature South African-born\, Vancouver-based singer\, Vanessa Mood.

SUMMARY:Miles Black Quintet Plays the Music of David Rehorick
DESCRIPTION:David Rehorick started studying jazz piano around age thirty. During the 1970s and 80s\, he performed with The Ungroupables\, and later Jazz Configuration in Fredericton\, New Brunswick. Two early compositions—Vancouver (1977) and Song of Joy (1984)—appear on the album. In 2016\, David discovered a folder of compositional drafts that he began developing\, in dialogue with Miles Black. In quick succession\, Remembering Ian\, Pedal Off\, and Soft Green were charted. Other tunes emerged through open-ended piano explorations\, usually late at night: Da-De-Do Blues\, Step Up\, Hoo You\, Neville-san\, and Route Canal. Cozy Sizzle marks David’s first lyrical conception. The Miles Black Quartet recorded the eleven original tunes in July 2018\, featuring Steve Maddock on Cozy Sizzle. Recently\, David’s album was featured on Mélojazz\, hosted by Diane Laflamme Millette at 94.5\, uniqueFM in Ottawa. \nThis evening features Miles Black piano/guitar\, Jodi Proznick bass\, Steve Kaldestad alto/tenor sax\, Julian MacDonough drums\, and special guest Steve Maddock vocals.

SUMMARY:From New York: Peter Bernstein
DESCRIPTION:Jazz guitarist Peter Bernstein has been a part of the jazz scene in New York and abroad since 1989. Peter has appeared in groups led by Sonny Rollins\, Bobby Hutcherson\, George Coleman\, Lou Donaldson\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, Fathead Newman\, Joshua Redman\, Brad Mehldau\, Diana Krall\, Lee Konitz\, Jimmy Cobb and many more. \nThere are three main aspects to Peter Bernstein’s playing that make him one of the most important jazz guitarists of his generation: First there is his incredible ability to swing—he makes every note and chord feel good\, and gives the impression that playing the guitar is effortless; Second is Peter’s musical economy. There is a tendency among some musicians to equate ‘good improvising’ with the number of notes\, but his approach is simply to make every note count. His improvisations have direction and meaning. Third\, and perhaps most impressively\, Peter’s guitar sound knocks your socks off. It’s clear\, warm\, and singing from top to bottom. Like a great grand piano whose eighty-eight keys sound equal and true\, Peter’s rich sonority is present no matter what register he plays in. \nWith Nick Peck piano\, Paul Rushka bass and Jesse Cahill drums
