SUMMARY:Erica Dee & Tonye Aganaba
DESCRIPTION:With playful melodies and an infectiously warm personality\, Vancouver-based vocalist/DJ/writer/producer Erica Dee brings it every time. Her magnetic presence and honey-laced voice is sure to get the beats bumping and the crowds moving. She is a Shambhala Festival mainstay and a captivating performer with deep roots in funk and soul. She’s toured with artists such as Mos Def\, Quest Love\, LiL Kim\, DJ Shadow and Beats Antique to name a few. \nWith Dave Mergens sax/keys\, Sean Mitchell drums\, Nate Drobner bass/keys\, Jena Fair vocals\, and Scott Verbeek guitar. \n\nSoul/Neo-Folk/Hiphop: that’s the genre defying style of singer-songwriter Tonye Aganaba. London-born and Vancouver-based\, Tonye’s music heals\, connects\, and draws the listener in—all while maintaining its wicked groove. With ‘90s hooks and R&B and pop melodies\, she’ll have you moving to the rhythm in no time. \nIn 2015 her trajectory was almost cut short by a multiple sclerosis diagnosis and a car accident where she fractured her spine in six places. But like a phoenix emerging from the proverbial ashes\, nothing can keep this queen down. Come prepared to dance and be inspired. \nWith Scott Verbeek guitar\, Mary Ancheta keyboards\, JeanSe Le Doujet bass\, Tim Proznick drums\, and Aaron Hamblin percussion. \n\n*Please note! RSVPs for this show have reached online capacity. An RSVP does not guarantee admittance. Come early (we advise to arrive between 7:00pm-7:30pm) and come prepared to dance! The venue is set up cabaret style and there will be more room to dance than there will be seats. \n\nPresented with

SUMMARY:Kendra Shank & John Stowell
DESCRIPTION:New York vocalist Kendra Shank and Portland guitarist John Stowell have been having musical conversations for three decades\, resulting in a deep synergy. “New York Conversations” – their co-led duo CD dubbed “magical…ingenious…original” by the Wall Street Journal – pushes boundaries with a mix of modern jazz originals\, reimagined standards\, bossas\, folk influences\, and improvised pieces. Stowell plays pianistic chords and rich unexpected harmonies on a colourful array of guitars: electric\, steel string acoustic\, nylon acoustic\, and fretless. In addition to her soulful interpretations of lyrics\, Shank employs electronic looping and effects to improvise multi-layered wordless collages in organic interplay with Stowell. \nShank – who has also performed with Abbey Lincoln\, Fred Hersch\, Geoffrey Keezer\, Frank Kimbrough\, and Matt Wilson – sounds like “sunlight shining through a stained-glass window\, her crystalline tone illuminating each song. Working her voice like a horn\, she phrases inventively\, whether crisp and sizzling or sensuously smoky” (Jazz Times). Stowell has also performed with Tom Harrell\, David Friesen\, David Liebman\, Lionel Hampton\, Art Farmer\, and Larry Coryell who declared “John Stowell plays jazz\, but he doesn’t use any of the clichés; he has an incredible originality. John is a master creator.” \nWith Kendra Shank voice/looper and John Stowell guitars.

SUMMARY:Black Art Jazz Collective
DESCRIPTION:Founded by some of contemporary jazz’s leading lights\, the Black Art Jazz Collective’s original compositions both highlight the impressive chops each member possesses and reveal the deeply entwined history of jazz and the African-American civil rights movement. \nAt its core is a modernism that conjures up the classic bands of Art Blakey and acoustic Miles Davis. But\, with contemporary soul-fuelled solos and locked-in rhythm\, the band is more likely to launch into a counterpoint riff or the spacious funk of hip-hop than the svelte lines of classic walking bass. The Black Art Jazz Collective delivers strong original tunes and purposeful\, form-hugging improvisation that keeps things looking forward rather than back \nWith Jeremy Pelt trumpet\, Wayne Escoffery saxophone\, James Burton III trombone\, Xavier Davis piano\, Corcoran Holt bass\, and Johnathan Blake drums. \nThis evening’s performance is supported by an anonymous donor.

SUMMARY:Dawn Pemberton with The Sharon Minemoto Trio
DESCRIPTION:Reel to Real Recordings is proud to announce the label’s co-inaugural release\, A Soulful Sunday: Live at the Left Bank\, a previously unissued live recording of the under-appreciated songstress Etta Jones featuring the Cedar Walton Trio with bassist Sam Jones and drummer Billy Higgins recorded on February 27\, 1972 at the Famous Ballroom in Baltimore\, Maryland. There has been no recorded documentation of Etta Jones during this stretch between 1971 and 1974\, so this never-before-heard recording fills in an important gap in Jones’s discography and showcases her in fine form. \nWith Dawn Pemberton vocals\, Sharon Minemoto piano\, John Lee bass\, and Joe Poole drums.
