SUMMARY:Chris Gestrin Quintet plays Filles de Kilimanjaro
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the release of ‘Filles de Kilimanjaro’ by Miles Davis in 1969\, Vancouver pianist\, composer and producer Chris Gestrin has assembled a superb quintet to perform this powerful\, mysterious\, and exciting music. The album can be seen as a transitional work between Davis’s mainly acoustic recordings with the Second Quintet and his later electric period. It is suffused in the heady abstraction of the 1960s\, but attentive to blues tonalities\, electronic textures\, and dancing rhythms of later jazz fusion. Davis apparently saw it as a transitional work for him\, as the album was the first in what would become a series of his releases to bear the subtitle “Directions in music by Miles Davis”. \nWith Chris Gestrin on Fender Rhodes and RMI Electric Pianos\, Brad Turner on trumpet\, Dave Say on tenor sax\, André Lachance on acoustic and electric on bass\, and Joe Poole on drums.

SUMMARY:Burrows/Morena Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Carlo Morena is one of Italy’s foremost jazz pianists and has performed and recorded with musicians such as Dave Liebman\, Bob Mintzer\, John Abercrombie\, and Charlie Mariano. Morena met Vancouver guitarist Jared Burrows and the two found that they share a similar approach to composition and harmony influenced by European composers such as Kenny Wheeler and Enrico Pieranunzi. Compositions by Burrows and Morena will be presented in company with Toronto drummer Joe Sorbara\, and Jared’s long-time collaborator\, Montana bass player\, Rob Kohler. Expect an evening of intimate\, chamber jazz aesthetic. \nABOUT JAZZ FOR BARB SERIES AND THE ITALIAN CULTURAL CENTRE \nBarbara Fudge was a passionate and loyal fan of jazz music. She could be seen all over the city at various jazz events talking and laughing with her friends\, mingling with the musicians and enjoying a glass of fine wine. Her personality and laugh were contagious and although no longer with us\, her larger than life spirit shines bright. We are so happy to be able to honour her with our ‘Jazz For Barb’ Series.

SUMMARY:Kendra Shank & John Stowell
DESCRIPTION:New York vocalist Kendra Shank and Portland guitarist John Stowell have been having musical conversations for three decades\, resulting in a deep synergy. “New York Conversations” – their co-led duo CD dubbed “magical…ingenious…original” by the Wall Street Journal – pushes boundaries with a mix of modern jazz originals\, reimagined standards\, bossas\, folk influences\, and improvised pieces. Stowell plays pianistic chords and rich unexpected harmonies on a colourful array of guitars: electric\, steel string acoustic\, nylon acoustic\, and fretless. In addition to her soulful interpretations of lyrics\, Shank employs electronic looping and effects to improvise multi-layered wordless collages in organic interplay with Stowell. \nShank – who has also performed with Abbey Lincoln\, Fred Hersch\, Geoffrey Keezer\, Frank Kimbrough\, and Matt Wilson – sounds like “sunlight shining through a stained-glass window\, her crystalline tone illuminating each song. Working her voice like a horn\, she phrases inventively\, whether crisp and sizzling or sensuously smoky” (Jazz Times). Stowell has also performed with Tom Harrell\, David Friesen\, David Liebman\, Lionel Hampton\, Art Farmer\, and Larry Coryell who declared “John Stowell plays jazz\, but he doesn’t use any of the clichés; he has an incredible originality. John is a master creator.” \nWith Kendra Shank voice/looper and John Stowell guitars.
