SUMMARY:Mimosa
DESCRIPTION:Mimosa presents an inspiring set of music\, much of it composed by band leader and pianist Anna Lumiere. Drawing on jazz\, French cabaret and Brazilian rhythms – Mimosa’s repertoire includes fast-paced sambas\, moody and eclectic waltzes and swinging standards with interesting arrangements. \nWith Rebecca Shoichet vocals\, Karen Graves sax/flute/vocals\, Anna Lumiere piano\, Conrad Black bass\, and Bernie Arai drums. \nABOUT JAZZ FOR BARB SERIES AND THE ITALIAN CULTURAL CENTRE \nBarbara Fudge was a passionate and loyal fan of jazz music. She could be seen all over the city at various jazz events talking and laughing with her friends\, mingling with the musicians and enjoying a glass of fine wine. Her personality and laugh were contagious and although no longer with us\, her larger than life spirit shines bright. We are so happy to be able to honour her with our ‘Jazz For Barb’ Series.

SUMMARY:Geoff Claridge Quartet: Benny Goodman Tribute Gig
DESCRIPTION:The Benny Goodman Quartet was one of the most electrifying small groups in the history of jazz\, breaking the racial gap and somehow holding its own every night paired against a full big band in the height of the swing era. Tonight’s performance showcases the original quartet’s gorgeous ballads and unparalleled energy\, whilst also encompassing the later talents of Charlie Christian and the distinctive arrangements of Benny’s Sextet. \nWith Geoff Claridge clarinet\, Josh Roberts guitar\, Nick Peck piano\, and Bernie Arai drums.

SUMMARY:Maya Rae & Terminal Station
DESCRIPTION:Maya Rae is one of Canada’s Top 35 Jazz Artists Under 35 (CBC)…. “A supremely gifted artist who is able to phrase like Sarah Vaughan but write a lyric like Joni Mitchell.” Maya has performed across Canada and has headlined the Vancouver\, Victoria\, Edmonton\, Calgary Jazz Festivals and Canadian Music Week in 2018. Maya’s debut album\, “Sapphire Birds” was released in 2017\, and she is currently working on her sophomore album of original music with Steve Dawson in Nashville\, Tennessee. Her music conveys messages of authenticity\, self-love\, hope and female empowerment. \nTerminal Station is a blues-rock band in the best sense of the word\, kicking the traditional blues sound into high gear. Their music is raw and exciting – full of fat bass lines\, explosive drumming\, risk taking guitar solos\, and impassioned vocals. The members of Terminal Station – Liam MacDonald drums\, Jeremy Holmes bass\, Scott Smith vocals/guitar – have been key players in Vancouver’s blues and roots scene for the better part of a decade. They have played with Vancouver artists such as Barney Bentall\, Steve Dawson\, Rich Hope\, Ridley Bent\, Buckman Coe\, and Jim Byrnes – as well as American artists such as John Hammond and Alvin Youngblood Hart.

SUMMARY:Miles Okazaki’s Trickster
DESCRIPTION:“complex & grooving. **** (four stars)” —Downbeat \nGuitarist Miles Okazaki’s approach to the guitar is described by the New York Times as “utterly contemporary\, free from the expectations of what it means to play a guitar in a group setting — not just in jazz\, but any kind.” \nHis fourth album of original compositions\, Trickster was released on Pi Recordings in 2017\, making best-of lists on Pop Matters and the Los Angeles Times\, and was an Editor’s Pick at both Downbeat and JazzTimes. The Brooklyn-based Okazaki’s versatile virtuosity has seen him partnered up with such wide-ranging artists as Steve Coleman\, Kenny Barron\, Vijay Ayer\, Donny McCaslin and Mark Guiliana and Mary Halvorson\, but his intricate\, complex\, and individualistic compositions seem fresh and enjoyable\, while still showcasing the incredible skill of this crack band. \nWith Anthony Tidd bass\, and Sean Rickman drums\, and Matt Mitchell piano.
