SUMMARY:Gordon Grdina's Nomad Trio with Matt Mitchell and Jim Black
DESCRIPTION:Gordon Grdina is “the rare jazz guitarist who plays a lot of notes\, yet manages to find a way not to waste them” (New York Music Daily). He also spearheads—and absolutely nails—a dizzying number of creative collaborations with heavy-hitters like Matthew Shipp\, Mats Gustafsson\, and Marc Ribot. Here\, the JUNO Award winner creates edgy\, intricate\, and insistent sounds with pianist Matt Mitchell (John Hollenbeck\, Tim Berne) and drummer Jim Black (Human Feel\, AlasNoAxis)\, two massively influential legends of the downtown New York scene who share with Grdina “an attunement to radical possibility at any moment\, and the expansive technical vocabulary to justify any digression” (WBGO).

SUMMARY:Dawn Pemberton + Francis Baptiste
DESCRIPTION:DAWN PEMBERTON \nVibrant\, honest\, and powerful\, Dawn Pemberton’s voice beats a soulful path from gospel and R&B to jazz\, funk\, and a whole world of music. A collaborator with The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer and Khari Wendell McClelland\, her deep musicality\, “honey-soaked pipes” (Vancouver Sun) and irresistible verve make Dawn the new queen of Canadian soul! \nPresented in association with Full Circle: First Nations Performance \nFRANCIS BAPTISTE \nEchoes of early-2000s indie-rock inhabit Francis Baptiste’s arching\, melodic debut album Snəqsilxʷ (A). From the Osoyoos Indian Band\, the Vancouver-based singer/songwriter features songs in N̓syilxčn̓\, an endangered language spoken fluently by roughly 50 people. For Baptiste\, his journey in learning the language—and working to preserve and promote this vital heritage—began with Snəqsilxʷ\, and is redoubled with each affecting live performance. \nPresented in association with Full Circle: First Nations Performance \nSponsored in part by CHMC Granville Island

SUMMARY:François Houle RECODER 4tet with Gordon Grdina\, Mark Helias & Gerry Hemingway
DESCRIPTION:Experimental music bible The Wire noted that “one reason why Canadian clarinetist François Houle’s compositions roar with such fierce and indefatigable energy lies in the personnel and instrumentation he’s assembled to play them”\, and with his new RECODER 4tet\, he’s brought together an absolute dream team. Drummer Gerry Hemingway first captured Houle’s ear on the legendary 1980s Braxton Quartet recordings\, while bassist Mark Helias has performed with everyone from Ed Blackwell to Tony Malaby. Joining these two monster international musicians is Francois’ long-time collaborator\, JUNO Award-winning Vancouver guitarist Gordon Grdina.

SUMMARY:Sam Tudor + Kandle featuring Kendel Carson and Debra-Jean Creelman
DESCRIPTION:SAM TUDOR \nThe Georgia Straight calls guitarist/vocalist Sam Tudor “a gem with a penchant for everything left field.” From hushed\, confessional tones to cathartic intensity\, Tudor’s psychedelia-tinged pop is “beautifully self-aware\, sonically interesting\, and masterful” (Beatroute). The core group of Tudor\, Jasper Wrinch bass\, and Yunjin Claire Lee synthesizer is rounded out by a shifting collective of genre-resistant players who bring new energy to every performance. \nKANDLE feat. KENDEL CARSON AND DEBRA-JEAN CREELMAN \nWalking a zigzag line through the annals of outlaw country and the unadorned roots of rock ’n’ roll\, three of the West Coast’s finest folk witches convene for sublime spellcasting. The combined voices of Kandle (who has collaborated with some of Canada’s finest songwriters\, including Sam Roberts and Coeur de pirate)\, Debra-Jean Creelman (ex-Mother Mother)\, and Kendel Carson (Alan Doyle) constitute a single exquisite instrument\, yielding a sound that’s raw\, vulnerable\, and transfixing.

SUMMARY:Big Lazy
DESCRIPTION:“Simultaneously noir and pastoral\, gothic and modern\, Big Lazy conjures images from big sky country to seedy back rooms with cinematic clarity.” – Kosmos \nNew York-based Big Lazy’s music falls somewhere between sultry lounge-jazz and fractured surf-pop. The slinky\, smoky vibe evokes film-noir soundtracks\, dark alleys and finger-snapping beat poets. Lead guitarist Stephen Ulrich is the composer for the HBO series Bored to Death. The New Yorker calls his music “stunningly beautiful.” With Andrew Hall bass and Yuvall Lion drums. \n“Avant twang\, Americana noir\, garage chamber music\, whatever you’d like to label composer/guitarist Stephen Ulrich’s NYC-based trio Big Lazy\, one thing is undeniable—the vibe is unforgettable.” Dusty Wright\, Culture Catch

With their new duo album—nominated for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year at this year’s JUNOs—this pairing of two of Canada’s most imaginative\, decorated musicians spotlights their telepathic co-writes and creative re-framings of everything from Bruce Cockburn to Nina Simone\, while adding subtly otherworldly layers of electronic intrigue. \nThanks to the Canada Council for the Arts

SUMMARY:Dave Rempis (solo)
DESCRIPTION:Saxophonist Dave Rempis burst onto the late-’90s Chicago scene with The Vandermark 5 and has remained one of modern jazz’s most prolific players\, leading multiple distinct projects and working with the likes of Michael Zerang\, Nels Cline\, and Tim Daisy. Influenced by broad studies in ethnomusicology and contemporary composition philosophies\, he’s equally driven by a love for unabashedly expressive yelps\, screeches\, and squeals. \nMultifaceted drummer Kenton Loewen (Peregrine Falls) cut his teeth in free jazz\, indie-folk\, and DIY punk—and my\, what sharp teeth they are! He shares a wildfire chemistry with bassist Tommy Babin (Haram\, Benzene)\, whose playing exerts an irresistible gravitational pull. \nJuly 2 • Roundhouse – Studio (Dave Rempis Workshop) @ 1:30pm • FREE

But in the ever-evolving\, collaborative\, radically telepathic trio Thumbscrew—which celebrates its 10th year as a working band—their distinctive musical personalities perfectly coalesce in intricate compositions and improvisations that push\, pull\, and pin-drop at their will. “The barrage of riffs is both epic and melodic\, the low end beefy and the percussion massive. Expect nothing less than magic from these three avant purveyors” (The Village Voice).

SUMMARY:Samara Joy w/ Pasquale Grasso Trio
DESCRIPTION:That someone so young can so completely inhabit the timeless classics of the Great American Songbook borders on the supernatural. NPR calls her debut album “imposing”\, the JazzTimes critics poll just named her Best New Artist\, and she won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition three years ago\, at age 19. Velvet-voiced rising star Samara Joy is scarily good—and the hairs on the backs of our necks are all the better for it! She’s joined by Italian-born NYC guitarist Pasquale Grosso—who Pat Metheny recently called “the best guitar player I’ve heard in maybe my entire life”—and his trio-mates Sam Edwards bass and Keith Balla drums.
