The trio’s melodic abstraction was showcased on 2012’s I’ve Been Ringing You\, a collection of intense and sophisticated reinterpretations of standards\, rich with free interplay and quiet rumination. \nDave King is one of the most celebrated drummers in modern jazz. His contributions to the Minneapolis and New York jazz scenes are incalculable\, and his imagination and boundless enthusiasm behind (and around) the drum set are singular and stunning. Dave has recorded or performed with such luminaries as Bill Frisell\, Joshua Redman\, Jeff Beck\, Tim Berne\, Mason Jennings\, Mark Morris Dance Company\, Meat Beat Manifesto\, and many others. \nMatt Mitchell is a New York-based pianist and composer interested in the intersections of various strains of acoustic\, electric\, composed\, and improvised new music. He has garnered rave reviews for his latest release førage\, a unique tribute to Tim Berne’s\, released on Berne’s Screwgun Records. \nBilly Peterson is one of the premier bass players in the world\, as well as being a successful producer and arranger. He’s been the bassist for the Steve Miller Band for 15 years and is also the musical director for a cooking show which is produced in the south of France\, soon to be seen in North America.

That’s how I view myself. An acoustic guitarist primarily\, who can play in these different fields… Growing up I was really fascinated by Jim Hall\, Charlie Christian\, Django. That’s my introduction. I wouldn’t say I have a strong bebop guitar background. I have more of a modern jazz guitar background.” \nHis latest project\, Arclight (Mack Avenue)\, shows off that early fascination\, with interpretations of pre-bop jazz and a switch to the electric guitar. “I think of it as the pre-bebop generation\, when country music and jazz and swing were in this weird wild-west period\,” says Lage. \nWith Eric Doob drums and Jorge Roeder bass.

Waiting list/standing room tickets may be available at the door starting at 7pm. \nGordon Grdina has managed to place a finger in every corner of the jazz/world fusion room. —Pop Matters  \nComplex\, intricate\, idiosyncratic\, and rockin’—those are the adjectives that best describe this cross-border collaboration between Vancouver guitarist Gordon Grdina\, and New York’s Matt Mitchell piano\, and Jim Black drums. Juno Award winner Grdina’s compositions give the nod to 20th century classical composition\, rock\, free jazz\, and third stream\, and this trio promises to explore those ideas at their highest levels. \nGordon Grdina is known for his incredible versatility and ability to bring a fresh and edgy vibe to any ensemble he joins or forms. His musical output is diverse\, including 10-piece Arabic/avant-garde ensemble Haram\, the intricate GG Quartet and cinematic GG Septet\, high-energy collective Grdina/Houle/Loewen\, free-punk duo Peregrine Falls\, and contemporary Persian-influenced ensembles Qalandar and The Marrow. \nJim Black is a legend in the downtown New York jazz and improv scene and a world-renowned drummer. His most recent Vancouver appearances include gigs with Endangered Blood\, Banda de los Muertos\, and Human Feel. \nMatt Mitchell is a mainstay on the New York jazz scene playing with internationally acclaimed ensembles like the Dave Douglas Quintet and John Hollenbeck’s Large Ensemble. This is Matt’s third visit to Vancouver this season following a solo appearance and a fall show with Tim Berne’s Snakeoil. \n

Things are happening out west.” — CBC Radio \nSteve Kozak has been a mainstay on the west coast blues scene since the mid-eighties. Backed by his some of Vancouver’s top musicians Kozak has built a reputation as the go to guy in Vancouver for tasty blues guitar\, who has shared the stage with the likes of Duke Robillard and James Harman. Kozak won a prestigious Maple Blues Award for New Artist or Group of the Year in 2012 and the group was nominated for a 2017 Western Canadian Music Award as Blues Artist of the Year by Break Out West.

DESCRIPTION:A creative composer and improviser\, Natasha draws influence from a wide canon of musicians\, notably the music of Norma Winstone\, Fred Hersch\, and Wayne Shorter. Natasha’s original music combines her love and appreciation for the jazz tradition and the art of free improvised music. She is currently working on her first album set to be released in early 2018.
