SUMMARY:Allie Lynn King\, Nate McBride\, and Kenton Loewen

SUMMARY:Early Show: Big Fate
DESCRIPTION:Born from the fiery furnace of Mr. James Calvin Thompson\, Bigfate combines their frothy Jungle Jazz Fusion with an engaging spirit and fresh perspective on composition and groove. Navigating by heart and feel\, this instrumental groove engine gives you something familiar and simultaneously\, something passionately original. \nAmidst darkened secret laboratories under extreme conditions whilst studying the ancient texts\, Bigfate has concocted from rare earth materials some truly unknown Alchemy. When held to the light you’ll see the history of the stars unfold and time freed from its gravity. When held to the ear you hear the sound of love from the inner workings of the earth. When immersed in water\, purification. When held to flame\, it eliminates evil and sickness.

SUMMARY:Nubya Garcia
DESCRIPTION:Nubya Garcia isn’t an artist you can easily classify. Is it jazz? Sure\, the London-born saxophonist\, composer and bandleader grew up studying the genre under noted pianist Nikki Yeoh at Camden Music. But it isn’t until you listen to albums like 2020’s Source and 2024’s Odyssey that you hear broader creativity shining through: it’s jazz\, classical\, dub\, R&B\, and whatever else Garcia wants to convey. It all comes from a place of exploration and self-study\, of wanting to do all the things across all disciplines while ignoring arbitrary boxes that don’t fit. \nGarcia’s 2024 sophomore album Odyssey (Concord Jazz) is a majestic feat on which she blends orchestral arrangements with R&B\, jazz\, broken beat\, and dub\, resulting in a grand\, nuanced record that feels airy and celestial without sacrificing the groove. It’s a deeply personal offering about her trek to falling back in love with musical composition over the past four years. \nHer 2020 debut album Source was released via Concord Jazz to massive critical acclaim\, an NPR Tiny Desk Concert\, a Pitchfork “Best New Music” review and a Rolling Stone “Album of the Month” mention. The New York Times called it “a sweeping set of jazz with Afro-Caribbean influences that funnels a life’s worth of experiences into an hourlong listen.” The album entered the UK charts in the Top 30\, and Garcia was one of just three artists selected to perform live at Glastonbury’s 2020 Experience\, which aired on the BBC to thousands of viewers. Source was also nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize\, an award given to the best album from the UK or Ireland. \nCalling Garcia’s latest release “a veritable quest of a record\,” Pitchfork raved that “Odyssey isn’t just full of ideas; it’s full of good ideas—rich\, challenging\, and inspiring in their largess.” \nFronting an incandescent quartet\, Nubya Garcia is unquestionably “one of the leading lights of the new young London jazz scene” (Jazzwise). \nThis is an accessible venue. If assistance is required please contact: boxoffice@coastaljazz.ca \nPlease Note: Seating is limited with a mix of seating and standing room. Arrive early for seating. Box Office & Lobby open at 6:30 PM; House opens at 7:00 PM; the show starts at 7:30 PM \nWe are grateful for the support of the Alan and Gwendoline Pyatt Foundation.

SUMMARY:Christine Jensen Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Canadian saxophonist and composer Christine Jensen has lent a distinct voice to the creative jazz scene of the past twenty-five years. Her jazz orchestra recordings Treelines and Habitat were JUNO Award-winners for Jazz Album of the Year (group) in 2011 and 2014\, respectively\, while her third jazz orchestra album Harbour (Justin-Time Records) is nominated in this year’s signature celebration of Canadian talent. \nQuite a regular at the JUNOs\, her dynamic and expressive Quartet album Day Moon won for Jazz Album of the Year (solo) in 2024. Inspired by seeing a full moon as the sun was rising during the global pandemic\, it’s an apt image for a suite of music that taps into deep reservoirs of emotion while keeping “enough uplift and whimsy in the playing to remedy any unsought melancholy. The welcome catharsis in Jensen’s vision expands both ways” (Downbeat). \nJensen is constantly in motion as an improviser\, composer and bandleader. A Downbeat Critic’s Poll Rising Star winner in multiple categories (Big Band\, Arranger\, and Soprano Saxophonist)\, she’s performed with Jeremy Pelt\, Phil Dwyer\, Donny McCaslin\, Swedish pianist Maggi Olin\, and scores of other creative jazz greats\, including her sister Ingrid Jensen and their Infinitude ensemble featuring Ben Monder. \nHer Quartet features inventive first-call Montréal players in drummer Jim Doxas and bassist Adrian Vedady\, as well as NYC-based pianist Gary Versace\, whose remarkable resumé includes work with John Scofield\, John Abercrombie\, and Maria Schneider. \n“Always a compelling writer\, capable of strong lyricism combined with harmonic invention and plenty of narrative twists and turns\, Jensen’s music not only impresses on a first encounter\, but reveals more with each and every listen.” – All About Jazz \nThis is an accessible venue.

SUMMARY:Vancouver Jazz Orchestra Plays Dave Robbins Happy Faces
DESCRIPTION:Under the direction of saxophonist/clarinetist James Danderfer\, the Vancouver Jazz Orchestra (VJO) features an array of the city’s finest jazz artists. The VJO is dedicated to the presentation of classic big band music as well as a focus on Vancouver composers\, past and present. Recent performances have featured international artists such as Jeremy Pelt and Seamus Blake and 2025 promises to be the VJO’s biggest year yet\, starting off with this unique presentation. \nThis evening will highlight a seminal figure in the legacy of large ensemble jazz in Vancouver\, in Canada\, and beyond: Dave Robbins. As a trombonist\, bandleader\, arranger\, composer\, and teacher\, Robbins made invaluable contributions to the fine art of big band and jazz orchestra performance. Shockingly\, no recordings of large ensembles led by Robbins have been available for years; instead\, studio and live recordings were passed privately between enthusiasts. That was the case until now\, with the release of the album Happy Faces on Reel to Real Recordings. Join the VJO as they celebrate! \nWith Michael Kim\, Brad Turner\, Thomas Marriott\, Brian Harding\, Ellen Marple\, Dawn Haylett\, James Danderfer\, Mike Braverman\, Mia Gazley\, Sharon Minemoto\, André Lachance\, & Dave Robbins.

SUMMARY:Open Thread
DESCRIPTION:Open Thread—the innovative Melbourne-based ensemble of cellist Peggy Lee\, saxophonist Julien Wilson\, guitarist Theo Carbo\, and drummer/percussionist Dylan van der Schyff—weaves anthemic melodies\, diverse rhythmic structures\, and ear-awakening improvised soundscapes into an idiosyncratic collective identity. \nThe group was sparked by Peggy Lee’s move from Vancouver to Melbourne in 2023 and her desire to connect with local musicians (in addition to longtime collaborator van der Schyff). This led to a gathering of attuned talents\, and a leap into the rich\, joyful possibilities of a collective sound that’s as challenging as it is rewarding. \nWith compositions from each member alongside open-eared\, emotionally far-ranging improvisations\, the group calls equally on deep vocabularies of extended techniques and their shared\, playfully experimental love of melody and song forms. “The quartet dabbles in discordant soundscapes. But overall\, Open Thread conjures a delicate sound world\, asking that listeners put aside distractions and give themselves over to these carefully wrought melodies\, thronged with strange beauty and otherness.” – Rhythms Magazine

Dane had great success with a world premiere concert series tour of “Christmas with Sinatra” in 2018 in Victoria\, Nanaimo\, and Campbell River on Vancouver Island\, and in 2019 in 6 different citites throughout the lower mainland bringing his love of vintage music\, the big band era\, and the iconic style of Frank Sinatra to a Christmas setting which received high praise from concert goers and critics alike. Recently he wrote\, co-produced\, co-directed with his lovely partner Mandy Rushton (the ‘M’ in MAD JAZZ LIVE)\, and starred in a “Bio-Musical” of the life of Frank Sinatra entitled “Ol’Blue Eyes” which was arrranged and scored by Dean Thiessen and a six piece little big band. Dane will be accompanied by his long-time friend and collaborator Aaron Pang (The ‘A’ in MAD JAZZ LIVE). \nAaron Pang is a classically trained jazz pianist from Vancouver\, BC. After graduating from the University of Victoria with a Bachelor of Music\, Aaron has delved deep into the Vancouver music scene\, playing in countless bands spanning multiple genres from blues\, funk\, soul\, indie\, country\, pop\, and hip hop. After performing numerous shows for almost a decade\, he has returned his focus to his dearest musical love\, jazz. Since their inception in 2020\, he has been the arranger and pianist for MAD Jazz LIVE\, performing all over BC and through online streaming platforms. Aaron hopes to continue entertaining communities\, family\, and friends\, and inspire the livelihood of those around him with his music. \nMAD JAZZ LIVE will be doing a special live concert at Coquette for this year’s Coastal Jazz Festival\, doing a LIVE ALBUM RECREATION of the iconic Francis Albert Sinatra And Antonio Carlos Jobim Album recorded in 1967 on Sinatra’s personal record label Reprise. This concert will truly be a ONE OF A KIND experience you will not want to miss out on wether you are a a die hard Jazz or Bossa Nova fan\, or just a music\, and fine French food lover in general!
