SUMMARY:Cory Weeds/Julian MacDonough Quintet Play the music of Tina Brooks
DESCRIPTION:Best known for his work for Blue Note Records between 1958 and 1961\, saxophonist Tina Brooks recorded primarily as a sideman with Kenny Burrell\, Freddie Hubbard\, Jackie McLean\, Freddie Redd\, and Jimmy Smith. But he also recorded five sessions of his own for Blue Note. The first session was in the spring of 1958 with promising young trumpeter Lee Morgan alongside seasoned professionals such as Sonny Clark\, Doug Watkins\, and Art Blakey. Despite the calibre of the players\, Minor Move was not released for more than two decades and after Brooks had died. Three of his four other sessions (Street Singer\, Back to the Tracks\, and The Waiting Game) also did not appear during his lifetime. The exception was True Blue\, a session recorded in 1960 with Freddie Hubbard\, Duke Jordan\, Sam Jones\, and Art Taylor. \nIn this special tribute an all-star quintet recreate the music from across all Tina’s recordings featuring Cory Weeds tenor saxophone\, Chris Davis trumpet\, John Hansen piano\, Michael Glynn bass\, and Julian MacDonough drums.

The trio’s melodic abstraction was showcased on 2012’s I’ve Been Ringing You\, a collection of intense and sophisticated reinterpretations of standards\, rich with free interplay and quiet rumination. \nDave King is one of the most celebrated drummers in modern jazz. His contributions to the Minneapolis and New York jazz scenes are incalculable\, and his imagination and boundless enthusiasm behind (and around) the drum set are singular and stunning. Dave has recorded or performed with such luminaries as Bill Frisell\, Joshua Redman\, Jeff Beck\, Tim Berne\, Mason Jennings\, Mark Morris Dance Company\, Meat Beat Manifesto\, and many others. \nMatt Mitchell is a New York-based pianist and composer interested in the intersections of various strains of acoustic\, electric\, composed\, and improvised new music. He has garnered rave reviews for his latest release førage\, a unique tribute to Tim Berne’s\, released on Berne’s Screwgun Records. \nBilly Peterson is one of the premier bass players in the world\, as well as being a successful producer and arranger. He’s recorded original material\, standards\, bluegrass\, spontaneous improvisations\, folk\, jazz\, film scores and classic pop—and received critical and fan acclaim for all of it\, all before his 30th birthday. \nLage told allaboutjazz.com\, “As a player\, I feel I can move in the cracks between jazz and folk and blues guitar. That’s how I view myself. An acoustic guitarist primarily\, who can play in these different fields… Growing up I was really fascinated by Jim Hall\, Charlie Christian\, Django. That’s my introduction. I wouldn’t say I have a strong bebop guitar background. I have more of a modern jazz guitar background.” \nHis latest project\, Arclight (Mack Avenue)\, shows off that early fascination\, with interpretations of pre-bop jazz and a switch to the electric guitar. “I think of it as the pre-bebop generation\, when country music and jazz and swing were in this weird wild-west period\,” says Lage. \nWith Eric Doob drums and Jorge Roeder bass.

DESCRIPTION:Louisiana Joymakers made its debut appearance at Frankie’s Jazz Club last year and it’s great to have the band return to our stage to play a mix of well known and some obscure songs from the early days of jazz. Jim Armstrong fronts the band on trumpet and vocals with Ben Henriques on reeds and Clive Collins on trombone. The rock solid rhythm section has Scott Robinson on drums\, Steve Toren on tuba\, and Mike Hobbs on guitar and banjo. Expect your toes to be tapping within the first tune!
