SUMMARY:Maria Ho Quartet
DESCRIPTION:With a smile in her voice\, Maria Ho’s impeccable articulation and precise diction captivate through a musical breeze of swinging standards\, Brazilian rhythms and romantic ballads inspired by Nat King Cole\, Freddie Cole\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Nancy Wilson\, Marc Jordan\, and Karrin Allyson. As a vocalist and bandleader who has recorded with Richie Cole\, Warren Vaché\, George Robert\, Krishna Booker\, Ian McDougall\, and Phil Dwyer\, her two albums Where or When and Smile have received rotation airplay on jazz stations in New York\, Denver\, Denmark\, and Italy. “Just a Touch” was chosen as bumper music on Coast to Coast AM. Songs from the début album were featured on WAMC/Northeast Public Radio\, CBC Radio across Canada\, DR P1 and DR P8 Jazz in Denmark\, plus Saturday mornings on KUVO in Denver. In July 2014\, Maria was interviewed by Jazz Caravan on KUVO followed by a sold-out performance at Dazzle Jazz in Denver. In August 2015\, she recorded a station ID for KUVO and appeared on Breakfast Jazz to discuss her second album\, Smile. Maria is now working on completing her third album. Maria is delighted to perform with her quartet featuring Michael Creber piano\, Paul Rushka bass\, and Dave Robbins drummer.

DESCRIPTION:With a performance history spanning more than two decades\, Pearl Django endures as one of the most highly regarded Hot Club style groups working today. Although the band’s roots are firmly in the music made famous by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli\, its extensive repertoire includes traditional jazz classics and original compositions. Pearl Django has performed at festivals\, dances and nightspots throughout the US\, Canada and Europe. They have played at the prestigious Festival Django Reinhardt in Samois sur Seine\, and have been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered. Pearl Django are celebrating the group’s 13th release\, With Friends Like These\, an all original recording that features their composing and arranging talents that both honours and expands the gypsy jazz/hot club magic of Stephane and Django. DESCRIPTION:Saxophonist Mike Allen and his band perform new and classic compositions by Canadian guitar legend Sonny Greenwich. As a member of Sonny Greenwich’s bands in the 1990s\, Mike’s playing first began to crystallize into what Victoria Times columnist Joe Blake called “organically constructed tangents of inspired improvisation… economical statements with an emotive power.” Sonny’s musical influence and friendship continue to be a great source of inspiration and Mike is proud to dedicate this night to a celebration of Sonny Greenwich and his legacy. On the Canadian side\, recent Order of Canada recipient P.J. Perry (Edmonton) joins a stellar line-up of Vancouver players including Steve Kaldestad tenor\, Chris Davis trumpet\, Rod Murray trombone\, Chris Gestrin piano\, Paul Rushka bass\, and Jesse Cahill drums. Vancouver-based composer/arranger Jill Townsend is writing special arrangements for the project.

DESCRIPTION:“Giulia Valle is a rara avis on the Spanish jazz scene… Driven by a strong sense of discipline and an undeniable natural talent\, Valle has established herself as a unique voice on the contemporary and avant-garde jazz panorama.” –JazzTimes  \nBassist and composer Giulia Valle was born in San Remo\, Italy but raised in Barcelona where she began studying piano at eight years old before discovering jazz just a few short years later via artists such as Charles Mingus and Ahmad Jamal. As a teenager Valle became deeply engaged with the upright bass\, studying at the conservatory in Liceu\, at the Taller de Músics\, and taking private lessons with the renowned Mario Rossy (brother of Jorge Rossy). Beginning in the late 1990s\, she started travelling to New York\, meeting great musicians and studying with people such as Ben Street and Bruce Barth. \nAt age 27\, she created her first ensemble\, the Giulia Valle Group\, with a cast of musicians from the Barcelona scene. Shortly thereafter\, she recorded an album with American musicians Jason Lindner\, Bill McHenry\, and John McNeil. Beginning in 2008\, her ensemble began touring widely around Europe\, performing dynamic sets at prestigious venues. During this time the ensemble was discovered by Jeff Levenson of Blue Note Records who immediately fell in love with her music and invited and facilitated additional tour dates for her ensemble at renowned venues and festivals in North America\, including the Blue Note NY Festival\, SFJazz Festival\, Seattle’s Earshot Festival\, TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival\, Ottawa Jazz Festival\, and the Montreal Jazz Festival\, among others. \nShe has released seven albums to date\, writing extensively for all the ensembles with which she performs and is known for bringing out the unique talents of each of her collaborators. Giulia’s music is not easy to describe; it must be experienced. As a composer and performer\, she uses her distinct voice to explore both the deepest corners of lyricism and the experimental edge of rhythmic concepts\, letting her own folklore guide the way.

DESCRIPTION:Vibraphonist Craig Scott teams up again with tenor saxophonist Cory Weeds to present selections from the Milt Jackson\, McCoy Tyner album In A New Setting. The Scott/Weeds collaboration\, the acclaimed Introducing The Craig Scott Quintet on Cellar Live spent nine weeks on the Jazz Week Charts\, and presented music that both Craig and Cory drew from Ray Brown\, Cedar Walton\, and other great bebop players and composers as conceptual influences. When Milt Jackson collaborated with pianist McCoy Tyner\, the result was a more post-bop approach in both harmonic and melodic concept. Paying homage to this landmark 1964 album\, Cory and Craig are joined by pianist Chris Gestrin\, bassist Paul Rushka\, and drummer Jesse Cahill.
