SUMMARY:Early Show: Daniel Lew
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Lew is a singer-songwriter with a mission to uplift the world. 10 years ago\, he suddenly lost 90% of hearing in his left ear and developed tinnitus. This taught him about the fragility of life\, and now he sings and plays everyday as if it’s the last time. He hopes his music and journey through adversity can be a source of inspiration for others. His folk-pop songs have been called a self-help book due to their introspective nature.

SUMMARY:Makaya McCraven
DESCRIPTION:A cutting-edge drummer\, composer\, producer\, and sonic collagist\, Makaya McCraven is a multitalented force whose inventive process and intuitive\, cinematic style defies categorization. Blurring the boundaries of jazz and electronic music\, his “hypnotic\, wholly new and radically communal” (Pitchfork) 2018 album Universal Beings—featuring Shabaka Hutchings\, Tomeka Reid\, Jeff Parker\, and other greats—made ‘Best-of’ lists in the New York Times\, Billboard\, NPR\, The Guardian\, and Pitchfork. 2021’s Deciphering the Message saw him sampling and engaging with the venerable Blue Note Records catalogue. His newest album\, In These Times\, is the triumphant result of a project more than seven years in the making—the album he’s been trying to make since he started making records. \nA collection of polytemporal compositions inspired as much by broader cultural struggles as it is by McCraven’s personal experience as a product of a multinational\, working class Chicago musician community\, In These Times encompasses all he’s lived through\, while also pushing the music forward. Stereogum called it “a beautiful\, beautiful record…deeper and more lush than anything he’s done to date”\, while Paste Magazine said that “In These Times is like oxygen in the very lungs of jazz\, and McCraven’s rhythms like its heartbeat.” \nMcCraven will be joined by Junius Paul bass\, Josh Johnson alto saxophone\, and Joel Ross vibes.

SUMMARY:Cory Weeds Quintet with guest Tyler Henderson
DESCRIPTION:Cory Weeds is an expressive saxophonist whose warm\, impactful sound is firmly rooted in jazz tradition. Jazz aficionados know that Weeds keeps the flame of classic swing burning bright in Vancouver and beyond. SUMMARY:Jimi
DESCRIPTION:As a 24 year old Canadian singer-songwriter/producer\, Julia Nicholson balances storytelling\, soulful guitar lines\, and an intimacy of voice with a musical maturity beyond her years. \nInspired by a childhood listening to Fleetwood Mac\, Bill Withers\, Etta James\, and the Eagles’ records\, her debut album exhibits musicality and artistic clarity unparalleled by her contemporaries in the pop world. Since releasing her first self titled EP at age 15 some of her highlighted accomplishments have been recording sessions in LA\, showcases and songwriting camps in Nashville\, opening a 10\,000 seat show in Singapore\, to recording and establishing herself as a co-producer for her debut album What A Feeling in Toronto with Ari Rhodes and Mikhail Cronin. \nListen closely to her latest single\, I Got You\, With impeccable attention to production and dynamics inspired by the legends of pop\, soul\, and R&B\, Julia’s latest work mediates that delicate line between pushing the sonic boundaries of genre and performance\, positioning her firmly among the musical greats of Canada’s pop and songwriting worlds.

SUMMARY:Scott Hills
DESCRIPTION:Scotty Hills is a singer-songwriter from Saskatoon whose sound blends country blues with soulful sophistication. SUMMARY:Bill Frisell Trio with Thomas Morgan & Rudy Royston
DESCRIPTION:Bill Frisell’s career as a guitarist and composer has spanned more than 40 years and many celebrated recordings\, whose catalogue has been cited by Downbeat as “the best recorded output of the decade.” His first appearance at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival was in 1986\, and we’re thrilled to host his return for our 40th anniversary. \nIn the trio format he’s favoured throughout his career\, Frisell has always projected an orchestral scope — through his remarkably complete sense of harmony\, a unique gift for melodies that remain with you long after a performance\, and a keen feel for how dynamic range can be used to convey emotion. But on his new double album\, his fourth release for Blue Note Records\, he makes those symphonic evocations a reality. Produced by Lee Townsend\, Orchestras documents two inspired concert-hall engagements arranged by Michael Gibbs for Frisell’s long-standing trio with bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Rudy Royston: one featuring the nearly 60-piece Brussels Philharmonic\, conducted by Alexander Hanson; and one with the 11-piece Umbria Jazz Orchestra\, under the musical direction of Manuele Morbidini. \nAs he’s often done over the past four decades\, Frisell uses a straightforward concept and a familiar songbook to bring about stirring revelations. To start\, these 16 tracks showcase a level of comfort and interactivity that far transcends the vast majority of “with strings” projects on the jazz record shelf. Gibbs’ sweeping\, singular orchestration\, with its shades of Gil Evans and landmark film scores\, moves nimbly within and around the trio’s telepathic rapport\, and Frisell’s shimmering trademark tone melds gorgeously with strings and brass.
