SUMMARY:Mary Ancheta’s MAQkestra Performs the Music of Betty Davis
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver keyboardist Ancheta has long been influenced by Betty Davis\, a crucial voice of 1970s funk. Ancheta’s six-piece band performs the flamboyant diva’s gritty\, sexually-charged\, incredibly funky tunes – mostly from seminal albums They Say I’m Different and Nasty Gal – fronted by supreme vocalists Dawn Pemberton\, Leo D.E. Johnson and Krystle Dos Santos. A sell-out sensation when it debuted last year\, this R&B-funk spectacular is not to be missed. With Dominic Conway saxophone\, Feven Kidane trumpet\, Matt Reid bass\, Vinicius Cavalieri guitar\, Paul Clark drums. \nPresented in association with North Shore Jazz.

SUMMARY:Kneebody
DESCRIPTION:“Putting a finger on a band like Kneebody is a bit like raising it to the wind. At any given moment\, the group’s artistic inclinations can whip in an unpredictable direction” — Wall Street Journal \nIn their two-decade history\, Kneebody has created a genre all its own\, and a cueing system that allows them to change tempo\, key\, style\, and more in an instant. Touching on post-bop\, 70s jazz fusion\, 20th-century minimalism\, and hints of head-bobbing 90’s hip-hop\, the Grammy-nominated group brings explosive rock energy and nuanced ensemble playing to their compositions\, and no-hold-barred adventurism to their improv. \nKneebody is keyboardist Adam Benjamin\, trumpeter Shane Endsley\, saxophonist Ben Wendel\, and Nate Wood on bass and drums (simultaneously!). \nSince their 2005 debut on Dave Douglas’ Greenleaf Music Label\, Kneebody have released critically-acclaimed albums on labels like Colortone\, Concord\, Motéma\, Winter & Winter\, Edition\, and Brainfeeder. Their brand-new album\, Reach (on GroundUP)\, coalesces the unmistakable sounds Kneebody have cultivated over two decades\, while boldly pointing towards new directions for the veteran collective.

SUMMARY:Jack Garton
DESCRIPTION:Steeped in the solitude of the mountains and islands of the Pacific Northwest\, raised in the boisterous and irreverent East Vancouver arts community\, Jack Garton’s music is a dance party for the vulnerable at heart. In the lineage of Weird and Wonderful Canadian songwriters Leonard Cohen\, k.d.Lang\, Corb Lund and Geoff Berner\, Garton’s songs alchemize brokenness and pride\, and celebrate the sheer “absurd difficulty of being alive” (Geoff Berner) with wit and grace. \nOver the last ten years while touring Canada\, the USA and Europe\, Garton has developed a distinctive voice on the accordion\, mixing Cajun\, European and country styles with ease into an exciting roots music feast. Whether backed by his powerful band the Demon Squadron or solo\, armed with an accordion and trumpet\, his shows are theatrical\, fluid\, confessional\, and fun. They reflect a lifetime of devotion to the art of live music as well as an impressive breadth of life experience including his roles as a father and husband\, local gravedigger\, theatre artist\, and music teacher.

SUMMARY:Garret T. Willie
DESCRIPTION:“Canada’s next big thing in down-and-dirty blues guitardom” (Toronto Star)\, Garret T. Willie gives rock ‘n’ roll a formidable 21st-century kick in the ass with heartbreaking\, hilarious stories and hard-stomping hardscrabble blues. Hailing from Kingcome Inlet\, off the coast of BC\, the uncommonly wise\, witty and weathered 24-year-old’s backstory gives him more right than most to sing the blues\, but there’s a helluva lot of raunchy fun going on alongside the exorcisms of tragedy and trauma. \nSchooled in all the right stuff\, from Howlin’ Wolf\, Albert King\, and Muddy Waters\, to Chuck Berry\, the Stones\, and AC/DC\, with a little outlaw country flavour on the side\, Garret T. Willie absolutely rips it up with the gut-busting honesty of someone who knows that if you ain’t lived it\, you shouldn’t sing it. \nWith Garret T. Willie guitar/vox\, Adam Baines bass/vox\, Bradley Lambert guitar/vox\, and Michael Wilford drums. \nPresented in association with Talking Stick Festival.
