SUMMARY:Dálava
DESCRIPTION:1601 Johnston St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R9 \nLed by vocalist/keyboardist Julia Úlehla and guitarist Aram Bajakian (Lou Reed\, John Zorn)\, the “utterly captivating” (Vancouver Sun) Dálava takes Czech folk melodies transcribed over 100 years ago by Úlehla’s great-grandfather and places them in a compelling contemporary context. Cinematic and wide-ranging\, the music of Dálava is beautifully rendered and hauntingly expressive. With cellist Peggy Lee and violinist Josh Zubot\, the groundbreaking Dálava offers a “stunning fusion of Middle European melody\, rock energy\, and scratchy avant-jazz textures” (Georgia Straight). \nNo refunds.

SUMMARY:Saba Amrei\, Lisa Cay Miller & Adrian Avendaño + Emad Armoush\, Josh Zubot & Parmela Attariwala
DESCRIPTION:1601 Johnston St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R9 \nSaba Amrei\, Lisa Cay Miller & Adrian Avendaño \nA master of extended improv technique and ardently cerebral composition\, the ever-investigative pianist Lisa Cay Miller coaxes out sounds from where few would imagine searching. Rising Iranian-Canadian vocalist Saba Amrei left Tehran at age 19 to study music at Capilano University’s award-winning program. A sublime improviser\, she also leads the Saba Amrei Iranian Quartet\, a dynamic group that focuses on jazz and Latin-influenced Iranian art music from before the 1979 revolution. Sound artist and drummer Adrian Avendaño is one of the city’s most intriguing and creatively omnivorous emerging musicians. His improvisation approach is informed by experimental electronic music\, free jazz\, soundscape composition\, and deep listening. \nA meeting of three of the West Coast’s most attuned improvisers\, each as notable for their impressive musicality as their ability to bridge diverse genres\, disciplines\, and communities. \nEmad Armoush\, Josh Zubot & Parmela Attariwala \nSyrian/Canadian multi-instrumentalist/singer Emad Armoush (Haram) melds traditional Arabic music\, free improv\, and electronic manipulations alongside some of Canada’s finest creative musicians. In 2023\, Drip Audio released Emad Armoush’s Duos\, five creative dialogues with Francois Houle\, Jesse Zubot\, Kenton Loewen\, JP Carter\, and Marina Hasselberg. His quintet Rayhan’s sophomore album comes out this fall. Violinist Josh Zubot’s adventuresome talent alights on jazz\, classical\, folk\, and the avant-garde’s back-40. A veteran of Montréal’s vibrant music scene (Patrick Watson\, Land of Kush)\, he’s found a perfect home in the genre-defying West Coast improv community since 2017\, working with Tony Wilson\, SICK BOSS\, and Dálava\, and international artists like Darius Jones and Gerald Cleaver. Rhythm Changes called the new album from Zubot’s Strings project “one of the most active and energetic albums without drums that you’ll ever hear.” Violist Parmela Attariwala interweaves performance\, creation\, and academia. She’s released three critically-acclaimed Attar Project albums of works for violin and tabla\, collaborated extensively with visual artists and choreographers—both as a composer and a movement artist—and created music for film and opera. Active in genre-bending sound since 1994\, Attariwala has worked with Carla Bley\, Ravi Naimpally\, Anthony Braxton\, Don Thompson\, and Vancouver New Music. In 2022\, she co-founded Understory\, an online creation network for Canadian improvising artists. \nDoors open at 4:30pm. “Pay What You Can” or PWYC encourages donations upon entry. Cash\, debit\, credit card and Apple pay will be accepted. Money raised goes to support Coastal Jazz. Please note – no one will be turned away for insufficient funds.

DESCRIPTION:1218 Cartwright St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R8 \nLed by renowned keyboardist/composer/conductor Wayne Horvitz\, whose “extraordinary melodic instincts make anything he attempts a riveting pleasure” (The Stranger)\, Electric Circus is a large and charged ensemble that uses sampled grooves\, improvised sonic exploration\, light projections\, and a boatload of talent to reimagine classic soul\, funk\, rock\, and psych. \nStepping away from the keys for this project\, Horvitz uses “conduction” – in the tradition of Butch Morris – to guide players through a psychedelic montage of tight ensemble sections\, full-on dance party grooves\, and far-reaching improvisations that use motifs from classic recordings by James Brown\, Willie Dixon\, Captain Beefheart\, Miles Davis\, The Dead\, The Pointer Sisters\, Sun Ra\, The Clash\, and Parliament Funkadelic as jumping-off points towards thrilling new sonic possibilities. \nAfter performing Electric Circus exclusively in Seattle since 2015\, Horvitz is now presenting the band across Europe\, Canada\, and the US\, using first-call local musicians and special guests. SUMMARY:Pasquale Grasso Trio feat. André Lachance and Andrew Millar
DESCRIPTION:1531 Johnston St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R9 \nPat Metheny called Pasquale Grasso “the best guitar player I’ve heard in maybe my entire life.” It was the kind of endorsement most rising guitarists can only dream of\, but what’s more impressive is that this exceptional player doesn’t sound like Metheny in the slightest. Nor does he follow in the paths of Scofield or Frisell. Born in Italy and now based in New York City\, Grasso’s astounding pianistic technique is informed not by modern jazz guitarists\, but by bebop pioneers like Bud Powell\, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. \nHe’s brought his sparkling\, immaculately balanced tone\, tasteful tinges of stride and boogie-woogie\, deft chordal harmony and stunning single-note runs to interplay with Samara Joy\, Sheila Jordan\, Ray Drummond\, Steve Grossman\, Grant Stewart\, and—for this special performance—a trio featuring André Lachance and Andrew Millar. Lachance is one of the finest and busiest bassists in Vancouver\, known for work with Peggy Lee Band\, Brad Turner\, Chris Gestrin\, and Hard Rubber Orchestra\, while Andrew Millar has established himself as one of the NYC scene’s first-call swing\, trad\, and straight-ahead jazz drummers since relocating from BC to Brooklyn back in 2015.

SUMMARY:Horse Lords
DESCRIPTION:1601 Johnston St\, Vancouver\, BC V6H 3R9 \nBaltimore Magazine called Comradely Objects\, the jaw-dropping 2020 album from Horse Lords\, “meticulously controlled chaos—a masterpiece of creative freedom\, contrasts\, and contradictions.” \nWith dizzyingly obsessive rhythmic energy\, Andrew Bernstein saxophone\, percussion\, electronics\, Max Eilbacher bass\, electronics\, Owen Gardner guitar\, electronics\, and drummer Booker Stardrum give frenetic gravity to an avant alloy of influences and approaches. \nThe band’s palette includes the mantra-like repetition of minimalism and global traditional musics\, complex counterpoint\, the subtleties of microtonality\, and a breadth of timbres and textures drawn from all across the avant-garde. Echoes of late-70s No Wave\, mathy post-rock\, and insistent\, iterative composers like Arnold Dreyblatt and Terry Riley ring through their restlessly musical ripples\, drones\, chugs\, and hypnotic ascents. \nNo refunds.

SUMMARY:Benny Green
DESCRIPTION:Frankies Jazz Club presents SOLO\, a concert series featuring today’s premiere pianists in the intimate confines the beautiful Pyatt Hall at the VSO School of Music. \nAt the age of 19\, Benny Green moved to New York City to join legendary vocalist Betty Carters band and never looked back. He would then assume the piano chair with some of jazz music’s most important instrumental groups\, including Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers\, Freddie Hubbard\, and the Ray Brown Trio. With these artists he would receive an invaluable artistic education\, learn to embody the artform and master the music. \nIn 1988 he released his debut album as a leader Prelude on Criss Cross Records\, which featured Terrence Blanchard\, Javon Jackson\, Peter Washington\, and Tony Reedus. In 1990\, he signed with Blue Note Records\, for which he made seven recordings. These records featured some of the best musicians working in the idiom including Stlanley Turrentine\, Ron Carter\, Ray Drummond\, Christian McBride\, Victor Lewis\, Lewis Nash and Carl Allen. In 2000 he would begin recording with Telarc Records. These albums featured his collaboration with guitarist Russell Malone. \nSince 2013 he has released 5 albums on Sunnyside Records\, and plans are in the works for a solo piano recording\, which will be scheduled for release in the coming year. \nTaking inventory of the music industry and societal perception of jazz today\, Benny Green states that he is committed to the truth of what has been given by people who lived and died for this music\, playing honest jazz is precious to my human existence. I’ve never felt a need or a calling to become one who’s thought of or labeled as an innovator. Rather\, I’ve strived since childhood to become an authentic jazz musician\, and I seek to stand as a torchbearer for the continuum of straight-ahead jazz piano. \n*please note this event takes place at Pyatt Hall at 843 Seymour Street and tickets are sold through PromoTix (see link)

SUMMARY:IronFest V: Night Two - Kevin Romain's Salience Network + Brodie West Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Click here to purchase a ticket bundle to Ironfest. \nKevin Romain’s Salience Network \nSalience Network is a modern jazz ensemble led by drummer/composer Kevin Romain. Dramatic\, spontaneous creation and razor-sharp precision come together on stage with Romain’s longtime collaborators Nikko Whitworth bass\, John Nicholson tenor and soprano saxophones\, and Feven Kidane trumpet. Through dense polyrhythms and snaking melodies\, they explore Romain’s hyperfixations on the neuroscience of emotion\, circadian biology\, coffee extraction theory\, cool animals\, and anti-colonial resistance. The Salience Network’s debut album\, recorded to tape at Vancouver’s Afterlife Studios and released in November 2023 on the Infidels Jazz label\, is a somber document punctuated by moments of humour and hope. \nBrodie West Quintet \nToronto-based saxophonist/composer Brodie West is a tireless creative force—both within jazz spheres and well beyond them. He’s one of those rare artists whose practice encompasses tremendous breadth but whose singular\, eccentric voice is irrepressible. West’s quintet features two drummers – Nick Fraser and Evan Cartwright – along with pianist Tania Gill and Josh Cole on bass. The group plays West’s rhythmically charged compositions\, presenting an intricate rhythmic matrix at times meditative\, buoyant and wrapped with lyrical melodicism and virtuosic improvisation. \nThis is a 19+ event. \nPresented in collaboration with the Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival. \nFor 21 years\, the Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival has been grounded in the Downtown Eastside and focused on listening and learning from the community’s cultural practices. SUMMARY:Eric Reed
DESCRIPTION:Frankies Jazz Club presents SOLO\, a concert series featuring today’s premiere pianists in the intimate confines the beautiful Pyatt Hall at the VSO School of Music. \nAs a piano-playing prodigy\, Philadelphia native Eric Reed performed gospel music in his father’s church at age 5. By 7\, he began formal study at Philadelphia’s Settlement Music School\, and four years later\, after his family moved to Los Angeles\, he studied at the Richard D. Colburn School of Performing Arts\, where he would eventually meet Wynton Marsalis during a workshop. By 18\, Reed began subbing in Marsalis’ band\, replacing Marcus Roberts in the trumpeter’s renowned septet the following year. Reed then worked briefly as a sideman with Freddie Hubbard and Joe Henderson before returning to Marsalis’ group\, subsequently appearing on 1992’s Citi Movement\, 1993’s In This House\, On This Morning\, 1996’s Jump Start And Jazz\, 1997’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Blood On The Fields and 1998’s Standard Time\, Vol. 5: The Midnight Blues. Reed also recorded first six albums as a leader during his tenure with Marsalis\, including 1993’s It’s All Right To Swing and 1994’s The Swing And I\, both titles reflecting the pianist’s urgent desire to fit in with the whole somewhat revisionist agenda of the Young Lions. \nThrough his formative years with Marsalis\, his emergence as a leader on the New York jazz scene and the 30 albums that he made under his own name\, Reed kept a secret that plagued him. Now\, with the release of Black\, Brown & Blue\, his heartfelt tribute to jazz masters who came before him\, the 52-year-old pianist has decided it was time to talk about it. Reed’s 31st as a leader and fourth for Smoke Sessions marks the first album that he has recorded while being completely open about his bisexuality\, resulting in what he calls his most autobiographical release to date. As he stated in label’s press release: “It’s time for me to just go ahead and be completely authentic in every aspect of my life. That includes being more open about my sexuality and proactively moving into spaces connected with the LGBTQ+ community. Those aspects of my life were becoming more bold and more broad\, and I could no longer keep them on the margins.” \nPyatt Hall is an acoustically and vibrationally isolated performance space contructed from locally sourced basalt stone and sound diffusing maple wood slats which contribute to the unparalleled acoustics that the space offers\, as well as adds an elegant and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere. \n*please note this event takes place at Pyatt Hall at 843 Seymour Street and tickets are sold through PromoTix (see link)

SUMMARY:Immanuel Wilkins & Lutosławski Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Immanuel Wilkins “embodies contemporary jazz at its most thrilling.” – MOJO \nThe music of saxophonist/composer Immanuel Wilkins is filled with empathy and conviction\, bonding arcs of melody and lamentation to pluming gestures of space and breath. Listeners were introduced to this riveting sound on Wilkins’ acclaimed debut Omega\, which was named the #1 Jazz Album of 2020 by The New York Times. On his stunning sophomore album The 7th Hand\, the Brooklyn-based\, Philadelphia-raised artist’s “ocean-deep jazz epics” (Pitchfork) explored relationships between presence and nothingness across an hour-long suite. \n\nThis Festival performance marks the Canadian premiere of a new Immanuel Wilkins piece written for the Lutosławski Quartet and commissioned by Jazztopad Festival / National Forum of Music in Wroclaw\, Poland. An ensemble of versatile and open-minded artists\, Roksana Kwaśnikowska violin\, Marcin Markowicz violin\, Artur Rozmysłowicz viola\, and Maciej Młodawski cello blend contemporary repertoire with gems from classical\, Romantic\, and jazz music. Founded in 2007\, the Lutosławski Quartet is one of Europe’s foremost contemporary classical string quartets\, specializing in the music of their namesake\, Witold Lutosławski\, as well as works by Bacewicz\, Szymanowski\, and the group’s own Marcin Markowicz. \nAbout the Piece: Ethnic Cleansing — An American Tradition \nThis piece is dedicated to the people of Palestine who have faced a systematic forced displacement from their homeland\, as well as the recent flood of deportations performed by the US Government. It explores the idea that Sandi Hilal speaks of in her essay “Permanent Temporariness”\, called “al masha”\, referring to group land cultivation in order to prevent their land being illegally seized by settlers. This piece is about constantly living on the edge of life and death. \nAdditional support is provided by the Polish Cultural Institute New York\, National Forum of Music – Poland\, and the Western Front. \nDiscounted tickets are available for students\, artists and those who are unable to afford full price. Select “Discount Pricing” tickets at checkout. \nThis venue does not have an elevator. For accessibility information and seating please contact: boxoffice@coastaljazz.ca
