SUMMARY:Handmade Blade
DESCRIPTION:Handmade Blade is Peggy Lee\, cello; Aram Bajakian\, guitar; and JP Carter\, trumpet. Each member of this trio contributes compositions that launch striking and explosive improvisations. This small group has a huge sonic palette and great energy. The trio has performed at numerous venues in Vancouver and in May 2016 made their US debut at Constellation in Chicago for the Chicago String Summit. The group has produced one recording: three interpretations of guitarist Aram Bajakian’s Dolphy Formations.

DESCRIPTION:Two-time Juno-nominated bassist\, composer\, bandleader\, and educator Jodi Proznick has earned a reputation as one of Canada’s finest jazz artists and collaborators. She has won numerous National Jazz Awards\, including Bassist of the Year twice. HAmong her many honours\, Jodi was awarded the Western Canadian Music Award for Jazz Artist of the Year for 2019.  Jodi Proznick’s New Horizons Project features three of Canada’s bright musical lights: Chris Davis on trumpet\, Tilden Webb on keys\, and Nick Bracewell on drums. They will be exploring jazz repertoire from albums such as Herbie Hancock’s Fat Albert Rotunda and Empyrean Isles\, Woody Shaw’s United\, Kenny Wheeler’s Gnu High and Miles Davis’  E.S.P as well as  new originals.

DESCRIPTION:This music isn’t shy about exploring extreme emotional dynamics or diverse sonic influences\, moving gutsily between free improvisation\, electro-acoustic composition\, jazz\, metal\, noise\, and song. Led by bassist James Meger\, the newly formed ensemble skillfully pulls listeners through trashed maximalist howls of feedback and noise to emerge in clearings of delicate acoustic improvisation. It’s a voyage through the supersaturated dirt of janky electronics to the purity of handmade sound\, but even that isn’t always what it seems. At its core\, this project explores the wild scope of human experience while teasing our confusion between the fake and the real; the most soulful cries come from broken machines. DESCRIPTION:In the late ’70s guitarist Lenny Breau and pedal steel guitarist Buddy Emmons teamed up and recorded an album entitled Minors Aloud. Recorded in Nashville\, the album became a hard-to-find classic and a must-listen for guitarists of any kind. DESCRIPTION:Described by CBC Music as one of 10 Vancouver acts to watch\, Only A Visitor is a quintet that blurs genre boundaries by straddling the line between art music and pop. Classically trained composer and arranger Robyn Jacob’s eclectic song writing showcases vocal techniques and arrangements that invoke Dirty Projectors and Bjork. With asymmetrical rhythms twisted around a pop skeleton\, Only A Visitor makes room for themselves between pop and experimental music. \nSince 2015\, the group (drummer Kevin Romain\, bassist Jeff Gammon\, and singers Emma Postl and Celina Kurz\, along with Jacob) has released one EP and two full length records. Together Only a Visitor has appeared at the Halifax\, Montreal\, Toronto\, and Vancouver Jazz Festivals\, as well as toured in Canada and internationally. In the works: one new full-length record and a theatrical concert collaboration with composer Nancy Tam\, which will be presented at Music on Main’s Modulus Festival in 2022.

Rolling Stone points out that “Guitarist Marc Ribot helped Tom Waits refine a new\, weird Americana on 1985’s Rain Dogs\, and since then he’s become the go-to guitar guy for all kinds of roots-music adventurers: Robert Plant and Alison Krauss\, Elvis Costello\, John Mellencamp.” His work has landed on numerous best-of lists\, including those of the Village Voice\, Downbeat\, The LA Times\, and NPR\, most recently his 2021 release with post-rock trio Ceramic Dog. He’s scored numerous films\, works regularly with Grammy Award winning producer T Bone Burnett and composer John Zorn\, and his first collection of writings\, Unstrung: Rants & Stories of a Noise Guitarist\, was published this August. \nFor this special solo appearance\, expect the unexpected. This performance will feature two sets: Gordon Grdina will begin the evening with a set of Tim Berne compositions\, followed by Tim Berne & Gregg Belisle-Chi with a set from their new album\, Mars. \nDeclared “a saxophonist and composer of granite conviction” by the New York Times\, Tim Berne has been making waves internationally since 1982 with various ensembles (Caos Totale\, Fractured Fairy Tales\, Bloodcount\, Snakeoil) and has made over 50 recordings as a leader for labels such as Soul Note\, Sony\, JMT\, ECM\, and Intakt records. \nGregg Belisle-Chi is an Asian-American guitarist and composer whose work draws from the spaces between the spiritual and the analytical\, the ethereal and the tactile—he invites listeners to a place of pause and reflection\, creating music that “oozes beauty both in concept and execution\, making us luxuriate in its immersive sonorities.” (Part-Time Audiophile) \nGordon Grdina is a JUNO Award-winning oud/guitarist whose music spurs constant genre exploration throughout avant-garde jazz\, free form improvisation\, experimental rock\, and Arabic music. Expect an evening of spontaneity and unexpected takes on the songs that Jazz fans and practitioners of the tradition will know well\, with a nod to composers that have a special influence on the band\, including Thelonius Monk\, Duke Ellington\, and Cole Porter. \nJune 26\, 2022 Brunch \nMADELINE ELKINS DUO  \nLocal jazz guitarist\, Madeleine Elkins\, leads a duo show accompanied by Chad Galpin on bass. Elkins and Galpin will play their arrangements of jazz standards while exploring their unique sound. Elkins is inspired by the greats in the Folk\, Rock and Jazz genres while finding common ground through her love for the guitar. Currently\, Madeleine contributes to many music projects in Vancouver and is seen playing with Spindle! and the Sister Jazz Orchestra in this year’s 2022 Jazz Festival. \nJune 26\, 2022 Evening \nWYNSTON MINCKLER TRIO  \nWynston Minckler is a stalwart member of the Vancouver jazz scene and can be found supporting many different artists around the city in a variety of styles and context\, always bringing his unique rhythmic and dynamic style.  On this trio outing he will be leading a lesser heard band of guitar and violin featuring Josh Roberts and Clara Rose.  This trio performs a mix or originals and arrangements of standards and finds a through line between swinging jazz\, chamber music\, soap opera themes\, and folk music. Josh Roberts on Guitar\, Clara Rose on violin \nJune 27\, 2022 \nTHOMAS HOULDEN TRIO \nVancouver-based brass player and composer Thomas Houlden steps away from the conductor’s podium to lead an intimate and relaxed cool-jazz trio accompanied by Chris Fraser (guitar) and Marcus Abramzik (bass). The group will be playing a selection of charming standards and originals influenced by Thad Jones\, Bob Brookmeyer\, and Chet Baker. \nWhen not writing or performing\, Thomas currently works as a band teacher and jazz/brass clinician in the Greater Vancouver area. He has begun remote-recording several of his original compositions for the Thomas Houlden 11tet\, hiring a rotating cast of stellar young musicians from across Canada\, which are available on YouTube. A four-track EP by the Thomas Houlden Sextet recorded in 2018\, “The Price of Wisdom\,” is also available for purchase and download on Bandcamp. \nJune 28\, 2022 \nDEAN THIESSEN TRIO \nDean Thiessen’s STRANGER FRIENDS released their debut album in the spring of 2021 in the middle of the pandemic. Dean’s compositions are thoughtful and exciting as they pull from the many influences of his childhood scenes on the prairies and the literary works of John Steinbeck to name a few. Since the music was recorded and released it is just coming back to life as performances make their way back into our lives. This performance will feature some music from the album\, new music from the yet to be released ‘Good Samaritan Suite’ and brand new music written just for this occasion. The core meaning of STRANGER FRIENDS is a celebration of friendships that have given me so much music and of music that has given me so many friendships. \nJune 29\, 2022 \nSHRUTI RAMANI TRIO \nShruti Ramani is an innovative and emerging artist in the Canadian Jazz scene. She hails from Mumbai\, India where she secured a degree in Hindustani music under the mentorship of Dr. Ritu Johri from the Agra Gharana. She moved to Canada and acquired a Bachelor in Jazz Studies (Performance) with a specialisation in voice from Capilano University. Her original music is an eclectic combination of the Indian and Jazz traditions. She composes and arranges music that fuse the two traditions to create dynamic pieces for both large and small ensembles. She leads a collaborative ensemble named ‘Raagaverse’ with respected musicians in the industry\, namely\, Jodi Proznick\, Noah Franche-Nolan and Nicholas Bracewell. Shruti has also been featured on Shaw TV and the Music at the Cinemas series hosted by Vancouver Independent Music Society. She has performed in other music festivals locally and internationally such as the Cultural Communion at Seychelles. She was a member of the vocal group\, ‘NAFS’ formed by the Grammy award winning music director\, Dr. A.R Rahman. She has also worked with Max Clouth and Dan Bay under Wayu Records in a collaborative album in 2021. She is set to release her first album with Raagaverse in the upcoming year. \nJune 30\, 2022 \nGEOFF CLARIDGE TRIO \nWoodwinds specialist Geoff Claridge leads an approachable unorthodox trio through eclectic original compositions and the reimagined bluesy folk-jazz of the early Jimmy Giuffre 3. Inspired by Debussy’s Sonata for Flute\, Viola and Harp\, every instrument plays every musical role of this interchangeable ensemble\, featuring Vancouver stalwarts Bonnie Northgraves voice\, David Blake guitar\, and Geoff Claridge bass clarinet. \nJuly 1\, 2022 \nJENNIFER SCOTT TRIO  \nJennifer Scott – piano/vocals\nRene Worst – bass\nDavid Sikula – guitar \nJuly 2\, 2022 Brunch \nALVIN BRENDAN DUO \nAlvin Brendan has been quickly crafting a strong identity for himself as a Jazz musician in Vancouver. Despite his youth\, he has been fortunate enough to land many performance and recording opportunities with Vancouver’s best. Alvin attributes his cool and sophisticated sound to his learning from his local heroes Bill Coon and Ron Samworth\, as well as having the opportunity to learn from internationally acclaimed legends Peter Bernstein and Lorne Lofsky. In combining his love for early Jazz/Swing music with his contemporary influences\, Alvin always aims to create a statement that adheres to a rich musical tradition whilst being exciting and fresh. Seventy-odd years on\, the classics of the American Songbook are alive and well in his hands. Jeremy is joined by longtime collaborator\, Alvin Brendan\, on guitar. \n\nJuly 3\, 2022 Evening \nSTEPHANIE WALL TRIO  \nGlasses clink\, feet shuffle on the floor. Warm light bathes people sitting at tables\, while Steph Wall sings on stage. It’s where she belongs\, where she wants to be\, and where she connects with others. After over a decade of singing high and low\, Wall has now released three albums – all with a unique sound that catalogue the time and place where she was during their creation. MERIDIAN \nMeridian is an exciting new band of many in-demand young musicians from Vancouver. This explosive 10-piece instrumental group debuted in the fall of 2015\, picking up from where Miami Device (BC’s premier Afrobeat orchestra since 2007) left off. For his part\, the ever-evolving Murley has played on fourteen JUNO Award-winning recordings since 1990\, snagging seven as leader and seven as a sideman. SUMMARY:Brad Turner Quintet featuring Mike Murley - Late Show
DESCRIPTION:JUNO and National Jazz Award-winning trumpeter/composer Brad Turner has been an enormously influential figure on the Vancouver jazz scene since 1997\, the year he co-founded the acclaimed Metalwood with saxophonist Mike Murley. For his part\, the ever-evolving Murley has played on fourteen JUNO Award-winning recordings since 1990\, snagging seven as leader and seven as a sideman. With Chris Gestrin piano\, André Lachance bass\, and Dylan van der Schyff drums\, the quintet’s travels overlap with fellow explorers Kenny Wheeler\, Motian/Lovano/Frisell\, and some of the ECM label’s finest sonic cartographers.

DESCRIPTION:The brainchild of left-field composer/producer/instrument builder and multimedia artist Jay Crocker\, JOYFULTALK’s kaleidoscopic sound phases giddily between analog and electronic dimensions. His fellow travelers—like the supernatural Jesse Zubot on violin and electronics and drummer Eric Hamelin—are guided by the Nova Scotia-based Croker’s graphic scores\, handmade kinetic sculptures\, and resurrected gear through dense\, exuberant avant-jazz collages. Whether it’s the ghost in the machine\, or the man behind the curtain\, someone has a great ear for off-kilter melodies and widescreen\, trance-inducing\, futurist out-jazz. The immersive new album Familiar Science is out now on Constellation Records.
