SUMMARY:SPOTLIGHT ON ITALY
DESCRIPTION:This year we are delighted to present a magnificent journey into a broad spectrum of Italian music\, made possible through the outstanding support of the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver\, and the Italian Cultural Centre. \nTwo of the groups featured in the Spotlight\, MACK & Dadada\, were discovered while visiting the exquisite Fano Jazz by the Sea festival in Italy in July of 2018. The festival in Fano featured a program that was so inspiring that we felt compelled to immediately invite these two groups to perform in Vancouver the following year. DESCRIPTION:Julian Jayme is a Montréal-based jazz guitarist who has studied at Capilano University\, the Berklee College of Music in Boston\, and McGill University. Over the course of his career\, he has played at both the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival and the TD Ottawa International Jazz Festivals as well as venues all over Canada and the United States. Back home after a year spent in Montreal\, he leads his trio in a set of some of their favourite standards. \nWith James Meger bass and John Lee drums.

Mobley was described by Leonard Feather as the “middleweight champion of the tenor saxophone”\, a metaphor used to describe his tone\, that was neither as aggressive as John Coltrane nor as mellow as Stan Getz\, and his style that was laid-back\, subtle and melodic\, especially in contrast with players like Sonny Rollins and Coltrane. The critic Stacia Proefrock claimed he is “one of the most underrated musicians of the bop era.” \nWith Chris Gestrin piano\, John Lee bass\, and Joe Poole drums.
