SUMMARY:Tim Berne & Gregg Belisle-Chi with Gordon Grdina
DESCRIPTION:Join three of North America’s finest and most fiercely creative avant-garde musicians for a night of electrifying new music. This performance will feature two sets: Gordon Grdina will begin the evening with a set of Tim Berne compositions\, followed by Tim Berne & Gregg Belisle-Chi with a set from their new album\, Mars. \nDeclared “a saxophonist and composer of granite conviction” by the New York Times\, Tim Berne has been making waves internationally since 1982 with various ensembles (Caos Totale\, Fractured Fairy Tales\, Bloodcount\, Snakeoil) and has made over 50 recordings as a leader for labels such as Soul Note\, Sony\, JMT\, ECM\, and Intakt records. \nGregg Belisle-Chi is an Asian-American guitarist and composer whose work draws from the spaces between the spiritual and the analytical\, the ethereal and the tactile—he invites listeners to a place of pause and reflection\, creating music that “oozes beauty both in concept and execution\, making us luxuriate in its immersive sonorities.” (Part-Time Audiophile) \nGordon Grdina is a JUNO Award-winning oud/guitarist whose music spurs constant genre exploration throughout avant-garde jazz\, free form improvisation\, experimental rock\, and Arabic music. His singular approach to the instruments has earned him recognition from the highest ranks of the jazz/improv world.

He has begun remote-recording several of his original compositions for the Thomas Houlden 11tet\, hiring a rotating cast of stellar young musicians from across Canada\, which are available on YouTube. This performance will feature some music from the album\, new music from the yet to be released ‘Good Samaritan Suite’ and brand new music written just for this occasion. SUMMARY:Josh Zubot Quartet + Darius Jones
DESCRIPTION:Composer/violinist Josh Zubot has lent his restless and adventurous spirit to eclectic groups like Subtle Lip Can\, Patrick Watson\, and Land of Kush. \nWith vanguard melodic writing and no allegiance to genre\, his quartet of Chris Kelly tenor sax\, Karlis Silins bass\, and drummer Chacal del Tamborazo bursts with conviction\, emotion\, experimentation\, and power. \nFor this performance\, they’re joined by special guest Darius Jones\, who The New York Times called “the most visceral and distinctive alto saxophonist of this era.”

SUMMARY:Adria Kain + Janette King
DESCRIPTION:ADRIA KAIN \nSharing stories of ardour\, resilience\, and self-actualization\, Adria Kain’s voice\, at once powerful and restrained\, is a balm for times of tumult and noise. Chronicling a range of experiences\, from the palliative effects of the natural world to embracing her identity as a queer Black woman\, Adria’s new album When Flowers Bloom reminds us what it’s like to fall in love for the first time—or to discover an artist whose music can pierce your soul. \nJANETTE KING \nThrough the prism of alternative R&B\, house\, and pop\, Caribbean-Canadian vocalist/producer/multi-instrumentalist Janette King’s What We Lost unpacks the complexities of grief with a wisdom you wouldn’t wish on someone so young. It’s a statement that—like contemporaries Victoria Monét and Snoh Aalegra—fuses deeply personal assessments of life with glass-half-full soundscapes that “ought to place her right near the top of the list of this country’s up-and-coming R&B artists” – Exclaim! \nPresented in association with Queer Arts Festival

He’s been a major influence on musical giants from Jimi Hendrix to Stevie Ray Vaughan\, and has collaborated with other blues legends Muddy Waters\, B.B. King\, and Sonny Boy Williamson. All this\, and Guy continues to push forward with a truly astounding career\, bringing joyful mastery to every performance: “I’m trying to do something to keep this music that I love so well alive.”

SUMMARY:JOYFULTALK
DESCRIPTION:The brainchild of left-field composer/producer/instrument builder and multimedia artist Jay Crocker\, JOYFULTALK’s kaleidoscopic sound phases giddily between analog and electronic dimensions. His fellow travelers—like the supernatural Jesse Zubot on violin and electronics and drummer Eric Hamelin—are guided by the Nova Scotia-based Croker’s graphic scores\, handmade kinetic sculptures\, and resurrected gear through dense\, exuberant avant-jazz collages. Whether it’s the ghost in the machine\, or the man behind the curtain\, someone has a great ear for off-kilter melodies and widescreen\, trance-inducing\, futurist out-jazz. The immersive new album Familiar Science is out now on Constellation Records.

SUMMARY:PIQSIQ + Kee Avil
DESCRIPTION:PIQSIQ \nAlternating between ancient songs and haunting new compositions\, PIQSIQ draws upon Inuit throat singing traditions to create spine-tingling ambiance that transports listeners to the North and beyond. With roots in Nunavut and Yellowknife\, sisters Tiffany Ayalik and Inuksuk Mackay began singing katajjaq in childhood. Incorporating improvised looping into their live performances\, PIQSIQ fuses the sounds of their forebears with a singular vision that’s both modern and otherworldly. \nPresented in association with Full Circle: First Nations Performance \nKEE AVIL \nHaving evolved from playing guitar with broken cymbals and drumsticks to forging askew tempos and templates glued together by samples of screws dropped into crystal bowls\, Constellation recording artist Kee Avil guitar/voice/electronics draws upon the bracing theatrics of Juana Molina\, Scott Walker\, Fiona Apple and PJ Harvey\, while arriving at a knotted sonic terrain that is all her own.

SUMMARY:JP Carter / Lisen Rylander Löve / Luke Stewart / Jason Nazary
DESCRIPTION:There was a time when a jazz quartet would play physical instruments in a manner everyone could understand\, and there’ll come a day when musicians will imprint their artistic ideas on folks with the merest wave of a laser tuba. Future historians will look back on Vancouver trumpeter JP Carter\, Swedish saxophonist Lisen Rylander Löve\, and Americans Luke Stewart (Irreversible Entanglements) bass and Jason Nazary (Anteloper) drums as essential links along that timeline: four artists who mastered their traditional instruments before adding extended techniques and electronic processing en route to entirely new modes of expression.
