SUMMARY:Blue Moon Marquee
DESCRIPTION:Join us in revisiting this stellar performance from the 2021 TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival! This stream will be available for one week only\, from Monday\, November 1 at 8PM to Monday\, November 8 at 8PM. You can watch the stream on both our YouTube channel and Facebook page. \nThe spirits of Delta blues\, ragtime\, Howlin’ Wolf\, and Django Reinhardt flow freely through this raw trio of A.W. Cardinal\, an Albertan guitarist/vocalist who cut his teeth in the jazz clubs and crowded bar rooms of Montreal and New York\, and rhythm section Jasmine Colette Ohlhauser on bass and percussion\, Morgan Onda on tenor sax and Darcy Phillips on piano. Together\, Blue Moon Marquee “plucks the danger from a Tom Waits melody\, dances it a little further over the line with dark magic\, teases the rhythms and raises a toast to back alley jazz.” (Canadian Music)

SUMMARY:Only A Visitor
DESCRIPTION:Described by CBC Music as one of 10 Vancouver acts to watch\, Only A Visitor is a quintet that blurs genre boundaries by straddling the line between art music and pop. Classically trained composer and arranger Robyn Jacob’s eclectic song writing showcases vocal techniques and arrangements that invoke Dirty Projectors and Bjork. With asymmetrical rhythms twisted around a pop skeleton\, Only A Visitor makes room for themselves between pop and experimental music. \nSince 2015\, the group (drummer Kevin Romain\, bassist Jeff Gammon\, and singers Emma Postl and Celina Kurz\, along with Jacob) has released one EP and two full length records. Together Only a Visitor has appeared at the Halifax\, Montreal\, Toronto\, and Vancouver Jazz Festivals\, as well as toured in Canada and internationally. In the works: one new full-length record and a theatrical concert collaboration with composer Nancy Tam\, which will be presented at Music on Main’s Modulus Festival in 2022.

SUMMARY:Josh Zubot Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Composer/violinist Josh Zubot is always on the lookout for new adventures in music. Over his busy career he’s led or co-led eclectic groups like Subtle Lip Can\, Mendham\, Josh Zubot Strings\, Land of Marigold\, and many others. Josh will once again present his new quartet to play compositions bursting with conviction\, emotion\, experimentation\, and power. Alongside his vanguard melodic writing\, a healthy dose of improvisation allows the group to meld together and decompose apart in all directions. Featuring local lights Chris Kelly tenor sax and Karlis Silins bass\, and Mexico City/Vancouver resident Chacal del Tamborazo drums.

SUMMARY:Marin Patenaude
DESCRIPTION:Singer/songwriter/guitarist/pianist Marin Patenaude’s absorbing sound is earthy\, soulful\, and achingly beautiful\, evoking comparisons to Joni Mitchell and kd lang. Marin’s pure voice and “heart-rending emotional breadth” (American Songwriter) weave together folk\, blues\, and hints of country into something sublimely intangible and alternative with Cole Schmidt (Pugs & Crows) guitar\, Pete Schmitt (Inhabitants) bass\, and John Raham (Frazey Ford) drums. Her sophomore album Sight Unseen was released in 2020 amidst a world of uncertainty\, and she’ll be releasing a follow-up album in 2022 that adventures into new and exciting sounds and feelings.

SUMMARY:Marc Ribot (solo)
DESCRIPTION:“…he can sit down with just his guitar and simultaneously confound you with technique\, beauty\, and surprise.”— John Garratt and Will Layman\, PopMatters \nRegardless of the context\, Marc Ribot’s versatility\, virtuosity\, and impeccable iconoclasm contribute to a sound that is recognizably his. Over a 40-year span\, Ribot has released 25 albums under his own name\, exploring everything from the pioneering jazz of Albert Ayler to the Cuban son of Arsenio Rodríguez. Rolling Stone points out that “Guitarist Marc Ribot helped Tom Waits refine a new\, weird Americana on 1985’s Rain Dogs\, and since then he’s become the go-to guitar guy for all kinds of roots-music adventurers: Robert Plant and Alison Krauss\, Elvis Costello\, John Mellencamp.” His work has landed on numerous best-of lists\, including those of the Village Voice\, Downbeat\, The LA Times\, and NPR\, most recently his 2021 release with post-rock trio Ceramic Dog. He’s scored numerous films\, works regularly with Grammy Award winning producer T Bone Burnett and composer John Zorn\, and his first collection of writings\, Unstrung: Rants & Stories of a Noise Guitarist\, was published this August. \nFor this special solo appearance\, expect the unexpected. Despite nods to both straight-ahead and avant-garde jazz\, Ribot has “invented his own world of sound that stops time in a different way.” (Artsfuse.org)

SUMMARY:Tim Berne & Gregg Belisle-Chi with Gordon Grdina
DESCRIPTION:Join three of North America’s finest and most fiercely creative avant-garde musicians for a night of electrifying new music. This performance will feature two sets: Gordon Grdina will begin the evening with a set of Tim Berne compositions\, followed by Tim Berne & Gregg Belisle-Chi with a set from their new album\, Mars. \nDeclared “a saxophonist and composer of granite conviction” by the New York Times\, Tim Berne has been making waves internationally since 1982 with various ensembles (Caos Totale\, Fractured Fairy Tales\, Bloodcount\, Snakeoil) and has made over 50 recordings as a leader for labels such as Soul Note\, Sony\, JMT\, ECM\, and Intakt records. \nGregg Belisle-Chi is an Asian-American guitarist and composer whose work draws from the spaces between the spiritual and the analytical\, the ethereal and the tactile—he invites listeners to a place of pause and reflection\, creating music that “oozes beauty both in concept and execution\, making us luxuriate in its immersive sonorities.” (Part-Time Audiophile) \nGordon Grdina is a JUNO Award-winning oud/guitarist whose music spurs constant genre exploration throughout avant-garde jazz\, free form improvisation\, experimental rock\, and Arabic music. His singular approach to the instruments has earned him recognition from the highest ranks of the jazz/improv world.

SUMMARY:IronFest III - Night One
DESCRIPTION:Vibrating ecstatically between composition and improvisation\, this absolute treat of a double bill features groups performing music from upcoming releases on the soon-to-be relaunched Drip Audio label. \nJosh Zubot and Strings\nViolinist/composer Josh Zubot’s omnivorous talent alights on jazz\, classical\, bluegrass\, folk\, musique actuelle\, and the avant-garde’s back-40. A restless adventurer and highly-detailed writer/arranger\, the veteran of Montréal’s vibrant music scene (Patrick Watson\, Land of Kush) has found a perfect home in the genre-defying West Coast improv community since relocating in 2017. With Meredith Bates violin\, Jesse Zubot violin/viola\, Peggy Lee cello\, and James Meger bass\, Josh Zubot’s vanguard Strings ensemble bursts with conviction\, emotion\, experimentation\, and power. \nSICK BOSS\n“SICK BOSS consistently delves deep beyond musical boundaries\, blurring borders between genres\, and scenes.”– Discorder Magazine \nSICK BOSS draws influence from the textural expansiveness of creative improvisation\, the intimacy of folk\, and the bombastic electric power of Hendrix. Whether leaning towards the beastly or (less commonly) the benign\, guitarist Cole Schmidt’s hard-edged\, hugely dynamic tunes are steered into unexpected territories by sonic impressionists Peggy Lee cello\, JP Carter trumpet/FX\, James Meger bass/FX\, Dan Gaucher drums/FX\, and Josh Zubot violin/FX. \nPresented in collaboration with:\nHeart of the City Festival and Music on Main Modulus Festival

SUMMARY:IronFest III - Night Two
DESCRIPTION:Three sets of unprecedented\, unrepeatable\, and unmissable meetings between international innovators\, cross-Canada all-stars\, and local lights. \nTrumpeter Feven Kidane is one of the freshest voices in jazz and experimental music. The creative firebrand will be performing in intergenerational exchange with guitarist Tony Wilson\, an almost mystical centre point of the genre-resistant West Coast improv and avant-composition scenes for more than three decades. \nTurkish-born\, US-based violinist Eylem Basaldi (Snarky Puppy\, Banda Magda) meets Vancouver-based guitarist and indefatigable collaborator Gordon Grdina (Jim Black\, Mats Gustafsson\, Mark Helias\, Matthew Shipp) and extended technique master bassist Torsten Müller in a trio that will stretch the limits of what can be coaxed out of wood and wires. \nClarinetist François Houle (Benoît Delbecq)\, UK pianist Alexander Hawkins (Louis Moholo-Moholo\, Wadada Leo Smith)\, and American drummer Kate Gentile (Jon Irabagon\, Mat Maneri) are endlessly generous improvisers whose vocabularies touch on chamber jazz\, modern composition\, and stratospheric melodicism. \nPresented in collaboration with:\nHeart of the City Festival and Music on Main Modulus Festival

SUMMARY:IronFest III - Night Three

DESCRIPTION:KEN VANDERMARK AND NOT FOR PROPER \nRenowned American composer\, improviser\, and MacArthur Fellowship recipient Ken Vandermark has a “room-filling\, spectrum-cramming\, mountain-moving tonal presence” (NOW Magazine) on sax and clarinets. A modern master and ardent sound explorer\, Vandermark has worked with Peter Brötzmann\, Kris Davis\, Terrie Ex\, Paal Nilssen-Love\, Ikue Mori\, Hamid Drake\, and scores of internationally renowned creative music giants. For this concert\, the prolific Chicagoan joins local duo Not for Proper in artful\, adventurous collaboration. \nPianist Lisa Cay Miller (NOW Orchestra) and drummer Kenton Loewen (Haram) have worked in a multitude of incarnations—both together and with local and international creative communities—dating back to when 1067 and The Sugar Refinery were keeping turn-of-the-century Granville Street weird and establishing Vancouver as a globally renowned improvised music hub. Cacophonous lifers\, Not for Proper juxtaposes polyrhythmic free din\, raw cracked tone\, and wild open peace. \nALVARO ROJAS’ MUSIC FOR 22 \nMusic for 22 began as a solo composition project for Alvaro Rojas in the early stages of the global pandemic. As the days wore on\, the restlessly inventive Rojas dug deeper\, arranging the pieces for string quartet alongside his adept guitar playing. With the guitar and string section sometimes working together\, sometimes in opposition\, Music for 22 ranges from contemplative beauty to turbulent rage alongside co-conspirators Meredith Bates violin\, Josh Zubot violin\, Parmela Attariwala viola\, and Peggy Lee cello. This evening celebrates the group’s new self-titled album release\, with cameos from American vocalist/producer Georgia Anne Muldrow and members of Vancouver’s vibrant music community.

SUMMARY:Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis
DESCRIPTION:Featuring 15 of the world’s finest players\, the remarkably versatile Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) has been performing\, educating\, and proudly flying the flag for jazz traditions across the globe and at their Lincoln Center home base – aka the House of Swing – since 1988. Under Music Director Wynton Marsalis\, they animate a vast repertoire\, from historic compositions by Ellington\, Monk\, Mingus\, and Mary Lou Williams\, to Jazz at Lincoln Center-commissioned works from current and former JLCO members like Marsalis\, Ted Nash\, Victor Goines\, Sherman Irby\, Chris Crenshaw\, and Carlos Henriquez. Expect an all-Wynton program this evening as the JLCO pays tribute to a living legend. \nCalled “the modern day Duke Ellington\, Glenn Miller and Gerry Mulligan all in one” by All About Jazz\, trumpeter/composer/bandleader Wynton Marsalis is an iconic jazz master. Born into the famed New Orleans musical family\, he was playing in the Fairview Baptist Church Band at 8 years old\, and the New Orleans Philharmonic by 12. He moved to New York in ‘79\, fresh out of high school\, and quickly traded his Julliard plans for a spot in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. At 19\, Wynton hit the road with his own band and has been touring the world ever since\, picking up nine GRAMMY Awards\, a Pulitzer Prize\, and a boatload of acclaim along the way. He eventually did find his way back to Julliard—as the prestigious school’s Founding Director of Jazz Studies. Wynton Marsalis sees jazz as a way of life\, a model of democratic action\, and “a prism through which American culture can be understood” (New York Times). Through his compositions\, virtuosic playing\, and tireless work as Music Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra\, Marsalis promotes individual creativity (improvisation)\, collective cooperation (swing)\, and gratitude (sophistication)\, while facing adversity with persistent optimism (the blues). \nWYNTON MARSALIS\, Music Director\, Trumpet\nRYAN KISOR\, Trumpet\nKENNY RAMPTON\, Trumpet\nMARCUS PRINTUP\, Trumpet\nVINCENT GARDNER\, Trombone\nCHRIS CRENSHAW\, Trombone\, The Golkin Family Chair\nELLIOT MASON\, Trombone\nSHERMAN IRBY\, Alto and Soprano Saxophones\, Flute\, Clarinet\nALEXA TARANTINO\, Alto and Soprano Saxophones\, Flute\, Clarinet\nCHRIS LEWIS\, Tenor and Soprano Saxophones\, Clarinet\, Bass Clarinet\nABDIAS ARMENTEROS\, Tenor and Soprano Saxophones\, Clarinet\nPAUL NEDZELA\, Baritone and Soprano Saxophones\, Clarinet\, Bass Clarinet\nDAN NIMMER\, Piano\, The Zou Family Chair\nCARLOS HENRIQUEZ\, Bass\, The Mandel Family Chair in honor of Kathleen B. SUMMARY:IronFest IV: Beatings Are In The Body
DESCRIPTION:Beatings Are In The Body is a powerful and enigmatic project from three of Canada’s leading figures in experimental music — Vancouver-based pianist/composer/improviser Róisin Adams (of Hildegard’s Ghost)\, Montréal-based experimental vocalist/composer Erika Angell (of Thus Owls)\, and fellow Vancouverite Peggy Lee — renowned cellist/composer/improviser. As their name indicates there’s a raw\, volatile dimension to the music they create\, “it’s an investigation of how memories\, pain\, and a spectrum of emotions are stored in and continue to be carried by our physical bodies.” Their unflinching\, self-titled debut full-length album resides in the dark fissures between adventurous acoustic songcraft\, poetry\, and the outright abstraction of free improv. \nPresented in collaboration with Heart of the City Festival.

SUMMARY:IronFest IV: Josh Cole's Kind Mind
DESCRIPTION:Josh Cole’s Kind Mind is an electro-acoustic chamber ensemble based in Toronto featuring three of Canada’s premiere improvising musicians – Karen Ng alto saxophone/clarinet/synth\, Michael Davidson vibraphone/marimba/pedals and Josh Cole double bass/pedals/synth/sampler. Rooted in an approach to improvisation that has been brewing in the Toronto creative music hub “The Tranzac” for decades\, the trio explores a fractured\, sparse\, and timbral approach reinforced by brief compositions and a long history of collective music making. “I like the trio’s unique musical vision\, its tender and determined sound and the way it is delivered: with quality and precision. To create your own voice in the crowded musical environment of today is a feat.” (freejazzblog) \nPresented in collaboration with Heart of the City Festival with support from Canada Council.

SUMMARY:IronFest IV: Craig Taborn
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn-based Craig Taborn has been performing piano and electronic music in the jazz\, improvisational\, and creative music scene for over twenty five years. He has experience composing for and performing in a wide variety of situations including jazz\, new music\, electronic\, rock\, noise and avant garde contexts. The New York Times Magazine calls Taborn “One of the best jazz pianists alive.” \nCraig Taborn’s 2021 live album Avenging Angel was widely praised for the fresh ideas it brought to the solo piano idiom. The Guardian saluted Craig’s “genius (there is no other word for it)” and his “world of whispered\, wide-spaced figures\, ringing overtones\, evaporating echoes and glowering contrapuntal cascades.” Over the last decade Taborn has continued to refine and develop his approach\, reaching new high ground with Shadow Plays\, a stunning live recital from Vienna’s Konzerthaus. In this fully improvised concert\, recorded in March 2020\, Craig explores sounds and silences\, swirling colours\, densities and forms\, creating new music in the moment with both poetic imagination and an iron grip on his spontaneously generated material. \nPresented in collaboration with Heart of the City Festival.

SUMMARY:Unwritten Thursdays: Chris Corsano & Elisa Thorne + Cat Toren\, James Meger & Liam Murphy
DESCRIPTION:MONTHLY SERIES AT TYRANT STUDIOS (1019 Seymour St. *upstairs*) \nPresented in collaboration by Barking Sphinx Performing Society and Coastal Jazz \n9pm doors\n9:30pm music\n$15-20 \n(Tickets are not available for purchase until January 18th) \n1st set: CHRIS CORSANO & ELISA THORNE \n2nd set: CAT TOREN\, JAMES MEGER & LIAM MURPHY \nChris Corsano is a New York-based drummer who has been working at the intersections of free jazz\, avant-rock\, and experimental music since the late ’90s. He’s a rim-batterer of choice for some of the greatest contemporary purveyors of “jazz” (Joe McPhee\, Mette Rasmussen\, Zoh Amba) and “rock” (Sir Richard Bishop\, Bill Orcutt\, Jim O’Rourke)\, as well as artists beyond categorization (Björk for her Volta album and world tour\, Michael Flower\, Okkyung Lee). Appearing on over 180 albums and touring in an ultra-wide array of collaborations\, he’s a renowned solo performer in his own right\, with a record due out later this year on the Drag City label. He’s built a highly inventive musical language through ecstatic free improvisation\, extended percussion techniques\, and the augmentation of his kit with circular-breathed reeds and bowed strings that coax new resonances out of the drums’ heads. Corsano’s been called “one of the world’s great drummers” by The Guardian\, an “ace of the avant-garde” by The New York Times\, a “powerhouse drummer” by Rolling Stone\, and “arguably the most riotously energetic and creative drummer in contemporary free jazz” by Wire Magazine. Spin ranked him as one of the “100 Greatest Drummers of Alternative Music\,” and in 2017\, he received the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award. \nArts & design: Leisure Thief
