DESCRIPTION:In the late ’70s guitarist Lenny Breau and pedal steel guitarist Buddy Emmons teamed up and recorded an album entitled Minors Aloud. Recorded in Nashville\, the album became a hard-to-find classic and a must-listen for guitarists of any kind. Tony Wilson\,guitar and Scott Smith\, pedal steel\, along with Jeremy Holmes bass and Liam MacDonald drums\, will play music from that gem of an album\, as well as other tunes by Lenny and Buddy.

DESCRIPTION:Described by CBC Music as one of 10 Vancouver acts to watch\, Only A Visitor is a quintet that blurs genre boundaries by straddling the line between art music and pop. Classically trained composer and arranger Robyn Jacob’s eclectic song writing showcases vocal techniques and arrangements that invoke Dirty Projectors and Bjork. With asymmetrical rhythms twisted around a pop skeleton\, Only A Visitor makes room for themselves between pop and experimental music. \nSince 2015\, the group (drummer Kevin Romain\, bassist Jeff Gammon\, and singers Emma Postl and Celina Kurz\, along with Jacob) has released one EP and two full length records. Together Only a Visitor has appeared at the Halifax\, Montreal\, Toronto\, and Vancouver Jazz Festivals\, as well as toured in Canada and internationally. In the works: one new full-length record and a theatrical concert collaboration with composer Nancy Tam\, which will be presented at Music on Main’s Modulus Festival in 2022.

Rolling Stone points out that “Guitarist Marc Ribot helped Tom Waits refine a new\, weird Americana on 1985’s Rain Dogs\, and since then he’s become the go-to guitar guy for all kinds of roots-music adventurers: Robert Plant and Alison Krauss\, Elvis Costello\, John Mellencamp.” His work has landed on numerous best-of lists\, including those of the Village Voice\, Downbeat\, The LA Times\, and NPR\, most recently his 2021 release with post-rock trio Ceramic Dog. He’s scored numerous films\, works regularly with Grammy Award winning producer T Bone Burnett and composer John Zorn\, and his first collection of writings\, Unstrung: Rants & Stories of a Noise Guitarist\, was published this August. \nFor this special solo appearance\, expect the unexpected. This performance will feature two sets: Gordon Grdina will begin the evening with a set of Tim Berne compositions\, followed by Tim Berne & Gregg Belisle-Chi with a set from their new album\, Mars. \nDeclared “a saxophonist and composer of granite conviction” by the New York Times\, Tim Berne has been making waves internationally since 1982 with various ensembles (Caos Totale\, Fractured Fairy Tales\, Bloodcount\, Snakeoil) and has made over 50 recordings as a leader for labels such as Soul Note\, Sony\, JMT\, ECM\, and Intakt records. \nGregg Belisle-Chi is an Asian-American guitarist and composer whose work draws from the spaces between the spiritual and the analytical\, the ethereal and the tactile—he invites listeners to a place of pause and reflection\, creating music that “oozes beauty both in concept and execution\, making us luxuriate in its immersive sonorities.” (Part-Time Audiophile) \nGordon Grdina is a JUNO Award-winning oud/guitarist whose music spurs constant genre exploration throughout avant-garde jazz\, free form improvisation\, experimental rock\, and Arabic music. Here she joins pianist Róisín Adams (Hildegaard’s Ghost\, Beatings are in the Body) and drummer/inter-media artist Jen Yakamovich for broad-minded\, poetic interplay. \nMontréalers Stéphane Diamantakiou bass and Ivan Bamford drums meet Vancouver saxophonist John Paton in what would appear to be a standard jazz trio. A modern master and ardent sound explorer\, Vandermark has worked with Peter Brötzmann\, Kris Davis\, Terrie Ex\, Paal Nilssen-Love\, Ikue Mori\, Hamid Drake\, and scores of internationally renowned creative music giants. For this concert\, the prolific Chicagoan joins local duo Not for Proper in artful\, adventurous collaboration. \nPianist Lisa Cay Miller (NOW Orchestra) and drummer Kenton Loewen (Haram) have worked in a multitude of incarnations—both together and with local and international creative communities—dating back to when 1067 and The Sugar Refinery were keeping turn-of-the-century Granville Street weird and establishing Vancouver as a globally renowned improvised music hub. Cacophonous lifers\, Not for Proper juxtaposes polyrhythmic free din\, raw cracked tone\, and wild open peace. \nALVARO ROJAS’ MUSIC FOR 22 \nMusic for 22 began as a solo composition project for Alvaro Rojas in the early stages of the global pandemic. As the days wore on\, the restlessly inventive Rojas dug deeper\, arranging the pieces for string quartet alongside his adept guitar playing. With the guitar and string section sometimes working together\, sometimes in opposition\, Music for 22 ranges from contemplative beauty to turbulent rage alongside co-conspirators Meredith Bates violin\, Josh Zubot violin\, Parmela Attariwala viola\, and Peggy Lee cello. This evening celebrates the group’s new self-titled album release\, with cameos from American vocalist/producer Georgia Anne Muldrow and members of Vancouver’s vibrant music community.

Under Music Director Wynton Marsalis\, they animate a vast repertoire\, from historic compositions by Ellington\, Monk\, Mingus\, and Mary Lou Williams\, to Jazz at Lincoln Center-commissioned works from current and former JLCO members like Marsalis\, Ted Nash\, Victor Goines\, Sherman Irby\, Chris Crenshaw\, and Carlos Henriquez. Expect an all-Wynton program this evening as the JLCO pays tribute to a living legend. \nCalled “the modern day Duke Ellington\, Glenn Miller and Gerry Mulligan all in one” by All About Jazz\, trumpeter/composer/bandleader Wynton Marsalis is an iconic jazz master. DESCRIPTION:The Homeless Project\, led by guitarist and composer Tony Wilson\, is a multimedia presentation that incorporates original music\, film and narration\, hoping to shine a light on the serious housing struggles people face in the Downtown Eastside and across Canada. \nThe Homeless Project is the third in a series of multimedia presentations that deal with social issues. The first was A Day’s Life that dealt with drug addiction and and the second Looking Back which dealt with child abuse in the Catholic industrial Schools. Along with a ten-piece band there will be film\, photography\, narration and a sign language interpreter. Filming was all done in the Downtown Eastside by award-winning filmmaker Michael Mckinlay. \nWith Tony Wilson composer/guitar\, J.P. DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn-based Craig Taborn has been performing piano and electronic music in the jazz\, improvisational\, and creative music scene for over twenty five years. He has experience composing for and performing in a wide variety of situations including jazz\, new music\, electronic\, rock\, noise and avant garde contexts. The New York Times Magazine calls Taborn “One of the best jazz pianists alive.” \nCraig Taborn’s 2021 live album Avenging Angel was widely praised for the fresh ideas it brought to the solo piano idiom. The Guardian saluted Craig’s “genius (there is no other word for it)” and his “world of whispered\, wide-spaced figures\, ringing overtones\, evaporating echoes and glowering contrapuntal cascades.” Over the last decade Taborn has continued to refine and develop his approach\, reaching new high ground with Shadow Plays\, a stunning live recital from Vienna’s Konzerthaus. In this fully improvised concert\, recorded in March 2020\, Craig explores sounds and silences\, swirling colours\, densities and forms\, creating new music in the moment with both poetic imagination and an iron grip on his spontaneously generated material. \nPresented in collaboration with Heart of the City Festival.

The first show on November 16th includes two separate sets of music for drums and guitar featuring Dan Weiss and Miles Okazaki from NYC. Dan and Miles have been performing as a duo for over two decades. Based in Brooklyn\, both have extensive credits as composers and side projects. The Paris Review noted\, “Both are absolute masters on their instruments… they are both deeply dedicated to realizing each other’s artistic visions.” \nIn 2020\, they started the Cygnus Recordings label\, and released Music for Drums and Guitar\, a double album of original music. This concert will feature music from this suite as well as more recent work.

He’s a rim-batterer of choice for some of the greatest contemporary purveyors of “jazz” (Joe McPhee\, Mette Rasmussen\, Zoh Amba) and “rock” (Sir Richard Bishop\, Bill Orcutt\, Jim O’Rourke)\, as well as artists beyond categorization (Björk for her Volta album and world tour\, Michael Flower\, Okkyung Lee). Appearing on over 180 albums and touring in an ultra-wide array of collaborations\, he’s a renowned solo performer in his own right\, with a record due out later this year on the Drag City label. He’s built a highly inventive musical language through ecstatic free improvisation\, extended percussion techniques\, and the augmentation of his kit with circular-breathed reeds and bowed strings that coax new resonances out of the drums’ heads. Corsano’s been called “one of the world’s great drummers” by The Guardian\, an “ace of the avant-garde” by The New York Times\, a “powerhouse drummer” by Rolling Stone\, and “arguably the most riotously energetic and creative drummer in contemporary free jazz” by Wire Magazine.
