DESCRIPTION:Handmade Blade is Peggy Lee\, cello; Aram Bajakian\, guitar; and JP Carter\, trumpet. Each member of this trio contributes compositions that launch striking and explosive improvisations. This small group has a huge sonic palette and great energy. The trio has performed at numerous venues in Vancouver and in May 2016 made their US debut at Constellation in Chicago for the Chicago String Summit. The group has produced one recording: three interpretations of guitarist Aram Bajakian’s Dolphy Formations.

DESCRIPTION:Two-time Juno-nominated bassist\, composer\, bandleader\, and educator Jodi Proznick has earned a reputation as one of Canada’s finest jazz artists and collaborators. She has won numerous National Jazz Awards\, including Bassist of the Year twice. HAmong her many honours\, Jodi was awarded the Western Canadian Music Award for Jazz Artist of the Year for 2019.  Jodi Proznick’s New Horizons Project features three of Canada’s bright musical lights: Chris Davis on trumpet\, Tilden Webb on keys\, and Nick Bracewell on drums. They will be exploring jazz repertoire from albums such as Herbie Hancock’s Fat Albert Rotunda and Empyrean Isles\, Woody Shaw’s United\, Kenny Wheeler’s Gnu High and Miles Davis’  E.S.P as well as  new originals.

SUMMARY:James Meger's How To Do Nothing
DESCRIPTION:This music isn’t shy about exploring extreme emotional dynamics or diverse sonic influences\, moving gutsily between free improvisation\, electro-acoustic composition\, jazz\, metal\, noise\, and song. Led by bassist James Meger\, the newly formed ensemble skillfully pulls listeners through trashed maximalist howls of feedback and noise to emerge in clearings of delicate acoustic improvisation. It’s a voyage through the supersaturated dirt of janky electronics to the purity of handmade sound\, but even that isn’t always what it seems. At its core\, this project explores the wild scope of human experience while teasing our confusion between the fake and the real; the most soulful cries come from broken machines. DESCRIPTION:In the late ’70s guitarist Lenny Breau and pedal steel guitarist Buddy Emmons teamed up and recorded an album entitled Minors Aloud. Recorded in Nashville\, the album became a hard-to-find classic and a must-listen for guitarists of any kind. Tony Wilson\,guitar and Scott Smith\, pedal steel\, along with Jeremy Holmes bass and Liam MacDonald drums\, will play music from that gem of an album\, as well as other tunes by Lenny and Buddy.

DESCRIPTION:Described by CBC Music as one of 10 Vancouver acts to watch\, Only A Visitor is a quintet that blurs genre boundaries by straddling the line between art music and pop. Classically trained composer and arranger Robyn Jacob’s eclectic song writing showcases vocal techniques and arrangements that invoke Dirty Projectors and Bjork. With asymmetrical rhythms twisted around a pop skeleton\, Only A Visitor makes room for themselves between pop and experimental music. \nSince 2015\, the group (drummer Kevin Romain\, bassist Jeff Gammon\, and singers Emma Postl and Celina Kurz\, along with Jacob) has released one EP and two full length records. Together Only a Visitor has appeared at the Halifax\, Montreal\, Toronto\, and Vancouver Jazz Festivals\, as well as toured in Canada and internationally. In the works: one new full-length record and a theatrical concert collaboration with composer Nancy Tam\, which will be presented at Music on Main’s Modulus Festival in 2022.

DESCRIPTION:KEN VANDERMARK AND NOT FOR PROPER \nRenowned American composer\, improviser\, and MacArthur Fellowship recipient Ken Vandermark has a “room-filling\, spectrum-cramming\, mountain-moving tonal presence” (NOW Magazine) on sax and clarinets. A modern master and ardent sound explorer\, Vandermark has worked with Peter Brötzmann\, Kris Davis\, Terrie Ex\, Paal Nilssen-Love\, Ikue Mori\, Hamid Drake\, and scores of internationally renowned creative music giants. For this concert\, the prolific Chicagoan joins local duo Not for Proper in artful\, adventurous collaboration. \nPianist Lisa Cay Miller (NOW Orchestra) and drummer Kenton Loewen (Haram) have worked in a multitude of incarnations—both together and with local and international creative communities—dating back to when 1067 and The Sugar Refinery were keeping turn-of-the-century Granville Street weird and establishing Vancouver as a globally renowned improvised music hub. Cacophonous lifers\, Not for Proper juxtaposes polyrhythmic free din\, raw cracked tone\, and wild open peace. \nALVARO ROJAS’ MUSIC FOR 22 \nMusic for 22 began as a solo composition project for Alvaro Rojas in the early stages of the global pandemic. As the days wore on\, the restlessly inventive Rojas dug deeper\, arranging the pieces for string quartet alongside his adept guitar playing. With the guitar and string section sometimes working together\, sometimes in opposition\, Music for 22 ranges from contemplative beauty to turbulent rage alongside co-conspirators Meredith Bates violin\, Josh Zubot violin\, Parmela Attariwala viola\, and Peggy Lee cello. This evening celebrates the group’s new self-titled album release\, with cameos from American vocalist/producer Georgia Anne Muldrow and members of Vancouver’s vibrant music community.

DESCRIPTION:Jasper Stadhouders is the unrepentant guitarist/bassist of Amsterdam’s wildly improvisational and wonderfully confrontational Cactus Truck. He plays guitar\, bass and mandolin in bands such as PolyBand\, Blood Cloud\, Spinifex\, Made to Break\, Shelter\, Balconies\, Bazooka\, Bacchanalia\, Practical Music\, CP Unit\, Christian Marien Quartett & so many more. He’s described as an improviser\, composer\, band leader and concert organizer. Jasper is also a part of Amsterdam based musician’s collective Stichting Doek. He can be heard on over 30 releases on labels such as Trost\, Not Two\, TryTone and Audiographic. \nPresented thanks to the support of the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. \nPlease note that the venue is accessible by stairs only.

DESCRIPTION:Toronto-based improviser Karen Ng can be found in many different projects across a wide range of music. She has performed with The Weather Station\, Andy Shauf\, Lido Pimienta\, Luka Kuplowsky\, Badge Époque Ensemble\, Tim Baker\, L CON\, Happiness Project\, and Do Make Say Think. DESCRIPTION:Featuring 15 of the world’s finest players\, the remarkably versatile Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) has been performing\, educating\, and proudly flying the flag for jazz traditions across the globe and at their Lincoln Center home base – aka the House of Swing – since 1988. Under Music Director Wynton Marsalis\, they animate a vast repertoire\, from historic compositions by Ellington\, Monk\, Mingus\, and Mary Lou Williams\, to Jazz at Lincoln Center-commissioned works from current and former JLCO members like Marsalis\, Ted Nash\, Victor Goines\, Sherman Irby\, Chris Crenshaw\, and Carlos Henriquez. Expect an all-Wynton program this evening as the JLCO pays tribute to a living legend. \nCalled “the modern day Duke Ellington\, Glenn Miller and Gerry Mulligan all in one” by All About Jazz\, trumpeter/composer/bandleader Wynton Marsalis is an iconic jazz master. Born into the famed New Orleans musical family\, he was playing in the Fairview Baptist Church Band at 8 years old\, and the New Orleans Philharmonic by 12. He moved to New York in ‘79\, fresh out of high school\, and quickly traded his Julliard plans for a spot in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. At 19\, Wynton hit the road with his own band and has been touring the world ever since\, picking up nine GRAMMY Awards\, a Pulitzer Prize\, and a boatload of acclaim along the way. He eventually did find his way back to Julliard—as the prestigious school’s Founding Director of Jazz Studies. Wynton Marsalis sees jazz as a way of life\, a model of democratic action\, and “a prism through which American culture can be understood” (New York Times). SUMMARY:IronFest IV: Tony Wilson: The Homeless Project
DESCRIPTION:The Homeless Project\, led by guitarist and composer Tony Wilson\, is a multimedia presentation that incorporates original music\, film and narration\, hoping to shine a light on the serious housing struggles people face in the Downtown Eastside and across Canada. \nThe Homeless Project is the third in a series of multimedia presentations that deal with social issues. The first was A Day’s Life that dealt with drug addiction and and the second Looking Back which dealt with child abuse in the Catholic industrial Schools. Along with a ten-piece band there will be film\, photography\, narration and a sign language interpreter. Filming was all done in the Downtown Eastside by award-winning filmmaker Michael Mckinlay. \nWith Tony Wilson composer/guitar\, J.P. DESCRIPTION:Beatings Are In The Body is a powerful and enigmatic project from three of Canada’s leading figures in experimental music — Vancouver-based pianist/composer/improviser Róisin Adams (of Hildegard’s Ghost)\, Montréal-based experimental vocalist/composer Erika Angell (of Thus Owls)\, and fellow Vancouverite Peggy Lee — renowned cellist/composer/improviser. As their name indicates there’s a raw\, volatile dimension to the music they create\, “it’s an investigation of how memories\, pain\, and a spectrum of emotions are stored in and continue to be carried by our physical bodies.” Their unflinching\, self-titled debut full-length album resides in the dark fissures between adventurous acoustic songcraft\, poetry\, and the outright abstraction of free improv. \nPresented in collaboration with Heart of the City Festival.

SUMMARY:IronFest IV: Craig Taborn
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn-based Craig Taborn has been performing piano and electronic music in the jazz\, improvisational\, and creative music scene for over twenty five years. He has experience composing for and performing in a wide variety of situations including jazz\, new music\, electronic\, rock\, noise and avant garde contexts. The New York Times Magazine calls Taborn “One of the best jazz pianists alive.” \nCraig Taborn’s 2021 live album Avenging Angel was widely praised for the fresh ideas it brought to the solo piano idiom. The Guardian saluted Craig’s “genius (there is no other word for it)” and his “world of whispered\, wide-spaced figures\, ringing overtones\, evaporating echoes and glowering contrapuntal cascades.” Over the last decade Taborn has continued to refine and develop his approach\, reaching new high ground with Shadow Plays\, a stunning live recital from Vienna’s Konzerthaus. In this fully improvised concert\, recorded in March 2020\, Craig explores sounds and silences\, swirling colours\, densities and forms\, creating new music in the moment with both poetic imagination and an iron grip on his spontaneously generated material. \nPresented in collaboration with Heart of the City Festival.
