SUMMARY:LATE SHOW: Ava Mendoza + Emad Armoush
DESCRIPTION:Ava Mendoza (solo) \nMendoza is a guitarist\, songwriter and composer. Best known for her solo guitar/voice performances\, and as the leader of the experimental rock band Unnatural Ways\, she has received critical acclaim for her guitar work’s compelling combination of technique and visceral impact. Performing/recording credits include work with William Parker\, the Bill Orcutt Quartet\, Marc Ribot\, Hamid Drake\, Carla Bozulich\, Fred Frith\, Malcolm Mooney\, Mike Watt\, Nels Cline\, John Zorn\, Negativland\, the Violent Femmes\, and more. \n“The guitar has a turbulent\, crashing energy\, erupting in violence\, then settling back into a back slouching blues riff… thick and visceral enough to feel like a bodily presence\, but it’s animated by an eerie\, untethered spirit\, corpus and shadow joined at the foot. It’s classic blues touched with the chaos of rock and the exploratory courage of free-jazz.” – Aquarium Drunkard \n\nEmad Armoush (solo) \nArmoush‘s music has been described as “haunting but authoritative\, melancholic but inviting”. Syrian/Canadian multi-instrumentalist musician and singer Emad Armoush has been very active in the arabic\, flamenco\, world and the creative improv music scene of Vancouver since 2000. Inspired to bring his roots from arabic and flamenco traditions into his current musical life and influences\, Emad has released four albums since 2021. “Fragrance”\, and “Distilled Extractions” with the members of his group Rayhan\, some of Canada’s most innovative improvising musicians\, “Electritradition”\, an album of 5 duets\, and “Lunar” with his most recent project\, The Avant-garde Flamenco Trio. An album of all original music and lyrics reflecting on the human cost of war and conflict in the Middle East. SUMMARY:Lori Goldston + Malcolm Jack
DESCRIPTION:Lori Goldston (Experimental Short Films with Live Score) \n“Goldston is a hugely important character in contemporary music history.” – The Quietus \n“Cello music sounded from fathoms deep.” – NPR \nLori Goldston plays written and spontaneous work on cello\, and works as a composer\, teacher\, bandleader\, and prolific\, widely varied collaborator. Her voice as a cellist is singular\, deeply textured and original\, investigating thresholds\, instability\, and connections between far-flung modes of thought. \nShe lives in Seattle and performs in venues large and small throughout North America\, Europe and Australia as a soloist and collaborator with composers\, filmmakers\, writers\, theatre directors\, choreographers\, visual artists\, orchestras and bands including Earth\, Nirvana\, the BBC Scottish Symphony\, Black Belt Eagle Scout\, Helms Alee\, Mirah\, David Byrne\, Terry Riley\, Jessika Kenney\, Lonnie Holley\, Trimpin\, Stuart Dempster\, Shelley Hirsch\, Ilan Volkov\, Josephine Foster\, Michael Hurley\, Ghedalia Tezartes\, Senga Nengudi\, Ellen Fullman\, Lynn Shelton\, and many\, many others. \n\nMalcolm Jack \nTouching on the concepts of modern myth\, offline living\, ecology and alienation\, Vancouver-born “folk” singer Malcolm Jack has created a one of a kind world that is as inclusive as it is unique\, allowing peers to peer into their own lives and environments with stunning magnification. Currently accompanied by James Meger on upright bass and Cole Schmidt on electric guitar\, the trio find otherworldly plateaus for these most earthly creations.

SUMMARY:Ches Smith's Clone Row
DESCRIPTION:Ches Smith’s June 2025 release on Otherly Love Records\, Clone Row\, debuts an adventurous new quartet featuring guitarists Mary Halvorson and Liberty Ellman\, and bassist Nick Dunston. Smith finds endless possibilities in this seemingly limited instrumentation\, weaving together varied threads from his divergent earlier projects in ways that sound not quite like any of them. \nThe four renowned composer-improvisers tangle with Ches Smith’s newest compositions. Two highly individualistic guitarists swirl\, echo and double-take\, squaring off with a bass and drums team that anchors and unhinges through doubling sounds — drum machines and acoustic drums\, low-end analog synth and acoustic bass\, digital samples and repeated fragments performed in real time. In a dance of coherence and chaos\, the four musicians plunge headlong into the feedback loop of composition and improvisation armed with chemistry created by their mutual appreciation and enduring friendships. \n“This definitely ain’t your father’s guitar band\,” writes no less an expert on six-string subversion than Marc Ribot\, who penned the album’s liner notes. “It’s as if I’m hearing a Jim Hall concert in which one of us did a lot of mushrooms\, or… some post-punk post-Dave Brubeck post-trip-hop experiment with classical form.” \nFeaturing Ches Smith drums/vibes/electronics\, Mary Halvorson guitar\, Liberty Ellman guitar\, Nick Dunston bass/electronics.

SUMMARY:Bill Charlap
DESCRIPTION:Frankies Jazz Club presents SOLO\, a concert series featuring today’s premiere pianists in the intimate confines the beautiful Pyatt Hall at the VSO School of Music. \nGrammy Award winning pianist\, Bill Charlap has performed with many leading artists of our time\, ranging from Phil Woods and Tony Bennett to Gerry Mulligan and Wynton Marsalis. He is known for his interpretations of American popular songs and has recorded albums featuring the music of Hoagy Carmichael\, Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin. Time magazine wrote\, “Bill Charlap approaches a song the way a lover approaches his beloved…no matter how imaginative or surprising his take on a song is\, he invariably zeroes in on its essence.” \nThe Bill Charlap Trio was formed in 1997 with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington (no relation)\, and are now recognized as one of the leading groups in jazz. The trio received two Grammy Award nominations\, for Somewhere: The Songs of Leonard Bernstein and most recently The Bill Charlap Trio: Live at the Village Vanguard. In 2016\, Charlap won a Grammy award for Tony Bennett & Bill Charlap: The Silver Lining\, The Songs of Jerome Kern (Sony). In 2018\, Charlap co-produced and recorded the Grammy nominated album\, Tony Bennett & Diana Krall\, Love Is Here To Stay. \n2021 marks the 17th year of Bill’s artistic directorship of New York City’s Jazz in July Festival at the Kaufmann Concert Hall at 92Y. He has produced several concerts for Jazz at Lincoln Center\, an evening of George Gershwin’s music at the Hollywood Bowl\, and is the Director of Jazz Studies at William Paterson University in Wayne\, New Jersey. \nBorn in New York City\, Charlap began playing the piano at age three. His father was Broadway composer Moose Charlap\, whose credits include Peter Pan\, and his mother is singer Sandy Stewart\, who appeared on the Ed Sullivan and Perry Como shows and earned a Grammy nomination for her recording of “My Coloring Book.” In 2005\, Charlap and Stewart released the acclaimed CD\, Love Is Here To Stay (Blue Note). Charlap is married to renowned jazz pianist Renee Rosnes. The two artists often collaborate in a duo piano setting and have released an album of the Blue Note label\, Double Portrait. \n*please note this event takes place at Pyatt Hall at 843 Seymour Street and tickets are sold through PromoTix (see link)

SUMMARY:Eric Reed
DESCRIPTION:Frankies Jazz Club presents SOLO\, a concert series featuring today’s premiere pianists in the intimate confines the beautiful Pyatt Hall at the VSO School of Music. \nAs a piano-playing prodigy\, Philadelphia native Eric Reed performed gospel music in his father’s church at age 5. By 7\, he began formal study at Philadelphia’s Settlement Music School\, and four years later\, after his family moved to Los Angeles\, he studied at the Richard D. Colburn School of Performing Arts\, where he would eventually meet Wynton Marsalis during a workshop. By 18\, Reed began subbing in Marsalis’ band\, replacing Marcus Roberts in the trumpeter’s renowned septet the following year. Reed then worked briefly as a sideman with Freddie Hubbard and Joe Henderson before returning to Marsalis’ group\, subsequently appearing on 1992’s Citi Movement\, 1993’s In This House\, On This Morning\, 1996’s Jump Start And Jazz\, 1997’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Blood On The Fields and 1998’s Standard Time\, Vol. 5: The Midnight Blues. Reed also recorded first six albums as a leader during his tenure with Marsalis\, including 1993’s It’s All Right To Swing and 1994’s The Swing And I\, both titles reflecting the pianist’s urgent desire to fit in with the whole somewhat revisionist agenda of the Young Lions. \nThrough his formative years with Marsalis\, his emergence as a leader on the New York jazz scene and the 30 albums that he made under his own name\, Reed kept a secret that plagued him. Now\, with the release of Black\, Brown & Blue\, his heartfelt tribute to jazz masters who came before him\, the 52-year-old pianist has decided it was time to talk about it. Reed’s 31st as a leader and fourth for Smoke Sessions marks the first album that he has recorded while being completely open about his bisexuality\, resulting in what he calls his most autobiographical release to date. As he stated in label’s press release: “It’s time for me to just go ahead and be completely authentic in every aspect of my life. That includes being more open about my sexuality and proactively moving into spaces connected with the LGBTQ+ community. Those aspects of my life were becoming more bold and more broad\, and I could no longer keep them on the margins.” \nPyatt Hall is an acoustically and vibrationally isolated performance space contructed from locally sourced basalt stone and sound diffusing maple wood slats which contribute to the unparalleled acoustics that the space offers\, as well as adds an elegant and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere. \n*please note this event takes place at Pyatt Hall at 843 Seymour Street and tickets are sold through PromoTix (see link)

SUMMARY:IronFest V: Night Two - Kevin Romain's Salience Network + Brodie West Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Click here to purchase a ticket bundle to Ironfest. \nKevin Romain’s Salience Network \nSalience Network is a modern jazz ensemble led by drummer/composer Kevin Romain. Dramatic\, spontaneous creation and razor-sharp precision come together on stage with Romain’s longtime collaborators Nikko Whitworth bass\, John Nicholson tenor and soprano saxophones\, and Feven Kidane trumpet. Through dense polyrhythms and snaking melodies\, they explore Romain’s hyperfixations on the neuroscience of emotion\, circadian biology\, coffee extraction theory\, cool animals\, and anti-colonial resistance. The Salience Network’s debut album\, recorded to tape at Vancouver’s Afterlife Studios and released in November 2023 on the Infidels Jazz label\, is a somber document punctuated by moments of humour and hope. \nBrodie West Quintet \nToronto-based saxophonist/composer Brodie West is a tireless creative force—both within jazz spheres and well beyond them. He’s one of those rare artists whose practice encompasses tremendous breadth but whose singular\, eccentric voice is irrepressible. West’s quintet features two drummers – Nick Fraser and Evan Cartwright – along with pianist Tania Gill and Josh Cole on bass. The group plays West’s rhythmically charged compositions\, presenting an intricate rhythmic matrix at times meditative\, buoyant and wrapped with lyrical melodicism and virtuosic improvisation. \nThis is a 19+ event. \nPresented in collaboration with the Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival. \nFor 21 years\, the Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival has been grounded in the Downtown Eastside and focused on listening and learning from the community’s cultural practices. The Festival works with\, for and about the Downtown Eastside community to weave our community’s stories\, ancestral memory\, cultural traditions\, lived experiences\, and artistic practices to create a fabric of resistance and resilience.

SUMMARY:Benny Green
DESCRIPTION:Frankies Jazz Club presents SOLO\, a concert series featuring today’s premiere pianists in the intimate confines the beautiful Pyatt Hall at the VSO School of Music. \nAt the age of 19\, Benny Green moved to New York City to join legendary vocalist Betty Carters band and never looked back. He would then assume the piano chair with some of jazz music’s most important instrumental groups\, including Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers\, Freddie Hubbard\, and the Ray Brown Trio. With these artists he would receive an invaluable artistic education\, learn to embody the artform and master the music. \nIn 1988 he released his debut album as a leader Prelude on Criss Cross Records\, which featured Terrence Blanchard\, Javon Jackson\, Peter Washington\, and Tony Reedus. In 1990\, he signed with Blue Note Records\, for which he made seven recordings. These records featured some of the best musicians working in the idiom including Stlanley Turrentine\, Ron Carter\, Ray Drummond\, Christian McBride\, Victor Lewis\, Lewis Nash and Carl Allen. In 2000 he would begin recording with Telarc Records. These albums featured his collaboration with guitarist Russell Malone. \nSince 2013 he has released 5 albums on Sunnyside Records\, and plans are in the works for a solo piano recording\, which will be scheduled for release in the coming year. \nTaking inventory of the music industry and societal perception of jazz today\, Benny Green states that he is committed to the truth of what has been given by people who lived and died for this music\, playing honest jazz is precious to my human existence. I’ve never felt a need or a calling to become one who’s thought of or labeled as an innovator. Rather\, I’ve strived since childhood to become an authentic jazz musician\, and I seek to stand as a torchbearer for the continuum of straight-ahead jazz piano. \n*please note this event takes place at Pyatt Hall at 843 Seymour Street and tickets are sold through PromoTix (see link)

SUMMARY:Myriam Gendron + Jim White & Marisa Anderson
DESCRIPTION:Myriam Gendron\nPrior to her debut album\, Myriam Gendron’s primary musical focus was busking in Paris Metro stations\, performing the songs of Leonard Cohen and others\, accompanying herself on guitar. Her critically acclaimed albums\, Not So Deep As A Well (2014) and Ma délire – Songs of love\, lost & found (2021) have explored a vast geography of inspiration\, from the poems of American writer Dorothy Parker to the complex folk traditions of Quebec and beyond. \nThe Montreal-based artist’s third LP\, Mayday\, is an even more syncretic fusion of the elements she uses to create her sound. Most of the songs are original\, sung in both English and French\, and they blend traditional and avant elements with abandon. Myriam is often accompanied on this album by Marisa Anderson guitar and Jim White (Dirty Three) drums\, whose work provides a quietly aggressive sort of free-rock base. \n  \n\n  \nJim White & Marisa Anderson\nJim White and Marisa Anderson share an abounding appetite for musical exploration. White\, as a member of Venom P Stinger\, Dirty Three\, and Xylouris White\, is well-known for his creative and idiosyncratic drumming. His singular abilities have also led to collaborations with Cat Power\, PJ Harvey\, and Bill Callahan among others. Anderson’s prolific output as a solo performer\, her mastery of traditional folk and blues forms and her abilities to make them entirely her own has established her as one of the most exciting and forward-thinking guitarists of the last decade. White and Anderson’s considerable technical skills are used in the most inventive and unconventional manner on their debut duo recording\, The Quickening. \nCo-presented by Coastal Jazz and the Vancouver Folk Music Festival. \nThis show is 19+. DESCRIPTION:MONTHLY SERIES AT TYRANT STUDIOS (1019 Seymour St. *upstairs*) \nPresented in collaboration by Barking Sphinx Performing Society and Coastal Jazz \n9pm doors\n9:30pm music\n$15-20 \n(Tickets are not available for purchase until January 18th) \n1st set: CHRIS CORSANO & ELISA THORNE \n2nd set: CAT TOREN\, JAMES MEGER & LIAM MURPHY \nChris Corsano is a New York-based drummer who has been working at the intersections of free jazz\, avant-rock\, and experimental music since the late ’90s. He’s a rim-batterer of choice for some of the greatest contemporary purveyors of “jazz” (Joe McPhee\, Mette Rasmussen\, Zoh Amba) and “rock” (Sir Richard Bishop\, Bill Orcutt\, Jim O’Rourke)\, as well as artists beyond categorization (Björk for her Volta album and world tour\, Michael Flower\, Okkyung Lee). Appearing on over 180 albums and touring in an ultra-wide array of collaborations\, he’s a renowned solo performer in his own right\, with a record due out later this year on the Drag City label. He’s built a highly inventive musical language through ecstatic free improvisation\, extended percussion techniques\, and the augmentation of his kit with circular-breathed reeds and bowed strings that coax new resonances out of the drums’ heads. Corsano’s been called “one of the world’s great drummers” by The Guardian\, an “ace of the avant-garde” by The New York Times\, a “powerhouse drummer” by Rolling Stone\, and “arguably the most riotously energetic and creative drummer in contemporary free jazz” by Wire Magazine. Spin ranked him as one of the “100 Greatest Drummers of Alternative Music\,” and in 2017\, he received the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award. \nArts & design: Leisure Thief

SUMMARY:IronFest IV: Craig Taborn
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn-based Craig Taborn has been performing piano and electronic music in the jazz\, improvisational\, and creative music scene for over twenty five years. He has experience composing for and performing in a wide variety of situations including jazz\, new music\, electronic\, rock\, noise and avant garde contexts. The New York Times Magazine calls Taborn “One of the best jazz pianists alive.” \nCraig Taborn’s 2021 live album Avenging Angel was widely praised for the fresh ideas it brought to the solo piano idiom. The Guardian saluted Craig’s “genius (there is no other word for it)” and his “world of whispered\, wide-spaced figures\, ringing overtones\, evaporating echoes and glowering contrapuntal cascades.” Over the last decade Taborn has continued to refine and develop his approach\, reaching new high ground with Shadow Plays\, a stunning live recital from Vienna’s Konzerthaus. In this fully improvised concert\, recorded in March 2020\, Craig explores sounds and silences\, swirling colours\, densities and forms\, creating new music in the moment with both poetic imagination and an iron grip on his spontaneously generated material. \nPresented in collaboration with Heart of the City Festival.

SUMMARY:IronFest IV: Josh Cole's Kind Mind
DESCRIPTION:Josh Cole’s Kind Mind is an electro-acoustic chamber ensemble based in Toronto featuring three of Canada’s premiere improvising musicians – Karen Ng alto saxophone/clarinet/synth\, Michael Davidson vibraphone/marimba/pedals and Josh Cole double bass/pedals/synth/sampler. Rooted in an approach to improvisation that has been brewing in the Toronto creative music hub “The Tranzac” for decades\, the trio explores a fractured\, sparse\, and timbral approach reinforced by brief compositions and a long history of collective music making. “I like the trio’s unique musical vision\, its tender and determined sound and the way it is delivered: with quality and precision. To create your own voice in the crowded musical environment of today is a feat.” (freejazzblog) \nPresented in collaboration with Heart of the City Festival with support from Canada Council.
