SUMMARY:Blue Moon Marquee
DESCRIPTION:Join us in revisiting this stellar performance from the 2021 TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival! This stream will be available for one week only\, from Monday\, November 1 at 8PM to Monday\, November 8 at 8PM. You can watch the stream on both our YouTube channel and Facebook page. \nThe spirits of Delta blues\, ragtime\, Howlin’ Wolf\, and Django Reinhardt flow freely through this raw trio of A.W. Cardinal\, an Albertan guitarist/vocalist who cut his teeth in the jazz clubs and crowded bar rooms of Montreal and New York\, and rhythm section Jasmine Colette Ohlhauser on bass and percussion\, Morgan Onda on tenor sax and Darcy Phillips on piano. Together\, Blue Moon Marquee “plucks the danger from a Tom Waits melody\, dances it a little further over the line with dark magic\, teases the rhythms and raises a toast to back alley jazz.” (Canadian Music)

SUMMARY:James Meger's How To Do Nothing
DESCRIPTION:This music isn’t shy about exploring extreme emotional dynamics or diverse sonic influences\, moving gutsily between free improvisation\, electro-acoustic composition\, jazz\, metal\, noise\, and song. Led by bassist James Meger\, the newly formed ensemble skillfully pulls listeners through trashed maximalist howls of feedback and noise to emerge in clearings of delicate acoustic improvisation. It’s a voyage through the supersaturated dirt of janky electronics to the purity of handmade sound\, but even that isn’t always what it seems. At its core\, this project explores the wild scope of human experience while teasing our confusion between the fake and the real; the most soulful cries come from broken machines. With Andromeda Monk\, no-input mixer\, saxophone; Lisa Cay Miller\, piano; Sam King\, guitar; James Meger\, bass\, compositions; Jesus Caballero\, drums.

SUMMARY:Peggy Lee Band
DESCRIPTION:Join us in revisiting this stellar performance from the 2021 TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival! This stream will be available for one week only\, from Monday\, November 1 at 8PM to Monday\, November 8 at 8PM. You can watch the stream on both our YouTube channel and Facebook page. \nCellist/composer Peggy Lee is a giant in Vancouver’s creative music scene. Equally adept in way-out free improv\, the classical rigor of her work with the VSO\, and the arcing melodic texturing of her detailed\, emotionally deep compositions\, Lee exudes mastery in quietude and in fire. Premiering new music alongside selections from its rich back catalogue\, this all-star band inhabits a sound world where “melodies slide in and out of abstraction; skewed marches butt up against folk songs; chamber music niceties crumble under the assault of funk and psychedelia.” (Georgia Straight)

SUMMARY:WE GOT TIME
DESCRIPTION:When grand jurors were told they wouldn’t be able to watch\nall the body camera footage due to time constraints\, one juror shot back\, loudly\,\n“We! Got! Time!” \nIn “we got time.”\, composer\, sound artist\, and jazz saxophonist Matana Roberts has created a collage of sound that reflects on the world we live in\, positioning the loss of Breonna Taylor at the center of that world\, as we ask questions about the meaning of words familiar to us through historic documents – the United States’ Declaration of Independence\, the Preamble and First Amendment to the US Constitution – the 19th-century hymn Pass Over to The Rest\, event data related to Ms. Taylor’s death\, and a roll call of the names of Black women lost to violence. Matana writes of this sound quilt as a communal practice: “a scrap alone is of no use\, but a scrap bounded together by others of its diverse kind will move beyond anything that it ever thought it could be.” \nThis iteration of “we got time.” was recorded live by The Crossing Choir in June of 2021 at the Woodlands in Philadelphia. The free stream is available until Wednesday\, October 20—you can view it on Facebook or on YouTube.

DESCRIPTION:Members of the art music collective 8EAST\, Lisa Cay Miller\, JP Carter\, and Kenton Loewen have worked in a multitude of incarnations—both together and with local and international creative communities—dating back to when 1067 and The Sugar Refinery were keeping turn-of-the-century Granville Street weird and establishing Vancouver as an internationally renowned improvised music hub. SUMMARY:LIVE FROM PARIS
DESCRIPTION:ROBERTO NEGRO (SOLO)\nPianist and composer Roberto Negro was born in Torino and grew up in Kinshasa\, before studying in Chambéry then Paris.\nA linchpin member of the Orleans-based group\, Tricollectif\, founded in 2011\, Roberto feeds on intersections and meetings:  theatre (Cie Les Veilleurs)\, vocals (Élise Caron\, Xavier Machault) and an appetence for duos (Théo Ceccaldi\, Émile Parisien). \n\nDUO LES MÉTANUITS\nAn outstanding work of re-composition by the visionary and mischievous Paris-based Italian pianist Roberto Negro\, Les Métanuits is a playful duo adaptation of György Ligeti’s first string quartet\, Les Métamorphoses Nocturnes. Roberto shares this impish adventure—and a passion for Ligeti’s music—with world-class saxophonist Émile Parisien.  \n\nPAPIER CISEAU\nKnown for his artfully adventurous trio dadada—whose 2018 debut took home Album of the Year at France’s prestigious Victoires du Jazz—pianist and composer Roberto Negro’s new project expands on that work\, both conceptually and in membership. Negro adds bassist Valentin Ceccaldi (Sylvain Darrifourcq\, Manuel Hermia) to longtime collaborators Emile Parisien saxophone and Michele Rabbia drums/electronics for poetic yet playful sound-shaping. \nFull of implicit narratives\, dreamlike nocturnes\, and a penchant for surprising scene shifts\, the paths Papier Ciseau takes are lyrical\, intense\, and always unexpected. \nSpecial thanks to Consulat général de France à Vancouver\, Istituto Italiano di Cultura Toronto\, Consulate General of Italy Vancouver. \n
