SUMMARY:Cat Toren’s HUMAN KIND - Early Show
DESCRIPTION:JUNO Award-winning pianist/composer Cat Toren’s “beautiful and adventurous” (CBC) HUMAN KIND channels Alice Coltrane and the free-form\, socially conscious jazz of the late ’60s\, making a powerful and urgent case for jazz’s expressive ability to uplift\, engage\, and unite. With local heavy-hitters Dave Say saxophone\, Elisa Thorn harp\, Aram Bajakian oud\, Tommy Babin bass\, and Dan Gaucher drums\, the empathic Vancouver-born\, Brooklyn-based Toren uses atmospheric abstraction and harmonic layering to mix deep human warmth with creative fire!

SUMMARY:Les Filles de Illighadad
DESCRIPTION:[CANCELLED] \n“Heavy\, meditative\, and tender” (New Yorker)\, Les Filles de Illighadad bring a sublime sound from central Niger. Guitarist/vocalist Fatou Seidi Ghali leads this ensemble through a hybrid of two distinct sides of Tuareg music: the hypnotic\, polyphonic rhythms of tende—performed exclusively by women—and the newer\, dreamily melodic guitar-based ‘desert blues’ that—until Ghali—had been made only by men. With trance-inducing singing\, chanting\, clapping\, and the centring low rhythm of the askalabo—a partially submerged calabash—the ground-breaking group’s communal spirit is at turns celebratory\, mournful\, and healing.

SUMMARY:John Boutté Quartet
DESCRIPTION:John Boutte’s shows are all about energy and soul. His gorgeous voice and deep groove make standards like Fly Me To the Moon fresh again. He can evoke Sam Cooke\, but his spirit is all New Orleans. His ace band (Caleb Tokarska guitar\, Chris Gestrin piano\, Nobumasa Osaki bass) knows when to add subtle shadings and when to swing! \n“Mr. Boutté can often evoke the sound of Sam Cooke. But his stage manner\, his choice of repertory and his rapport with musicians all point back to New Orleans. It’s hard to imagine him settled in any place else.” – The New York Times \n

SUMMARY:Amirtha Kidambi / Julia Úlehla / Darius Jones
DESCRIPTION:A key figure in New York’s experimental scene\, vocalist Amirtha Kidambi (Elder Ones\, Mary Halvorson) rethinks the building blocks of music through bold improv with a host of innovators. Simply put\, “the syllables she sings are express lanes to intensity” (New York Times)\, while American alto saxophonist Darius Jones “is too good and too different to plug into any kind of pigeonhole” (JazzTimes)\, and Vancouver-based vocalist/composer\, Dálava co-leader\, and former New Yorker Julia Úlehla is a “captivating Moravian magician” (Downbeat)\, whose approach is informed by opera training\, ethnomusicology\, ritual\, and a carefully nurtured sense of wonder. \nThanks to Western Front

SUMMARY:Jeff Parker (solo)
DESCRIPTION:Called “the most humble guitar god” by Chicago Music\, Jeff Parker is one of contemporary music’s most versatile\, innovative\, and prolific players. An integral part of “The Modern Chicago Sound”\, the quiet iconoclast is a member of influential indie band Tortoise\, a founding member of Chicago Underground\, and a broad-ranging collaborator with the likes of Andrew Bird\, Meshell Ndegeocello\, Makaya McCraven\, Clipping\, and Yo La Tengo. \nEqually at ease in post-rock angularity\, textural looping\, and painterly melodicism\, Jeff Parker is “one of the most formidable solo talents in modern jazz” (The Observer).

SUMMARY:Liturgy with BIG|BRAVE + Farida Amadou (solo)
DESCRIPTION:Liturgy \nSonically and conceptually dense\, Liturgy’s ferocious and transcendental black metal exists in a liminal space between experimental music and sacred ritual; a place where the power and dynamism of symphonic forms\, urgent sheets of distorted guitar\, pummeling burst beats\, and passionate\, throat-strafing vocals manifest the ecstatic with breathtaking grandeur. \nFounded in Brooklyn by vocalist/guitarist Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix\, the group’s meticulous rhythmic complexity and unyielding\, trance-inducing use of repetition is pushed to maximalist proportions on the new album 93696. With guitarist Mario Miron\, bassist Tia Vincent-Clark\, and drummer Leo Didkovsky\, Hunt-Hendrix reflects the awe of the unknowable and celebrates what revelations and mysteries lie ahead. \n \nBIG|BRAVE \nHarnessing an earthen heaviness of distorted textural drones\, austere bombast\, and guitarist Robin Wattie’s heart-rending voice\, BIG|BRAVE is at the forefront of reconfiguring the landscape of heavy music. With guitarist Mathieu Ball and drummer Tasy Hudson\, the elemental Montréal ensemble brandishes density and sparseness like weapons in their emotional elegies for the disenfranchised. \n\nFarida Amadou (solo) \nBelgian bassist Farida Amadou uses electronics and extended technique to conjure abstracted sounds that move from miniscule to overwhelming. \nVenue 19+ (No Minors)

SUMMARY:Sun Ra Arkestra
DESCRIPTION:An enormous influence on generations of avant-jazz players—as well as artists ranging from Sonic Youth to Solange—the visionary Afrofuturism pioneer Sun Ra released over a hundred albums between the mid-1950s and his departure for Saturn in 1993. But the Sun Ra Arkestra continues to beam Ra’s cosmic messages around our humble planet\, sometimes collecting mementos like a 2022 GRAMMY nomination for their album Swirling\, which was called “challenging but intoxicating” by The Guardian\, and “a total joy” by The Wire. \nKnown for melding Ellingtonian big band swing\, transcendent free jazz\, dancing\, chanting\, and lavishly-outfitted Afro-pageantry\, the 13-piece Arkestra will touch down to make sure Ra’s “Afrofuturist ideas and concepts are still hurtling through space at light speed” (Rolling Stone). \n— \nThe Sun Ra Arkestra features Noel Scott alto and tenor saxes\, Vincent Chancey French horn\, Elson Nascimento percussion/surdo\, Tyler Mitchell bass\, Wayne Smith drums\, Cecil Brooks trumpet\, James Stewart tenor sax\, Tara Middleton vocals\, D. Hotep guitar\, Dave Davies trombone\, Farid Barron piano\, Beavin Lawrence baritone sax\, Kevin Batchelor trumpet.
