DESCRIPTION:Tyrant Studios hosts ten exhilarating nights of artist performances followed by the Festival’s signature latenight\, open jazz jams. The historic venue\, located above Vancouver’s legendary Penthouse Nightclub\, has been a frequent haunt for the greats of performing arts history\, including Frank Sinatra\, Sammy Davis Jr\, Duke Ellington\, Billie Holiday and Oscar Peterson. Come early for 9:30pm sets\, then stay into the night as the headliners become hosts\, sharing the stage with visiting artists and local players alike starting at 11:00pm (jam signup at 10:45pm). All Tyrant Studio shows are $18 in advance\, $20 at the door. SUMMARY:Van Django Trio
DESCRIPTION:Van Django is a Vancouver based string swing jazz quartet whose music is well-rooted in the gypsy jazz of 1930’s Paris France. Since the group’s formation in 1998\, they have toured extensively in Canada as well as international forays to the US\, Europe and China. The group has had repeat performances at Djangofest Northwest (DFNW) in 2008-2016 sharing the stage with gypsy jazz luminaries such as the John Jorgenson Quintet\, the legendary gypsy jazz guitarist Romane and many others. \nThe group have released 4 CD’s: “Tiptoe Trip”\, “Waltz in the Shape of a Tree”\, “Hotel Europe” and a Christmas CD with special guests titled\, “Cool Yule”. They have been well received and played on many radio stations including; CBC\, RDI\, Espace Musique\, NPR and Lyric FM in Ireland CD.

DESCRIPTION:John has been playing with the greats of the Jazz and entertainment world since 1961. This extensive list includes Harry James\, Stan Kenton\, Johnny Mathis\, Lionel Hampton\, Shelly Manne\, Toshiko Akioshi\, Stevie Wonder\, Hugh Fraser\, and many others. He has been featured at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival many times and has been a welcome addition to the Vancouver Jazz scene since 2016. He is a unique and masterful musician who loves to play songs that are beautiful and interesting. \nBill Coon was the recipient of the 2009 National Jazz Awards\, Guitarist of the Year. He leads several of his own groups including the BC Double Quartet whose recording\, Departure with Brad Turner on trumpet and violinist Cameron Wilson was nominated for a 2019 Western Canadian Music Award. DESCRIPTION:Richard Bona is a Grammy-winning musician\, one of the most accomplished international bass players\, composers and multi-instrumentalists. With his unique sound and vocal gift he is continuously representing his African origins. Bona’s music addresses the continent’s traditions\, culture\, beauty and issues. His purpose\, and the way he connects with his audience has turned him into a staple name in world\, jazz and Afropop music. \nBona’s new group\, Asante Trio\, is testament to his philosophy of cultural collaboration. Joining Bona is pianist Jesus Pupo\, who pays tribute to the “piano Cubano” style and its vibrant Afro-Cuban rhythmic and melodic heritage. Percussionist Harvel Nakundi provides the groove and layered rhythmic complexity inherent to the many styles that influence the group’s sound. In their collective fusion of jazz\, Afro-Cuban\, and African styles\, Asante Trio embodies the transatlantic musical affinities that trace their roots back to the African continent. \nRichard Bona has toured\, composed\, recorded\, and created musical forms of art with the greatest: Herbie Hancock\, Harry Belafonte\, Steps Ahead\, Quincy Jones\, Chick Corea\, Buena Vista Social Club\, Cesária Évora\, Sting\, Mike Stern\, Pat Metheny\, Stevie Wonder\, Bobby McFerrin\, Chucho Valdés\, George Benson\, Oumou Sangaré and many more. Along the diverse notable collaborations Richard has also taught Jazz Improvisation at NYU and is constantly teaching and mentoring young talents throughout the world. He’s also a TED speaker and ambassador for various non-profit projects. He is currently producing and recording for Latin and Brazilian artists in the realm of pop\, Brazilian songbook\, Flamenco and Caribbean music.
