DESCRIPTION:Tyrant Studios hosts ten exhilarating nights of artist performances followed by the Festival’s signature latenight\, open jazz jams. DESCRIPTION:Benjamin Sigerson is a Vancouver-based composer/pianist\, who received his degree in composition from McGill University in 2023 having studied with Brian Cherney and Christine Jensen. Sigerson has won several awards for both composition and performance\, and recently released a five-keyboard record “The Forest for the Trees” with Cellar Live. As a pianist\, Sigerson has played with Canadian legends like Cory Weeds\, Kevin Dean\, Campbell Ryga\, and Jim Doxas\, and has been included on several albums and concerts across the country. Joining him is veteran Vancouver drummer Craig Scott and Victoria bassist John Mossie.

DESCRIPTION:Inspired by exploratory artists like Bill Frisell and Mary Halvorson\, guitarist Madeleine Elkins’s intricate compositions start at the crossroads of jazz\, folk\, and rock\, then move freely from there. With bassist William Chernoff and drummer Kevin Romain\, Elkins merges contemporary jazz with her love of modern bluegrass and post-punk guitar sounds. A member of Sister Jazz Orchestra and Spindle!\, she’s performed with Mali Obomsawin\, Wayne Horvitz\, and Kaïa Kater. Her debut\, Brighton Train\, comes out this year on the Infidels Jazz label.

Leon’s debut album Push & Pull is a journey through jazz\, funk\, and pop rhythms. DESCRIPTION:Canadian saxophonist and composer Christine Jensen has lent a distinct voice to the creative jazz scene of the past twenty-five years. Her jazz orchestra recordings Treelines and Habitat were JUNO Award-winners for Jazz Album of the Year (group) in 2011 and 2014\, respectively\, while her third jazz orchestra album Harbour (Justin-Time Records) is nominated in this year’s signature celebration of Canadian talent. \nQuite a regular at the JUNOs\, her dynamic and expressive Quartet album Day Moon won for Jazz Album of the Year (solo) in 2024. Inspired by seeing a full moon as the sun was rising during the global pandemic\, it’s an apt image for a suite of music that taps into deep reservoirs of emotion while keeping “enough uplift and whimsy in the playing to remedy any unsought melancholy. The welcome catharsis in Jensen’s vision expands both ways” (Downbeat). \nJensen is constantly in motion as an improviser\, composer and bandleader. DESCRIPTION:Under the direction of saxophonist/clarinetist James Danderfer\, the Vancouver Jazz Orchestra (VJO) features an array of the city’s finest jazz artists. The VJO is dedicated to the presentation of classic big band music as well as a focus on Vancouver composers\, past and present. Recent performances have featured international artists such as Jeremy Pelt and Seamus Blake and 2025 promises to be the VJO’s biggest year yet\, starting off with this unique presentation. \nThis evening will highlight a seminal figure in the legacy of large ensemble jazz in Vancouver\, in Canada\, and beyond: Dave Robbins. As a trombonist\, bandleader\, arranger\, composer\, and teacher\, Robbins made invaluable contributions to the fine art of big band and jazz orchestra performance. Shockingly\, no recordings of large ensembles led by Robbins have been available for years; instead\, studio and live recordings were passed privately between enthusiasts. DESCRIPTION:In the spring of 2004 we see the beginning of Brejera when Mario Silva (Sao Paulo\, Brazil) and Trevor Murray (Nova Scotia\, Canada) started to experiment with samba and choro music together. From this point on the band was serving up styles of traditional samba\, baião\, frevo and choro. Venturing into a mix of Mario Silva on 7 string guitar/vocals\, Trevor Murray on cavaquinho/vocals\, Bruno Matos on pandeiro/vocals\, Steve Bagnell on sax and Aiko Sato on trombone. Brejera will deliver authentic and spontaneous fine Brazilian music to the audience.

DESCRIPTION:Open Thread—the innovative Melbourne-based ensemble of cellist Peggy Lee\, saxophonist Julien Wilson\, guitarist Theo Carbo\, and drummer/percussionist Dylan van der Schyff—weaves anthemic melodies\, diverse rhythmic structures\, and ear-awakening improvised soundscapes into an idiosyncratic collective identity. \nThe group was sparked by Peggy Lee’s move from Vancouver to Melbourne in 2023 and her desire to connect with local musicians (in addition to longtime collaborator van der Schyff). This led to a gathering of attuned talents\, and a leap into the rich\, joyful possibilities of a collective sound that’s as challenging as it is rewarding. \nWith compositions from each member alongside open-eared\, emotionally far-ranging improvisations\, the group calls equally on deep vocabularies of extended techniques and their shared\, playfully experimental love of melody and song forms. “The quartet dabbles in discordant soundscapes.
